robiwon Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Introduced at this years Detroit Auto Show was this concept from Buick. The Avista Coupe. Built on the same chassis that's under the new Camaro and Cadillac ATS this concept packs rear wheel drive along with a 400hp twin turbo V6. I really hope this car goes into production because I would love to have a kit of this on my shelf!
Lunajammer Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Looks pretty cool, but also looks heavily influenced by Jaguar and Aston Martin from a few years ago. I'll take it as a GM product.
louie Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Wow that's nice. Yeah I would love to have a kit of that car. Thank you. Jeff
Joe Handley Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I'm really loving that, the new Continental, and the new Chrysler Minivans.
MrObsessive Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Ooooh that's such a gorgeous car! And a pleasant surprise coming from Buick! I'd love to see it come to the market as is, but you can betcha we won't see a pillarless hardtop. The Safety Nazis here in the U.S. will see to that. Just the same, Buick would be crazy NOT to bring this car to market! What's the average age of the current Buick buyer?? I thought I read somewhere that it's something like 59-60 years old. What a neat car to bring in some younger buyers! That would work, how much ? Seeing that it's a Buick, I would expect this car to start somewhere in the upper 30's low 40K range. I'd also think that we wouldn't see this car until the 2018-'19 time frame. It's now 2016, so they're working on the '19-'20 stuff now as we speak.
Monty Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Even though it's just a concept car, it's nice to see that there are still designers in the automotive world who are capable of coming up with attractive styling ideas, as opposed to the vast number of mind-numbing crossovers and blatantly garish sedans currently available. Yes, this car has a few Aston Martin-ish styling cues, but I'll give Buick a pass just for not cranking out another me-too-mobile. Unfortunately, like the styling exercises that preceded the current Checker Marathon errrr, Dodge Charger, if this car actually makes it into production, I’m sure Buick will find a way to water down the concept. I’m betting we’ll end up getting something twice as bland and half as powerful.
Joe Handley Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Should be the new Riviera. My thoughts here too, it really should have the Riv name attached to it!
Maindrian Pace Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Mid-40s at the bare minimum based on other cars with that chassis and powerful engines - plus the Buick premium. It would probably be China-only if they produced it.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) First Buick I've seen since this that doesn't look like some old geezer's Geritol Express...or a boring mommy van. With the right subtle mods, I always thought the '94-'99 Riviera could pass for a 2-dr Jag sedan. Edited January 13, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
CometMan Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I live just outside of Detroit, the Auto Show is always one of the biggest events of the year, they did a pretty thorough walk around of the Avista on the local news. She really is beautiful!
jeffs396 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 THIS would OUTSELL the Camaro (based on LOOKS, but too many are hooked on the Camaro name) if the production version was unchanged
Chuck Most Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Black it out, add a turbo and a 6-speed manual... maybe AWD just for added kink factor... and you'd have a modern-day GN.
Harry P. Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 That's a good looking car, "Buick" or otherwise.
Joe Handley Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 It already has 2 turbos, but the manual trans would take away from the GN-ness of it.
Harry P. Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 BTW... am I the only one who wonders why GM killed off Pontiac but kept Buick? Shouldn't it have been the other way around?
Greg Wann Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Not bad. It needs hood scoops. Can you say AVISTA GSX? A 6 speed manual and all wheel drive would make it a winner I'm sure.
Chuck Most Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 It already has 2 turbos, but the manual trans would take away from the GN-ness of it.But one less turbo would add some of it back. I think. Maybe.
Bernard Kron Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 BTW... am I the only one who wonders why GM killed off Pontiac but kept Buick? Shouldn't it have been the other way around? China. The Buick nameplate is very big in China. They've been making the Buick Regal in China since 1999. The Regal is a prestige mid-market model, like Audi or Volvo, in the Chinese market and a big seller. In fact Buick is leading GM into a shift to Chinese production for models important to their Eastern hemisphere (Asia/Australia) strategy. GM is closing it's last Australian Holden plant next year and shifting Holden production to China. The 2016 Buick Envision Minivan is the first GM product to be exported from China to the North American market. It was designed as much for the Asian market as it was for North America. Expect many key models to be sourced from Chinese plants - assuming the whole thing over there holds together over the next few years, of course. GM had been looking at killing off both brands but China saved the Buick badge. GM will ,be watching the Asian response to the Avista to make a production decision.
Aaronw Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 It is not a bad looking car at all, but as soon as I saw it the nickname Angry Guppy popped into my head... I don't know why exactly but I don't think that would help sales.
BubbaBrown Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Harry, I always wondered why they didn't keep Olds, I think that was the oldest.
