Tom Geiger Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Pennsylvania has archaic alcohol laws. Liquor and wine is sold in "state stores". That's stores with actual state employees manning them. It's like going to DMV. Beer is old by "beer distributors" who can only sell full cases. Recently 'relaxed' to allow them to sell 12 packs. Still, if you want a 6 pack, there are a few restaurants locally that sell beer to take out in six packs. But they charge what they want.Recently they decided to allow beer and wine sales in grocery stores. It is a separate section with it's own register. And you must present ID to purchase. The cashier has to run your license through a scanner so there is record of every purchase. Backward stupid state
Harry P. Posted January 29, 2016 Author Posted January 29, 2016 How do the Amish put up with crazy laws like that?
Aaronw Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Ok, so I was at the local "Tar-zhay" right down the street this afternoon... picked up a few odds 'n' ends, one of which happened to be a bottle of Chardonnay. And guess what happened at the checkout? The cashier actually "carded" me! I guess I was, uh... flattered? But seriously... I turned 21 several decades ago and in no way could I pass for under 21. The gray hairs alone would give me away! I know she did it because she's "supposed" to... but really, isn't that a bit silly? I got asked for the year of birth when buying beer recently. I was a little surprised by the question so it took me a few seconds to spit out the year. The girl at the register just kind of laughed and said sometime she forgets how old she is too, "am I 25 or 26"?. I didn't mind being carded, not a big deal, however the realization that I have been able to drink for her entire life didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. Mentally I still think of myself as about 30 until reality is rudely shoved in my face and it is pointed out that the number of 30th birthdays I've had is into double digits.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Last time I was carded I thought it was pretty ridiculous too. I looked at the girl, smiled and said "you've got to be kidding. I'm old enough to be your grandfather." She laughed and said she thought it was silly to have to ask, but she just started working there, and her boss said she gad to card EVERYONE or else. She was pretty, nice, had a great voice and smile. How could I possibly refuse? Ah, to be 40 years younger...and know what I know now.
1930fordpickup Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Some of the stores put in a year of berth around here also. The older cashiers just put it in and do not ask.

Slightly off topic, but while the older ones do that here too, mostly, I always have to ASK for my "senior" discount. Oh, the shame of getting old.
Joe Handley Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Slightly off topic, but while the older ones do that here too, mostly, I always have to ASK for my "senior" discount. Oh, the shame of getting old. There might be a good reason you have to ask for your senior discount, Bill. We had gone to Silver Dollar City a number of times until Mom's medical issues got to be too bad and on one visit, Dad had an interesting conversation with a cashier that was nearly as old as he is on the matter. Apparently he had a funny way of asking Dad about wanting his discount and he ended up telling Dad that one time when he came right out and asked a woman who was obviously old enough to get one, she got highly offended and actually raised a stink over it! Sounds like they had to be creative in asking after that.
SfanGoch Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I asked about a vet's discount at the same drug store where I was carded for cigarettes and was told, by the same cashier, that the animal clinic was three blocks away.

Joe Handley Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Lol, I'm kinda curious if the cashier understood which kind of Vet you meant, I can see that working both ways.
SfanGoch Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 You have to understand that I live in Disney's newest theme park attraction - Stupidland, aka Brooklyn. The person working at the prescription pick-up counter isn't any better. She looked at my name on the envelope and told me my name is "Ra-low (pronounced like "ow!") ski". I corrected her and said it's pronounced "Zrud-luff-ski". She countered with, "No, that's wrong. The "Z" and "D" are silent." What do you mean "it's wrong"? I think I know how to pronounce my own name! Why the hell would they be silent?!? They wouldn't be part of my name if they were silent. "Yeah, maybe that's how you say it in Holland or wherever you come from; but, you live in America now. So, get used to it." Now, what was that about insulting a cashier's intelligence? I need to start carrying a baseball bat when I go shopping.
The70judgeman Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I just don't care anymore. If I'm buying spray paint(except @ the LHS), beer, at the bank, an "R" rated movie(Oooo!), or whatever may require an ID to buy, I'm usually paying with a card. So, open wallet already...ID flipped open, ID checked, I pay, and out the door I go. No big deal. Sometimes the cashier just kind of jokes about the ID thing..."You're 18(or 21) right?" Me: "No, I put each of the gray hairs in myself on purpose."
High octane Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Many years ago when I was a bartender I had asked a guy to see his ID's and he said that he didn't have to show them to me. I simply replied that I didn't have to serve him either.

charlie8575 Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Went out to dinner w/ my sister tonight, she ordered a pinot grigio, and the waitress thought it was a beer and then mentioned the types of beer they had. And we both got carded...Sad and funny at the same time.On both counts.Charlie Larkin
martinfan5 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Speaking of which... the local Hobby Lobby has a paint aisle where the spray paints are behind a locked glass display case and you have to have an employee open the case so you can buy the paint. But in the model aisle, the spray paints are right there out in the open. We have that law here too , but most of the LHS dont have the spray paints locked up, although couple do have the Tamiya spray paints locked up.
martinfan5 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) States love to do stings( AZ does) to see if they are in fact carding , and I know in AZ, if you fail to card someone that is under age, it was a $1k fine, they charged you with a misdemeanor and you lose your job , I dont recall what happens when you fail the stings, but it was just almost as bad, its been awhile since I last had to worry about carding people. And as its already been mentioned, each company has their own policy's on carding, and those ages to card are higher than 25, I know some go has high as 45 if I am recalling correctly, so yes, while it may be silly to card someone that is clearly north of being in their 20's, they are just doing their job, you know, that thing that pays their bills. martinfan5 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I once asked a checker why scan my ID? The reply was so that the register can determine if you are of age or not. I suppose math is passé?Its not because of math, its because of fake ID's, while its can be, or used to be easy to make a fake ID, most of them dont have the ability to do the bar codes or the magnetic strip, they would use real ID cars, but with fake info ( there are/were so many ways to do fake ID's,) on the face, but the bar code or magnetic strip would still contain the legal age , so that is one reason why the went to scanning or sliding it. Again, this is all based on the time that I had to worry about carding people( 2008-2010) And yes, is also another way for you to CYA and is proof that you did in fact card .
Harry Joy Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 We have that law here too , but most of the LHS dont have the spray paints locked up, although couple do have the Tamiya spray paints locked up. The spray can laws started, I'm pretty sure, in Chicago in the 90s. They were enacted as an anti-graffiti/gang measure.

High-handed repression of freedom of artistic expression, if you ask me. I LOVE to see everything covered in colorful scrawls. I think throwing trash everywhere makes a place look more like it's occupied by normal humans too, and not artificially manicured by uptight whitebread types. Oldmodelmaker Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 When the cashier actually took my ID and scanned it at Target, I decided to never buy alcohol there again. As a result, I don't go there much at all anymore.
Danno Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 "When the cashier actually took my ID and scanned it at Target, I decided to never buy alcohol there again. Their database and the marketing firms they sell it to already have your info and they've already blended it with the stuff your liquor store and grocery stores and other department stores and gas stations and utilities and banks have sold them.
