For several years we had a joint a block off the town square called The Square Bagel. It was pretty close to an eat-in Noo Yawk deli. Really good food. Not great, but pretty damm good. Now gone. I have no idea why. We have a diner that's also pretty damm good, owned /run by real Greeks. No Greek food on the actual menu, but if you ask, you shall receive. We also had a very good kinda upscale Greek restaurant on the square. Now also gone, but they still cater from another location and have a tent at the weekend farmer's market.

The interesting places that are definitely a cut above don't survive here. White-bread mediocrity lasts and lasts.

How about a hot soft pretzel covered with salt and spicy brown mustard?

Oh yeah...that's done here too! B)

Especially at the ballparks.

For me, I'll use tableware for a really deep-dish Chicago-style pizza (sorry, Harry).

Oh, you're right on that count, Skip. The only pizza you eat with a knife and fork here and not get laughed out of the place is Chicago-style deep dish pizza. There's no other way to eat it! And of course we'll have an ice-cold pitcher of beer with that...

Back when I was traveling the US solo, I liked Wendy's and Carl's Jr. for their burgers and Jack in the Box for their sourdough breakfast, but that was back in '05 so who knows what's good now...

But if any one of you guys ever make it to Belgium, our national fast food is Fries (a Belgian invention FYI) with mayonnaise and Stoofvlees (meat that has been cooked so much that is falls apart, in a sauce)

I spent a summer in Brussels many years ago, and often got frites from doorway stands, with a splash of vinegar and sometimes tartar sauce. Can't duplicate it.

Lou Malnati's pizza is not good, but excellent as I have one 'bout 5 miles from the house, and picked one up just last Saturday.

I think I've eaten at one of their locations in Chicago back in the late 90s..

The key to great Belgian fries is:

- French the potatoes

- Submerge the fries in cold water

- Dry them with a salad dryer or so

- Fry them in Ossewit  (is beef fat) at 140°c

- Let them cool off

- once cooled fry them at 180°c 'till they "sing" and float on the fat.

take them out of the fryer put them into a boil sprinle them with salt and voila, ready to eat, with Mayo!

FRIED IN BEEF FAT !!!  OMG OMG OMG.

Impossible HERE. We're the nation of health-fad-crazed fatsos who go to the the all-you-can-eat salad bar to "watch their weight", shovel down 8 heaping platefuls, and then waddle out the door, huffing and puffing by the time they reach the car parked illegally in a handicapped slot.

But hey, the fried stuff, all 5 pounds of it, was cooked in sunflower oil. ;)

I believe it was Patrick Henry's brother, Biff, who said, "Give you liberty?!? Are you daft, man?!? What about saturated fats? Food with no flavor is death!"

Danny here knows a thing or two about the advantages of cooking with beef fat

For me it would be a little chain in Yakima Washington (where I grew up) called burger ranch. Back in the day they made the buns hand made patties, hand cut fries, the place was great!! Haven't been there for about 6 years so who knows now.

Gaaahhhh...perfect. Double-frying seems to be the secret, also recommended for Canadian poutines.

They tried offshore-sourcing, but by the time the "buns hand made patties, hand cut fries" got here from China, they were too green and fuzzy to be really appealing. Price was right though. ;)

The next leather coat you get, which was made in China, could be Lassie's cousin.

Just had a Taco Bell "smothered burrito" Big ol' mess of meaty-greasy-cheesy-spicy goodness. Not exactly weight-loss health food but hey...I walked 5 miles this morning and pushed the mower for about an hour yesterday. It'll be okay. Really.  B)

Hmmmm...I wonder if it was Chinese cat meat. Low in fat, choo know.

The talk about potatos several posts above, reminds of a chain we use to have around here that I loved. One Potato, Two Potato. They just served baked potatos with diffent toppings. My favorite was their Swiss cheese with shrimp. Yum! But, the chain been gone from around here for many years now. I wonder what happen to them?

I had an interesting pizza at a place right across the street from the site of the St. Valentine's Day massacre- I forget the name of the place, it was like Old Town Pizza or something similar. Anyway, the "pizza" came in an earthenware bowl with a baked crust on top, then you turned the bowl upside-down on a plate and levered off the crust, unleashing a torrent of molten gooey cheese, sauce and meat which of course you had to eat with a fork. It was pretty dang good!

Unless things have changed in recent years, it was the lowest grade of beef approved for human consumption

I understand Taco Bell.  Here is SoCal we have ...'O's all over the place and any given one will produce tacos and burritos that are ten times better than any thing Taco Bell sells, but some times I just gots to has a cheap Taco Bell Taco.  I suppose it goes back to my days in college when I couldn't afford anything else and they really tasted good when I was hungry.  Oh, you haven't heard of the "O's"??  It is a local mom and pop taco shop with the O at the end of the name.  You know, like Roberto's, Umburto's, Alberto's.  There is one about every 500 yards.  Great stuff, local cuisine!  I once saw a post that someone put up about Taco Bell.  It went something like this.  #3!! no I'm not going to Taco Bells for the authentic Mexican cuisine!  I'm going because I only have $5 and I like tacos!

Obviously, you've never eaten C-Rations

s-l225.jpg

Interestingly enough, the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps is responsible for food safety. There were a couple of Vet Corps inspectors checking the C-Rations in our supply room. One of the guys was marking specific cases with a large red "X". I asked him what that meant. "It's not fit for human consumption. That doesn't apply to you. You're Infantry."

We have lots of the 'O's here in Phoenix...usually always yellow and red signage.  Rolberto's, Filiberto's, Isloberto's.. they usually have great breakfast burritos.I think of Taco Bell and Del Taco as authentic imitation Mexican ;)  (Taco Bell was a staple of college life in Ohio and Michigan for me).   But when I want good Mexican food, we have many excellent local Mexican Mom and Pop sit down restaurants around here.

One So Cal Mexican chain that I like from visits to So Cal is King Taco...
