Art? It is more like f-art!

Such was said about that no-name housepainter guy whose dropcloths ended up on gallery walls instead of in the dumpster. What was his name? Jackson Pollock?

Oh really? I think I have one of his "paintings" folded up in my garage. I have it on exhibition everytime I do some home improvements! ?

If you click on his name and select other items, then in the left margin you can go down and select Sold items you can see what he sells.  What is astonishing to me is that he has over 9000 positive feedbacks and not a single negative or neutral one.  Something strange it going on here.

Why do you think that?  The items he sells are clearly shown in photographs and described accurately - he is not hiding anything.  It seems that some buyers just go for "his" type of models. There are a lot of strange people in this world (even including us). :)

Too bad that eBay no longer allows members to view other member's profiles.  We could look at his buyer's profiles to see what kind of things they buy besides junky models.

I've actually considered one of his van builds. I think it might have been a Dodge van that I wanted to find, and his was the only one out there. I briefly thought of buying one of his builds, dropping it in the pruple pond, and doing a complete rebuild.

But then I decided I have enough projects.

I'm not going to knock the guy though. He builds stuff, he puts it up for sale, and people buy it. He is making money building models. Can't fault a guy for that!

:)

All those pictures bring to mind, firecrackers and models. Looks like maybe he has all ready introduced them to each other. If he hasn't maybe he should.

OK, that makes me feel a little better.  I just clicked on his Feedback (9164!) and looked thru 5 pages of items he's actually sold. He sells a LOT of stuff.  In scale model sales, not many of the Junkyard Clown Cars seem to have sold.  Many sales were die-casts, especially Matchbox, Corgi, Motor Max, ERTL etc.  And some plastic deals that seemed reasonable.  Also, he accepted lots of offers below his asking price.  So other than his fetish for eyesore built models, he seems legit.

I know a local estate-sale guy who works about the same way.  He lucked into a gigantic stash of old model cars, including some Unobtainium Modelhaus full resin kits.  He didn't know much about models, but researched on eBay. So we won't be getting any rare kits for $2.00 from him.  But his prices are generally reasonable, and for most things he's willing to take an offer.

Here's one of Tom Geiger's favorite kits that he has for sale right now.  Buy It Now for $18.99 or make an offer. If you click on "Seller's Other Items" in the listing, you'll see lots of off-topic stuff.  But he always puts "model" in his listing headers for scale models.  So on his "Other Items" page, just search on the word "model" and it will filter out everything but the kits:

Oh, I get it now, these are like pinatas for the parties! No assembly necessary.

Light em up and STAND BACK!

But where do you put the candy?

But is it art?

It could very well be therapy. Nobody will probably ever know the backstory, but what if this was your son, daughter, nephew, cousin, etc. who had a debilitating disease and this is how s/he kept from going insane? Maybe the caregiver/parent is selling the built models to pay for the builder's health care needs, or maybe many other possible things.

That's possible, but if it was for a fundraising venture, i would think people should be told that! I'm sure folks would be absolutely glad to help a worthy cause.

Perhaps there is something going on here that we are missing.  Maybe this is a disabled person or persons and the community is buying to support them.

I've actually bought from the guy you all are referring to...years ago. I got a pretty sweet deal on a load of 1/24 and 1/25 C1 Corvette gluebombs, and several vintage AMT '25, '29, '32 and '36 Ford junk parts lots that were almost entirely usable...after stripping off the brush-painted enamel.

There was also someone on the board a while back who bought a built-up, and was appalled that it was even dirtier than it looked in the photos, and included insect parts and rodent droppings (at no additional cost).

The whole scenario doesn't make much sense, but there doesn't seem to be any limit to fools being ready to part with their money.

Just look at the stuff wonderingly, and laugh.

PS. The idea that many of these were built by someone with a disability was touched on a while back too, and for the older, dirt-covered builds, the sheer number of them available at one point (all having been converted to "station wagon" configurations) seemed to support this theory.

As much as we joke about the quality of these builds I don't see a mental handicap here. My nephew has special needs and he loves cars but there is a level of understanding of the rules of what makes up a car that he just doesn't possess, four wheels, an engine, exhaust pipes and so forth. I'm not trying to get on my soapbox or anything, it's actually far more interesting to me that a person of sound mind looked at this stuff and said "yep, that's good enough". With the amount of toy parts used I would almost speculate that these were built by a kid transitioning from toys to models but there's just so many of them and the kits span such a long period, there are lots that haven't been out since the seventies but the bottle the tractor is made from has only been around for the last ten or so years. Maybe a kid was given a relative's model collection and plowed through it with childhood gusto and no appreciation for the value or rarity of some of the kits.

Point well made! Makes sense!

I guess I just want to know why they came to be?

It's not important, but It just makes me wonder.

Like you said, we may never know.

Yep, any frustration I might have expressed is NOT towards someone who is just building what he likes, and then seeing if anyone wants to buy. Nothin' wrong with that!! You should see the remains of the models I built as a kid...oof. I kept 'em though.

Great point Casey, their is a story behind many builds. I once purchased a Monogram 540k Mercedes and the lady told me she was selling it for her neighbor who son died and it belonged to him and included one he started. The one he started was really bad and he had a mental disorder I remember her telling me. I remember this story every time I see one of these kit and wonder how the women is doing after 18 years. I build one and kept the one he started...
