Such a shame about the nail paint. I am sure you will rescue this though. I've never tried using this stuff, but your comment about the realistic scaled metallic finish is intriguing! I must try it. Is it enamel based or laquer?

Great work on those little details.

Nail polish is a fairly "hot" lacquer.  Similar to regular automotive paints.  They come in a huge range of colors, and with metallic flakes ranging from huge (larger than what is used on those sparkly bass-boats) to small enough to look totally smooth (no flake, just metallic sheen).  For me the scale size of the paint's metallic flakes on a model is important.  For example the Testor's One Coat paints have metallic flakes which look too large for 1:24 or smaller models.  This is not as noticeable when viewed in person, but when photographed, the model painted using oversize metallic flakes paint looks terrible.

Here is an example of a model I build and painted using nail polish.  It is 1:43 scale, and the metallic flake in that nail polish is really small, so it works well on that model.  Another good thing about nail polishes is that they come in glass bottles, so you can see the size of its metallic flakes - not like a "mystery paint" you get in a spray can.

I hope that Kurt doesn't mind me posting a photo of my model here.

...not trying to be mean, but just suprised, Bud....

Another reason regarding wire wheels, use flat photo-etch or kit wheels.  In this case stayed with plastic wire wheels.  I'll fake it until I make it.

Thanks.  Good answer below.

Thanks for the answer, wasn't sure how to answer it anyway. ?  I went to the auto paint store and got high quality "slow" lacquer thinner just for using with nail 'polish', but also use it for all the other enamels.  No worries posting the picture, that looks fabulous!  Between you and Duke, I have to step up my game!

Started the brake fluid remediation task. ?  Posting pictures would be like rubber-necking a wreck on the highway.

I'd pick nice plastic wires EVERY time over the flat PE spoke sets.

I'm amazed what some have done with glue bombs, when the kit has not been available for a long time, and people pay big bucks on eVilbay for them.  I'm keeping that in mind now as I dig out of the hole.

I will say that Tamiya primer is impressing me!  Brake fluid didn't do much, needed to wet-sand.  Took another step back breaking the windshield frame, I'm sure many got broken in the box at this point, the silver plastic has the swirl meeting point there.

Gouged a groove, superglued in wire.  Can fine tune bend and screw with this for awhile, later.

Kurt can rescue it, he's that good. I'll vouch for pearl nail polish paint as a scale metalflake, too. Back when I was still using my airbrush (I'll have to get back into it sometime), I used a pearl orange for the flames on my Diablo flambé. I got it to fade darker to the backs of the flame licks without much difficulty.

BUMMER, but this is a great journey!

Yea, just a speed bump at the apex of a high speed corner.

Since I was playing with brake fluid, started The Green Barge '69 Chevy pickup.

Kurt...bummer about your paint...happens to all of us. Are you still going to go the nail polish route. I have sprayed a lot of that and most of my success has been over black primer.
Especially for the real fine pearl.  The black makes it stand out. Do a test. Here's a good word in for you to the paint gods. ...

Thanks for the help. ?  I did black on my Monster Miata, with what looked like a white with purple pearl, ended up looking like purple.

I'm trying something different, called patience. ?  Have done one coat primer, then found holes and gaps (such as around headlight buckets) which got filled with superglue only (no baking soda), wet-sanded, then sprayed second coat of primer.  Then I mixed a slightly lighter purple for the base color.  So far, so good!  ??

Parts are for the '69 Chevy pickup.

Nirvana!  Finally figured out the trick, quick spray sweeps, a little more thinned than model paints, do a coat, screw around with the airbrush by cleaning the tip in the bottle of thinner to clean off accumulated paint, blow some thinner to clear out the needle, reload with paint, repeated three times.  Made sure everything was pushed to the back of the bench to avoid any thinner splashing on it (learned that hard lesson long ago).  Also took off my sweat pants, to reduce lint and static charge. ?  Now the patience thing should be done, before I spray gloss over this.

Looks good from where I sit Kurt! ?

As far as getting the model room ready for paint.......one of the things I do is to make sure NO cats are around! It'll never fail that if they step into the room, one of their hairs is BOUND to find its way onto the paint. But with the noise of my dual chamber compressor, as soon as that baby turns on they're OUTTA THERE!

Amazing the static cling power of cat hair.  Another thing I'm trying to avoid, using the paper towel at all before painting, minimal movement of *anything*.

Ohh yeah, that paint looks GRRRREAT

Thank you!  Not touching it for a few days, then clear coats.  That patience thing has to work..... ?

Body-paint... the part I hate the most... seems SOMETHING always has to go wrong...

?

At least you are sticking with it and not yelling and throwing the whole project in the trash!

I know right? ?☄️??  Because these are so rare, that would be the worst.

Wait a few days, right.....  Sprayed two sessions, using House Of Color clear, which requires 200% thinner!   I have lint specks, I know there will be tiny blemishes after polishing out, but whenever I **** with something to "fix" it, I **** it up even more.  The clear brings out the color really well. ?

Looks great.

Appreciate it! ?

Today on the list is the tool bag.  All I wanted to know is the shade of blue for the jack.  Found one on eBay for $22,500 ?, found this blog article about one on auction that sold for *only* $18,000.

Different color hammers, and other items, so I should be given leeway. ?
