crowe-t Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 (edited) I'll be painting a body soon in black. I have base coat lacquer and gloss clear which I'm used to spraying. I see a lot of black cars without clear. I'd like to see how black comes out with clear. Edited May 1, 2020 by crowe-t
Plowboy Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 I clear over every color. This is the only black one I have.
Snake45 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 This isn't going to tell you what you want to know, but.... Photos of other builders' black paint aren't going to tell you much. YOUR results are going to depend entirely on how well YOU can polish out the clearcoat.
Hard_2_Handle_454 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Sorry for a long post, but that's the majority of the black cars in my collection SAM_2373 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_1993 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (259) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_2351 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_2535 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (88) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (103) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (173) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (178) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (193) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (208) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr 1 (253) by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_2540 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_0364 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_2551 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_0646 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr SAM_0010 by Eric Lucas, on Flickr
crowe-t Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Thanks Roger and Eric for the pictures! They look great.

I've read a few posts regarding black paint and some guys have said black looks better without clear. All my builds have clear over the color which I polish. I just wanted to get an idea of how black looks with clear. I like what I'm seeing in these pictures.
henry57 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 But just to add to the discussion, this is single stage PPG enamel. No clear and no polishing.
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 I've built a few. All with Duplicolor "Universal Black" and Duplicolor clear lacquer. 1960 Mercury Parklane Convertible 1962 Ford Sunliner Convertible 1963 Pontiac Bonneville Hardtop Steve

If you go to the "Tips, Tricks and Tutorials" section. there is a thread called "Wheel Arch Molding Foiling Tutorial". It shows my method for foiling not only wheel arches, but all of the body trim, utilizing blue painters tape as a guide. Steve
Classicgas Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 A lot depends on the paint. Some have more inherent gloss than others. 1. This 68 Chevelle is painted off the gun with Matthews gloss black poly Same model and paint with Matthews clear poly added You can see it added a little depth. This 70 Chevelle was painted with walmart Color Place gloss black then cleared with Testors Wet Look lacquer

My process will officially be changed. I also like someone else's tip to color the tip of the blade for contrast. That has always been a challenge (seeing where I am going)
gman Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 There are some stunning black finishes in this thread. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/profile/9892-lovefordgalaxie/ ^^ this forum member has produced a number of great black finishes (heck, a number of great finishes in general) also

Steve
crowe-t Posted May 4, 2020 Author Posted May 4, 2020 A friend had said he thought black with clear looked a bit out of scale. I like how clear looks if it's not too thick. From what I see above in all these pictures clear over black looks great. I'm used to spraying base coat/clear coat lacquers. I think I'll use the clear.
Kmidd65 Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Here is one I did a few years back. Tamiya Black with Testor's Glosscote Lacquer. The decals were terrible so I had to seal them in with a coat of Future floor polish to protect them...

Brutalform Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Some very smooth as glass paint jobs on this thread. It could be better but it’s the only car I did black so far. While polishing the clear, I broke through to the black on the drivers door. After adding Future to it, I can’t even tell where it is now.

Kmb0319 Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Here’s a couple of mine... I actually don’t recall the paint and clear I used. Most likely Duplicolor for the paint, but I’ve tried tons of different clears over the years.
