The trifecta should be irresistible to these types of ebay sellers: RARE Pro built screwbottom.

?"Probable Rip Off"  I have never heard that before and I love it!  In my opinion Pro means you get paid for it.

Now if I were to do this(I've done commissions before but never sold on any auction web site) I would be inclined to use "national award winning" and list the awards.  That would say more about your skills than just Pro built. Seeing that still wouldn't guarantee a quality job, but at least it would be more meaningful.

That is very true, Pete. IMHO, anything can be “Pro built”. But, if someone has some evidential proof of the item’s success, that’s a little different.

Kinda like buying a painting instead of just supplies to paint your own?

There are people who admire nicely built models who don’t possess the skills the build them.

Slightly OT.

Years ago my folks were members of the Horseless Carriage Club. I remember that we had one guy who joined who did not know a wrench from a screwdriver. He was an accountant, and had the mechanical instincts of a Goldfish. He joined the club, and within 3 months bought a nicely restored '26 Ford Model T Roadster Pickup, from a member of the Club. "Bob" was an enthusiastic member of the Club. He and his T, made every event we held. He would take his T over to the original owners house for maintenance, and repairs. He even learned some small repair skills with his car. When I left, "Bob" was running for president of the Club.  "Bob" could never have restored that T. Heck, he could not even drive it, when he bought it. Nonetheless, he was crazy about Old Cars, and he knew enough to know that he could only do so much. It never stopped him, from having fun.

It is easily possible that for some people, Building a Model is just not going to happen. That does not stop them from appreciating Models, though. So, They buy what they cannot build. As long, as they don't try to pass off the builds as their own work, I'm happy to have them in my hobby!

This one has been relisted in ebay's Vintage category for over year, started out at Buy it Now $115. Those who remember the Monogram red & black Early Iron '30 phaeton will easily recognize tand guess why it hasn't sold yet.

Actually, That wasn't really the point of my posting this thread. I wasn't trying to discredit or in any way belittle people who actually enjoy nice, well built miniatures. Whether they built them or not.

What I find insulting is uninformed, opportunistic scammers who try to pass off an obviously "slapped together" dog of a model kit that was not believably built by someone with talent in the first place, but was stuck together some time ago, put away for 50 years and just happened to be pulled out of a dusty box from a deceased persons estate sale. Then pawned off as if a professional had dedicated his time to lovingly complete for some cherished collector.

Phoooey!!!

Just sell it for what it is. A used glue bomb! Face it Scraps, your 10 year old is not a "Pro Builder". Just because you think it's his best work, doesn't mean that the rest of us are gullible enough to fork over $125 clams to buy it!

I have a buddy that IS a pro builder. He got into a group of folks in the real car world.....hooked up with folks with real money, some famous.....some just money....builds commission now. He does not do the net as many of his customers do not want folks knowing they collect model cars. He does do pro work......

My wife says I should sell my models, and I say nobody makes money doing this.  Now I read your comment and wonder.

Last century I attended a Monterey Historics (a year Ferrari was featured), in the art section was a guy selling built models, saw a Tamiya 312T that I built, his was hardly professional quality, was about to talk to him but saw he was wrapping up a deal.  I want to say his price was $300 - $500, and was amazed he was selling them.  Wondered if he paid for the space and made any money.

Had to check out this thread.......

My pet peeve is people who take an old glue bomb that’s missing the hood and a few other parts, smear some rust color paint on it and list it as a pro built weathered junker.  Sometimes adding rat rod to the description!

I am built model buyer. Back when I had a little more extra cash, I would buy a model from a builder who's work I admired. I've got a few nice models that are an interesting part of my collection. I'd buy an RRR classic if the circumstances were right.

Thanks for the compliment, but they're not for sale. I was at a 1:1 car show with a model car show as part of it many years (decades) ago. A guy with a full sized car similar to one of my models on display insisted that I sell my model to him. I politely refused and he started to get huffy with me (???). Selling one of my builds would be like selling an offspring, maybe some day I'll sell some off when I need the cash? Who knows????  I have been asked several times to build a specific model car for cash, again, I politely refuse, I'm not sure I could ever do that. The subject matter has to be something that I'm really interested in, otherwise, it holds no joy for me.  -RRR

Now that you mentioned it, I do have maybe a dozen models in my collection by others.  The pink and black Crown Vic was built by Harry. The white wagon was built by Todd McWilliams, you may remember him.  I bought them to remember my departed friends.

The "Pro" term is used for nothing more than to make an extra buck! Sadly greed has taken over and ruined most everything. If some of these sellers were honest and cut the BS with all this "rare" and "pro built" they would probably get more return business. One thing to remember is something is worth what someone is willing to pay so i guess if a person feels like they got a good deal then thats all that matters.

I get you Rodney. I can't see ever selling a model I built for myself. I have built a few models by request. Almost every time I say I will never do that again.

But lucky for me, some people are willing to sell their creations  - even if I am not one of them.   Here they are in case you are interested. And to keep it on topic a couple of them are from "Pro Builders"  (as in people who make money by building car models) or are known builders via magazines and such.

I feel this way too. I just don’t get the guys who finish a model and offload it before started the next one.

I haven’t built to order. I don’t need the pressure to build quickly and I found that most folks don’t have any idea the effort required, thus want to pay very little.

I have given away a few models. Above ya my sister in law’s Chevette. Back in the last century I helped her buy her first car when she was 17.  She was talking to me at a holiday get together about her friends all talking about their first cars, and how she fondly remembered us buying the Chevette. She kept it 10 years and it never failed her. So I found a promo curbside car and built it for her. She was so excited! It sits on her home desk today.

More recently I built this trio during the pandemic.  The restaurant on the logo is doing good work for charity so I built two of these for them.

I have had people ask to buy my models that are near and dear to me. As with you, they are not for sale!

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against someone building on commission and if one could make a living doing that, more power to you. At the slow rate I build, I'd starve and the prospective buyer would probably pass away before I finished it!  -RRR
