Dennis Lacy Posted October 10, 2021 Author Posted October 10, 2021 @Kit Karson Nice to see that fancy new paint booth getting broken in! @alan barton Chassis is looking good. Cool to see those Enkei directional wheels getting put to use. 1
Kit Karson Posted October 11, 2021 Posted October 11, 2021 @alan bartonBurgundy? Should look very cool! Alan, that kolor is for the interior: Just needs a bit of detail... @alan barton How are you going to hold your doors while painting, Kit? Not to disappoint, but the doors are not going to swing... going to secure them prior to painting the cab. -KK
bill-e-boy Posted October 12, 2021 Posted October 12, 2021 Been away from the modelling desk for a few days. Had the grandsnots over for 10 days and they do not leave much time to be at my desk. My what a lot has been going on I am worried about the red base model colour and the intention is to use light blue I sprayed the RPU doors last night with Tamiya white surfacer and one of the doors Tamiya Platinum Silver out of the small jars. Thinned it with lacquer thinners as usual The choice for this paint is because a while ago I painted a Revell 56 Nomad with it as one of the colours. I messed it up and brake fluid would not touch it so must be bullet proof. I will spray the silver door again with the surfacer then with the Testors blue I used on the chassis and engine Keeping my fingers crossed

Except of course building it as intended. I am curious about that earlier edition of the truck you are talking about. Any pictures? As far as I know it's the only kit that has a well detailed version of the Mustang II/Pinto front suspension, and those super wide rear tires but with a modern style diameter fit better under a street rod than using the huge Pro-Street size tires. In fact I've been able to get two of those BB II kits for the front suspension and steering set ups but definitely could use a couple more if I could get just those pieces it would make me extremely happy.

alan barton Posted October 12, 2021 Posted October 12, 2021 Midnight blue - nice!!!! Years ago a friend had a '34 coupe, painted a very, very dark Volvo blue. He called it Snot Black, because every time someone mentioned the colour of his car, he would reply "'S'not Black!!!!!! Still psyching myself up to see if I can hang those doors...... Cheers Alan 1
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 I admire your ability to stick with a project for this long. I get bored/frustrated with projects that drag on too long. I'm good for 4-8 weeks and then the project seems to slide over to the side of the bench as I chase a new 'squirrel'. I have the '63 Nova sedan delivery and the COE ramp truck sitting over to the side. That means they 'may' get pushed back to the center of the bench, if they go back in a box they rarely get dragged back out. Carry on, gents..... -RRR
alan barton Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Quote I was going to fit the hinges tonight but decided against it as the cab structure is very fragile so I thought it best to wait until all other bodywork was finalised. It seemed liek a good idea to try fitting a hood. I seem to have painted myself into a bit of a corner, however! Using the 1/24th scale Bandai clone fender unit gave me some extra wheelbase to help fit the stretch cab, which is a good thing, but now I find a new problem. I went to fit the Revell hood sides and tops but there were all sorts of issues here. The Revell hinging arrangements leave a massive wedge shaped gap in the middle but worse still, the hood would not reach to grille shell. Didn't see that coming but maybe I should have! My next thought was to try a Monogram hood. It is a pretty good fit at the cowl after thinning the trailing edge a smidgen but it is the same length as the Revell 1/25th scale hood, thus the gap is still there! I have lengthened hoods before and it is not my favourite job - keeping all the contours working , keeping a smooth, even curve to wrap around the grill, yeah, a bit of a challenge. I found a lacquer etched wreck of a hood in the Model A pickup box, might see if I can use that to make the additional length and work from there. Anyone with better ideas, I am all ears!!! Cheers Alan
Can-Con Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 That's odd. I never really had that problem with mine. But then again, mine didn't have the extent of modifications yours does Alan. 1
alan barton Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Wow, Steve, that is just stunning! You could hop right inside it and drive it away! That just might be the sweetest version of that kit that I have ever seen. And you are right abut the modifications. It really is a domino effect! I have been planning this one very carefully to avoid that sort of problem and until now I thought I was doing really well but this hood issue snuck up from behind. I did the lengthening job on the hood last night before I turned the lights out and if the modifications don't leave tell-tale shadows in the paint, it should work pretty well. Cheers Alan
alan barton Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 I've got the hood fitting after quite a long session at the bench and it is now primed and waiting for my return. The 1/24th scale fender unit is quite a bit longer from the cowl forward than the 1/25th scale unit. I think I have managed to avoid the Pinnochio look but still might get another mm off it. Cheers Alan
bill-e-boy Posted October 21, 2021 Posted October 21, 2021 Alan - with extended cab and longer hood (bonnet) it looks as though it has had a mild chop - looking good I too am dreading the doors and making a hood fit as with mine I lengthened the wheel base a tad which you do when you lower a car in the front if you can. I see you have extended your wheel base too with some added at the front. It stop the car looking like it is tripping over IMO Up date soon - I have been doing a lot of small but time consuming jobs

bill-e-boy Posted October 23, 2021 Posted October 23, 2021 After worrying about bleed through on the paint over the red model I needn't have worried. The red dye did not bleed through with either methods I have added a tuck and roll strip to the hood liner. I have some grooved plastic strip that was prefect for the job. I will add some to the pick up bed cove when I get that far I have been toiling away at getting the body all cleaned up ready for paint. I chose to delete the gas tank filler as I will be using the Lil John saddle tanks. There were quite a few sink marks around the cowl so took a bit of time to get it looking OK I also cut the seat riser form the Lil John kit and left enough behind the rear of the seat as this will cover a notch where the extended chassis rails clashed with the cab. Checked the fit of the seats - looking good Also have been working on the firewall recess and toe board. Need to make a small transmission tunnel for clearance so this point I have ground away the floor board and firewall ready for this There is still a mountain of small things to do but getting there Thanks for looking
Kit Karson Posted October 24, 2021 Posted October 24, 2021 I'm impressed with the progress everyone is making on they're Tribute builds! As for me... one step forward and two steps back: Yard Sale 10-23-21 - parts headed to the purple pond! Teal paint job over the Dark Blue... something I've wanted to do for a very long time went south! Great kolor... lousy result. Had to change out the valve covers... the painted covers didn't fit into the firewall... Somewhat pleased with the rear end placement! -KK
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted October 24, 2021 Posted October 24, 2021 Looks better than any of my paint jobs!!! ? -RRR

( Even if I am using the most obvious one!) A big cross-Tasman shout out to you for alerting me to the fact that I handed filled the fuel cap hole - I would have been really annoyed if I had it in colour before I noticed - seems to happen a lot lately. Also thanks for the idea of using the T seat risers - so obvious and yet I just hadn't thought of it! When we are all finished with our projects, there are going to be a bunch of Model A pickups with a bunch of similarities and a bunch of differences! 7 hours ago, Kit Karson said: I'm impressed with the progress everyone is making on they're Tribute builds! The photos show a smooth, deep, glossy paint job that I would be more than happy with. Dust? Runs? Bubbles on the bottom edge? Enquiring minds want to know! Cheers Alan
Zippi Posted October 25, 2021 Posted October 25, 2021 I think the results of the paint job looks pretty darn good to me.

The PU & Trailer deserve a better paint job than what you see in the pictures... the camera can be tamed to lie! Could have gone ahead and finished the build with it being a marginally fair paint job, but it would have never been seen by the public at large!! Never the less, work continues on the lesser parts of the '29 PU & Trailer. '29 PU Headers and, Tail Pipes from the classic Revell Deuce Kit(s)... -KK
Kit Karson Posted October 27, 2021 Posted October 27, 2021 A: Time Scrubbing Q: What are your immediate future plans? One part at a time... Continued progress on connecting the exhaust system... Marked the cut lines with a Fine Point Sharpie... Less than two minutes in the bleach (I prefer Westley's)... Chrome gone pen lines remained! (Backside) Started shortening the down tubes... After the main cuts were made... the secondary cuts were started, but not cut all the way through. A little CA... Shortened headers on the left... need klean up on isle 1! -KK
Dennis Lacy Posted October 28, 2021 Author Posted October 28, 2021 @Kit Karson Nice work on the sectioned header pipes! Shame about the paint job but at least now you’ve had some warming up and the new paint will go better.
Kit Karson Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 Day 1 Some progress... Day 2 After a half a dozen fresh water baths with vigorous scrubbings... Back in the slim over night... Day 3 Tooth picks reach into the 90 degree corners... more klear water baths while stiff bristles dig & lift dry paint... primer spots are giving way to the original white plastic! Removing the layers taught me a lesson on covering some areas more often than others. Thick in places and even non existent in others. Everything back in the slim, once again! -KK
Kit Karson Posted October 31, 2021 Posted October 31, 2021 Update: What is less fun than watching paint dry? Waiting while the paint dissolves under a scrubbing toothbrush & poked into pulp with a wooden toothpick! I must say, it is difficult to quit when you get results like this: These parts could be on the verge of being ready to paint, @Speedpro!?. Back to the scrub board! -KK
