doorsovdoon Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 I've seen a few of these '59 Imperials posted on the forum and just had to pick one up after seeing how good they can look. This AMT model is more than just basic, it's literally a curbside promo model! If you exclude the custom parts in the box there's probably less than fifteen parts to build this thing! I've decided to go with the convertible option, black with beige and white interior.

Back when the tooling was found, it was missing parts.. I believe the chrome tree. I know Dave Burket/ Model King ponied up the funds to bring it back.

I'm glad it was brought back from the dead, for how basic it is it's a very attractive model. Would love to see more of these basic kits brought back, even as promos.

The danger of this, as well as having a catalog of 60 year old tooling, is that consumers often don’t understand. Someone buys a kit that was recently tooled with intricate parts and full detail, and then the next box they open is this Chrysler tooled up in 1959! A big difference in both what was possible and expected back in the day vs current technology. There have been the challenges of consumers screaming bloody murder that they’ve been taken. There was a guy on the boards a couple years ago that got the Model King version of this kit and complained that Model King kits were garbage and he’d never buy another. It took some explaining!
Spottedlaurel Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 Thta's going to look great Gareth, look forward to seeing it come together. Lots of careful detail painting required on the interior I imagine, especially with it being a convertible?
dimaxion Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 Builds up to a Great addition to ant Imperial Collection . This MoPar Tribute build I spent two months on when the Model King Released the kit . Actual Factory Replica . Yes , don't say it . I admit I am retentive .

doorsovdoon Posted March 29, 2021 Author Posted March 29, 2021 Well, this build is almost finished, Lol. Got most of the interior done, just some detailing to do and then on to the dashboard. I hand painted the exhausts on the underside but it looked like a five year old did it! I very rarely use brush paints for anything, it's all aerosol, so I spent the best part of an hour, maybe two, masking off the underside around the exhausts. Painstaking but much neater job like this.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 Lots of work to mask for sure, but indeed it is often worth spending the time.
GLMFAA1 Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 Just what was your thought pattern of masking the whole underbody as opposed to shooting the exhaust then masking the just the exhaust and shoot the underbody? greg

bisc63 Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 (edited) Got a few of these in the stash, love the big Chryslers and Imperials. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this. Some embossing powder or flocking really pays off for carpeting detail on a convertible kit, will you be adding any? Edited March 30, 2021 by bisc63 typo
Kromolly Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Looks like a good kit to break out on a rainy Saturday afternoon and have it done by dinner time! ? I like it what you are doing.

Dave did a LOT of restoration work on RC2 owned tooling. I headed up the NASCAR Monte Carlo resto......it was a mess, body broken and parts missing. Dave did/does a lot for the hobby.
TimJ Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Nice work so far. I've got the Model King boxing of this kit in the stash so I'll be watching your progress.

I don't have any unfortunately, I'll have to take a look online. I have been meaning to get some, seeing builds done with flocking, the interiors look so much nicer.
doorsovdoon Posted March 31, 2021 Author Posted March 31, 2021 Polished the paintwork and started on the chrome work and dang, she's already looking good! Interior is pretty much finished and got the glass in. Only some small detailing left and this one is done. The hubcaps are nicely detailed in this kit and separate from the actual wheels which can be painted body colour leaving a nice clean line around the rims when the caps are fitted.
doorsovdoon Posted April 1, 2021 Author Posted April 1, 2021 Thanks, guys, she's done. Super fast and super easy build, and looks amazing for such a simple kit. I'll post more pics in completed section.
Sixties Sam Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Very nice build! Looks good in black. I like simple kits like that. My first AMT kit was a '58 Imperial convert, back in 1958! Sam
ewetwo Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 That looks great. I might have to copy it. :-) I have a couple in the store room. Why I haven't built it I do not know.
