Thanks for the info Casey and I have seen them out there.  I've had my identity stolen and CC compromised multiple times so ordering online is a last resort for me anymore now adays.  Waiting for my local hobby shop to get them in.

Here are links to two copies of the instructions. As other have said the engine is supposed to be a Ford 427, but is a poor representation. Wheels were retooled to resemble Centerlines in the 1980's but are not great either.

I see that Model Roundup has the 51 Henry J in stock now.  This means my local hobby shop should be getting them in any time.  I'll have to make a trip to the hobby shop next week.

If you want a good engine, throw the silly mess that's in the kit out.

Same goes for the rear axle.

Work slowly and carefully on the multi-piece hood and opening features.

For all the whining and complaining, this kit WILL make a great looking model with a little applied intelligence.

Where do you get a nice FE Ford from, or is it a cammer in this kit ? The answer may help the OP but I'd use one in a street rod or street and strip car personally.

The kit includes a not-good cammer...or maybe a mashup of cammer and Boss; I can't tell for sure exactly what it's supposed to be.

I've been pretty blown away by how popular this kit has been since it hit my shelf. Moved a case of them faster even than the Chevy II Wagons when they hit.

I think that's because it hasn't been out in a while. The 51 henry j kits bought 10 years ago are in everyone stashes of kits ( I have 2 in mine) & the younger modelers ( under 40 ) have never seen or heard of this kit.

I know the engine and rear end are no good in this kit, but so are the wheels. I thought they may have improved them because they look better on this box art, but when I watched the HPI Guy video, I see they are the same. The tires look better though. I have the old Saints issue, so I probably won't buy this one, but someday I want to build it like the one that was on the cover of Hot Rod when I was a kid in the 80's. Genuine California BBC street racer, I always thought it was about as cool as they get......

That's the exhaust header collector sticking through the hole in the fender.

I totally agree with the comments about how rough this kit is out of the box.  I recall being tremendously disappointed when the kit came out; I was expecting something with the same overall quality and detail of Revell's Anglia and Thames kits that were introduced 2-3 years earlier.  Still, it can be made into a decent looking model.  This was mine, inspired by some parts swapping as demo'ed in Don Emmon's excellent June 1966 R&C article on the Anglia kit, into a mid-1960's style street rod, powered by the Anglia injected Olds engine...
