OldNYJim Posted September 11, 2021 Posted September 11, 2021 Got a Revell Vette snap kit as a gift a while back, and it’s only polite to build kits that you get as gifts…and I wanted to do a patriotic themed paintjob for a while so here goes nothing… The kit, on it’s wheels: The body didn’t take a bunch of prep - I removed the door handles and cleaned up some little flaws and imperfections but nothing too major. After another coat of primer, I shot a base of Wicked Colors silver: And then spent an hour or so laying out some masks that I’ll use to paint this thing: Those components will make sense as we go, hopefully… First step tonight was to cut out a bunch of stars and lay out a pattern, over which I’ll paint the first part of the colorscheme. Next, a little shading with some black: I wanted a very subtle fade from black, at the nose, to a dark purple then into a rich bright blue, so next up was a little band of Createx Candy Red: Then, Createx bright blue candy over the whole thing… …followed by an hour of really careful de-masking - tada! Tomorrow’s job will be sealing what’s there already under a little pearl blue and silver to really make those curvy bodylines pop nicely, and then I can mask for the stripy part of the Stars and Stripes! More soon! ?? 1
OldNYJim Posted September 12, 2021 Author Posted September 12, 2021 (edited) Thanks fellas! Shot the whole thing with Future clear yesterday to form a barrier coat, then laid down some flame masks and then silver last night as a base for the next part…the stripes to go along with those stars! Masking up over the silver for the stripes: Mixed up some candy red to lay over top, and then shot a fade of red from front to back, with it a little deeper and more intense at the front fading to nothing as the stripes wrap over the trunk lid, and then removed the stripes and added a little transparent black fade over the black to add some depth and interest: And, soon as it was all dry, peeled back the tape to see where we’re at… I shot a coat of Future over the whole paintjob so far before I took these pics, and once it tacked up I shot a second light coat of Future mixed with a burgundy pearl mica powder. Once that dries, I’ll shoot a coat of clear plus bright red pearl over THAT, followed by clear plus bright blue, then finally clear plus some silver and white. I’d really like this thing to sparkle red white and blue when you get up close! Still more paintwork to go, but it’s looking pretty so far I think! More soon! Edited September 12, 2021 by CabDriver

FLHCAHZ Posted September 15, 2021 Posted September 15, 2021 Fantastic! Are you going to clear over the future? 1
OldNYJim Posted September 27, 2021 Author Posted September 27, 2021 Thanks everyone! So…this one got a do-over. I fixed a couple of flaws in the paint and got ready to mask for the next stage, and all the candy colored parts I had masked over started peeling off, even with my favorite almost-no-tack masking tape that I like for multi-layered paintjobs like this. The Future held up - but the candy color was pulling back from the silver base, which I hadn’t had happen before. Bummer, but this is AMERICA, we don’t let a little flaky paint stop us hitting our goals! ????? So…do-over with a slightly simpler paintjob with less masking and less chance of having that issue again… First up, blue flames: Next, the lettering that bit me on the previous version before I’d even finished it…laid down a mask and shot black, and peeled back the lower copy: Followed by candy over top of that exposed silver - tada! Helpful hint for anyone painting lettering like this - if you ever have a little spot like you see on the ‘T’ there where the thin line of paint fails when you’re de-masking, a Gelly Roll gel pen is GREAT for fixing that. They’re a buck or two at Michael’s, and stand up to acrylic clears just fine. Next, the stripes… It’s starting to look like it should! You can see a couple of little flaws in the edge on that pic above, but a fine brush and some silver will fix those easily enough… Then, add the stars to the Stars and Stripes! And finally for this weekend, shot a coat of pearl-infused clear over top just to give it a little shimmer as the light hits the edges: Thanks for looking - more soon! ?? 1
