Been planning this one out for a couple months after seeing a pic of the real '29 "Fat Jack" Robinson built for Chuck Hoffman.

Built by Fat Jack Robinson for Chuck Hoffman (4)

This won't be an exact replica of the car but more of an "inspired by" kinda build.

I'll be using one of the frames from the new Revell "A" hotrod kits, adapting it to the AMT body and fenders.

It'll be SBC powered, maybe the one from the Revell kit but I haven't decided yet. I'm thinking a dual quad on a tunnel ram manifold though.

I was gonna go with the 6 carb setup from the AMT '23 roadster but I've misplaced those parts. Been looking for 2 days now and can't find them at all so it's on to plan B.

But, it will be black with lots of chrome and Buick Skylark wheels from the Silhouette showcar kit.

So far I've laid down an acceptable black paintjob on the body and fenders. It's Tamiya spray airbrushed on over Duplicolor charcoal grey primer.

I'll polish it out some in a few days after it's had a chance to gas out for a while.

Very nice project you've got there. Off to a great start. What is going to make or brake the look of this model or any full fendered Hotrod for that matter, is your choice f wheels and tires and the rake they would create.

I dig it so far!! The 1:1 inspiration has some serious rubber rake going on. Back tires could be the Revell '32 Roadster units, front...I have no idea!

Put some of the front suspension together today so I could see how the frame plays with the fender unit.

The wheels and tires I;m using would sit way too wide for the fenders so I cut off the mounting bosses and drilled out the centers so they would fit snugly over the ends of the axle.

I also found a pair of brake disks I did the same with, shown on the axle.

Here's how it's sitting now on the front axel. Still needs to be a bit lower. I'll shave some off the tip of the spring and cut the trough in the crossmember a bit deeper. That should get it down to at least close to where I want it.

Front tires are from the Revell '32 Roadster kit and the backs are the old AMT hollow Goodyears. The rear axle isn't under the car in these pics but it looks like it will have to be moved ahead a bit. I'll know better after I get the front dialed in.

I agree with Slotto on the paint. What color and products did you use?

It's Tamiya black spray TS-14 airbrushed on over Duplicolor charcoal grey primer.

OK, so I filed some off the top of the front springs. Dropped it down some but I may still see if I can tweak that crossmember a bit in the future,

As you can see in this pic, the rear axel is no where near where it needs to be to center the tires in the openings.

I cut the rear of the frame off at the drop and added some gussets. I may have to redo that to get the axel lower still but I'm going away for a few days so it'll have to wait until next week.

Been working on the frame and stance.

Here's how it's sitting now, about where I want it but the front could still go down a hair.

After digging through all the engines I could find, I decided to use the small block from an old AMT '57 Chevy kit. Not exactly sold on the intake yet but I'm gonna try a cross ram 2X4 bbl setup with a set of aluminum valve covers and say it's a '69 Z-28 302. ?

I might try getting the engine ahead a bit too.

Here's a mockup of the chassis with the engine sitting on it's mounts. I still have to add the front shock mounts before I paint it.

The basic chassis is done and painted black.

I did a little fabrication today. Made a simple recessed firewall to clear the engine. It's just roughed in right now, still need to clean up the edges before paint.

Rest assured those 6 carbs will turn up when your finished and your car is sitting on the shelf. ?

You build is inspiring. Love what you've done so far.

Cheers

Thanks I thought it might have been a candy root beer color.

Yeah, I was going to say the highlights make it look like Black Cherry Pearl.

Stop it, you're giving me ideas that I shouldn't have after the paint's finished. ?

That would be a good color for the '29 delivery I started though. ?

Well you know this one's been living rent-free in my head for a while now. Enjoy!  Street Rod magazine from June 1973.
