I just got back from Hobby Lobby. I purchased a Revell 1981 Z28 Camaro. Plastic tires, no chrome tree, and just the top of the motor

The best part is that the description on the side of the box says "opening hood with detailed V-8 engine".

They forgot to tell you that the detailed V-8 looks like a Buick nailhead.

You guys are right. This a snap kit. It looks like the CHIPS Chase Car. Revell put a snap kit into a full build box ! I looked at the box and instruction sheet Not even 1 reference to a snap kit. I did get my 40% off at Hobby Lobby but still, 40% off a snap kit would be a lot less money.

E-bay has one listed for $50.00+ $10.00 shipping and some for less. I would feel sorry for the person who bought a $60.00 snap kit

This is a bunch of XXXXXXXX from Revell. I am planning to send Revell a nasty E-Mail about this. Would this be false advertising and a Rip Off ?

What do you guys think?

I think you’d be best returning it to Hobby Lobby and going about your day - I’m sure Revell won’t be able to help you much

I like the car. A good paint job is all it takes to make it look good As far as E-Mailing Revell Sometimes complaining will get somewhere response or no response.

Curtis Mayfield sang {Fredys Dead} "If you don't try you gonna die".

Thanks

Ick! Plastic tires are usually found on military vehicle kits. When I first saw the kit box cover at HL, I was leery of what the contents may have be. No chrome on box cover Camaro wheels or anywhere.

I wonder if the pink ‘57 T-bird is a snap kit with no chrome sprue trees too.

It's a '56, I'd assume it's the old 1/24th Monogram full detail kit.  The only '57 Thunderbird snap kit in the RoG catalog I know of was a 1/32nd Revell..

Something like that. Wasn’t exactly sure if it was the ‘56 or not. But you’re correct.

Not all plastic tires are terrible.  Tread areas aren't the best due to mold design considerations, but sidewall detail is sometimes better than typical vinyl or rubber tires.

I saw the decal sheet for this Camaro kit the other day...no decals for tire lettering that I could see.  Decals for everything else, just nothing for the tires.

Did Revell issue two CHiPS Camaro kits?  I parted out one years ago, that I had bought at a junk store for near nothing.  I kept the decal sheet and wheels, offed the rest at the next show I set up at.  I remember it having rubber tires, and the body was more customized as I recall, so it wouldn't have been based on the snap kit being discussed here.

Buyer beware.

Sometimes you have to do a little research if you want to keep disappointments like this from happening.

Not that I condone how some of these companies occasionally have the tendency to mislead, but it's really on us to do the research to make sure we're getting what we think we're paying for.

The snap Camaro Z28 was issued with CHiPS licensing. Revell also issued a glue "Z28 Police Car" with (if I remember correctly) CHP decals. That one has rubber tires and is based on the Travolta Fever Firebird tooling so the body has the custom fender flares.

Now that I think of it, it was the more customized one.  Not connected to the TV show.

TV and movies sure got a lot of mileage out of those CHP Camaros, considering how few of them actually existed.  I remember an article in HOT ROD on them back in the day.

Plastic tyres can be painted to resemble rubber tyres, oftentimes with better results than vinyl offerings. Here's a couple of (lousy) photos of the 1/32 scale Whiplash Camaro F/C which I slapped together recently.
I spray painted the front and rear tyres with Tamiya Rubber, Black aerosol. I then sanded the 'treads' with a rough emery board, the black plastic becoming a dark grey (for white coloured plastic tyres, I brush Tamiya Panel Line Accents onto the treaded areas after a sandign with the rough emery board.

The way I see it, you can do one of two things: 1 Glue the hood shut and build it as a curbside. 2 Bash it with an AMT '70 Camaro. Sometimes, it's better to make lemonade from lemons. Or grab the tequila and salt. There's always a choice.
