Luc Janssens Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 The T-Bird is a big trip down memory lane; 2003 the Hobby Heaven Party at Dean Milano's toy and model kit museum in the same weekend as I-hobby. Remember Steve Goldman showing 2 build test shots of this kit and later on I learned from him, that certain engine bay parts didn't, get approved from Ford thus were omitted from the kit as released. Now I wonder if these parts were just blocked off from the tool or that the cavities were reworked. Cheers Luc

Gave mine away to a friend last spring. and a big FYI, for those who don't want the connie kit. The rear bumper from the Revell '53/'54 Chevys will fit perfectly and look great on it. rrb124@sbcglobal.net Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Maybe make a Gasser out of the T Bird.

I presume that is a '56 T-Bird, not the '57 that was just out? The Van will sell due to the Wild Decals. But, Full Size Vans are a sort of One & Done Build for most modelers, I suspect.

IIRC, wasn't the kit missing the carburetor? I wish AMT would modify this tooling and do a '55...much cleaner looking.
stavanzer Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Round2 has been on a bit of a Dry Spell for me, lately. But, I've got the New Ford Pickups to work on, the Boss Nova Wagon, the 79 Chevy Nova, and the '64 Dodge 330 still to purchase, and new stuff coming out from Round2. So it is not a bad time by any means to be building cars. After seeing all the Interest in '57 T-Birds over on the Build threads, I may even get one of those to see what I can do with it. I really like the Fastback top. So, just because, I'm not very interested in the latest new Kit Releases, doesn't mean that Round2 is somehow failing me. It just means that I have idiosyncratic tastes, and not every kit trips my trigger. 1
blubaja Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Branching out with the other Coca-Cola brands ? 1 1
Can-Con Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 I don't understand why there isn't more love for that Thunderbird kit. It was tooled up in the '90s when all those other hi detailed AMT kits were done line the '57 Chryslers, '66 Rivieras, '62 Thunderbird, etc. The engine might be a bit simplified but it also has all the features that people like in those kits like loads of separate parts including the frame and even a separate starter solenoid under the hood. Maybe people are under the impression that it's just an old rehash of the '57, which is older then I am. BUT, it doesn't say what scale the kit is. There also was a 1/16 '55. I didn't know what. I've only ever seen the '57. The car in the pic has a connie kit though so it must be the '56, I guess. 4 2
av405 Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 I would love for Round2 to update the Ford van to a 1983-1991 model. A new grill, removal of the FORD lettering on the front and rear, and maybe even some new wheels/hubcaps and voila!l Maybe one day... 1
1972coronet Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 I didn't realise that the '57 'bird was a (relatively) newer tooling. I'd be keen on that 1/16 scale Mustang... if its DLO and roof were fixed. Nifty that the AMT E-150 is coming around again. I need to grab a couple more of those rascals ! Now, if only the MPC E-150 of the same era were to be reissued...

I'm not up on the differences between the '55-'57 (let alone other generations) 'birds. Hard to believe that the '56 is now 25 years old ! Holy Toledo ! I still had hair back then !

Is the reverse true where the continental kit will fit the Chevy? 1

Richard Bartrop Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 The T-bird looks nice. If ever there was a golden age of AMT kits, that would be it. A '55 bumper would be a nice option, and some putty would take care of the vent.

Me too, 64 1/2 Mustang is my favorite and I used to own this kit but sold it on because of the issues you mentioned. I wanted the 57 Thunderbird kit when it was reissued but after reading how bad it is this 56 kit sounds a lot more promising.
Motor City Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 Another difference is the '55 Thunderbird has racing flag emblems above the grille and on the trunk lid. The '56 has bird emblems in the same locations. The '55 has never been reissued.

Don't know, never tried it as the '53 kit I have is the sedan delivers. [same chrome tree as sedan] and I don't think a connie kit would well on the delivery. ?
dbostream Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 What does the original box art look like for the 56 Thunderbird?
tim boyd Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 The AMT/Ertl '56 T-Bird is actually a really nice kit, except that the Y-Block engine proportions are really off. Substitute one of the y-blocks from any of the Revell '57 Ford 500/Del Rio kits and you're golden! TB 1
