This one is definitely not gonna be seen at Hobby Lobby ?

Never know.  They're carrying the '71 Dodge Demon, and previously sold the Supernatural '67 Impala with the Pentagram decal.

Though this might be more on the nose...

I really hope this one comes out! I picked up a bagged kit at a show last year, hopefully it will build up into something presentable. All I need is a new decal sheet.

Is this just gonna be a passenger car with a decal sheet? I would think the real car would at least have a roll bar in it and maybe some other things I can't think of without some research.

The thrill show cars didn’t have roll bars, they were pretty much stock.  Some of the earliest ones (late Forties) had the gas tank moved inside the trunk if they were used to do jumps, but that's about it.

This one is the MPC tool, which was converted to a Pro Stock. They would have to redo the rear wells and redo the chassis and interior etc. to bring it back to stock.

I'd like to get one of those Mustangs if it came a four banger. Love to build a mini-modified or a mini stocker.

The four from the AMT Pinto should drop in.  Both AMT and MPC put V6 engines in their annual kits, as '74 was the first year for those (and the lone year Ford didn't offer a V8 in a Mustang).  AMT put a V8 in as the optional engine, MPC would do likewise starting with their '76 kit.  But for a four, you'll have to go to the Pinto kits.

Appears to be the AMT kit, last reissued about 20 years ago.

Is this one on the market yet? I think I might need one of those.

Thank you for the heads up. I've got two AMT Pinto's in the stash right now.

Easy enough to crib a 4-cylinder from the recent Pinto kit, then swap the 2.8 into the "Flaming Pony" -

Does anyone know what year this kit represents?

I know they are all fairly similar but there are differences.

The last year of the AMT Mustang II annual was 1977, and the releases after that have always been branded at 1977s.

The only one that is really different is the '74.  Changes from '74 to '75 on the 1:1 cars include a slightly taller grille and header panel (to accommodate the V8 option), different hood, and relocation of the fuel filler higher up on the quarter panel.  The annual kits (AMT and MPC) have the differently shaped hood opening and relocated fuel filler.

In Mexico you could get the V8 302. Also came with two batteries under the hood.

Ok, what I know of the MPC Mustang II's:

1974 was a new tool

1974 the Firefighter and Dyno Don prostock released

1975, body retooled to a 75 (hood and header panel was different)

1976 the kit '75 was reboxed as a 76

1976 the Cobra II was released

1977 the previous kit was reboxed

1978 the King Cobra version was released

1978, 80, 83, 85 and 2005 the Pro Stock kits were released with different boxes.

ALL pro stock versions are 1974 bodies.

Now, an interesting observation from the AMT/Ertl Street Custom Mustang II was AMT in the box but boxart was an MPC. Suspension shown on the side panel was an MPC kit.

So is the MPC variant still around? Hope so

The MPC Dyno Don Mustang II was a '75.  When MPC did funny car or pro stock kits that shared the stock body, they did one per year, in between annual kits, to get more use out of the tooling.
