Jordan White Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 Anyone else here have a kit they absolutely want to build, but can’t seem to decide which way to build it? 4
JollySipper Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 I'll be ordering a Starliner from Model Roundup as soon as they're available............... I know I want to build it, just not sure exactly how. I do know this, I will have a clear plan in my head before I start it! If I start a kit without any kind of plan, I end up making mistakes and screwing things up......... 1
StevenGuthmiller Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 Nope, me neither. I never have a problem deciding whether I’ll build it factory stock, or factory stock. 😁 Steve 2 4
The Junkman Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 I've got a couple of Fujimi/Revell Porsche 917K kits. I've also got Studio27 and Fred Cady decals for them. Can I make up my mind, no. Gulf? Hippie scheme(s)? Kit decals for the 1970 winner? 1
Bills72sj Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 Nope, I usually have a plan shortly before I open the box. Sometimes plans get altered if I research an example online and I like it better. But that is still BEFORE I start to build. 1
1972coronet Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 The new AMT F-100 kits. I've got two each, but I can't decide on colours ; can't decide if I want to swap the kits' engines for either a Ford I-6 (stock-stockish ) or one of the VCG 'stock' V8s. AMT 1963 full detail Nova Wagon. I want for a mildly customised version, complete with a resin I-6 / 3-speed (or 4-speed) to replace the kit's nice-but-lacking engine. Those two stand out in me mind right off.

Fat Brian Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 I end up building things I'm not super attached to because the things I want to build I want them to be really good so I'm either waiting on the perfect part or trying to find someone to make the right decals or a dozen other things. So I end up building something just to build something while I plan for the things I really want to be working on. 2
Bucky Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 When I'm building factory stock, my biggest roadblock is deciding on color combinations. When I'm building a custom, on the other hand, it seems that sometimes everything is a roadblock. 2
johnyrotten Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 My collection is a mixed bag of both. Mind you I have only sought out 2-3 with an actual "build" in mind. A couple were picked up just to try some resin casting for various pieces, until I learned what I was looking for is available with 3d print. My current project is box stock with the exception of wheels/tires, kinda a day two build. Just built as clean and nice as i can get it. I'm less than a year back in the hobby, it's been a fun learning curve. 2
stitchdup Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 I like to customise everything i build. sometimes it might be just lowered on wheels and sometimes its change everything. it really depends on my mood at the time. i usually have a plan when i start but nothing fully defined because i never know what i'll find in my parts box and that can start another build too. i tend to lose interest in my more involved builds once most of the fab work is done so 'll chuck a basic kit on the bench for a quick build. in fact i think i'll do one today cos i'm in the mood for painting something with a brush and i've just printed this and it turned out pretty good files from digital surface on cults 6
Jordan White Posted November 26, 2024 Author Posted November 26, 2024 I generally have two ways I go about a build, I either buy a kit to make a specific build, or I buy a kit because I like the subject. The latter option is where I find I tend to go back and forth quite a bit on what I want to do, since I want to do the kit justice (especially if it's a rare or hard to find kit).
iamsuperdan Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 My issue isn't really how I want to build a certain kit, it's actually picking the kit. When I'm ready to start something new, my process is to go to the stash, and stare at it for a while. I scan the kits, thinking about what I'm in the mood to build. I'll grab one, open it, check it out, put it back. Scan some more, grab another kit, put it back. Then I realize an hour has gone by, and I still haven't picked anything, so I just go do something else. I repeat this until I finally grab something to start. I take it to the bench, open it up, get ready to go...and then bundle it back up, go back to the stash, put it away, grab something else, and then actually start on that. 🤪 1 1 2
Falcon Ranchero Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 I usually have a horrible time deciding how to build a kit; especially when said kit comes with custom extra bits, which leads me to changing something right before I build it, or during, or in the case of my 1966 Wildcat; like a year after I decided to change the full custom front end to stock. Even my latest build; the Street Rod '60 Impala; it was originally going to be stock and light blue with a white top, but if you've seen it it's totally not grandma's church transportation. That being said; not knowing exactly how to build a kit may be a relatively good thing for the mind as you're always wondering "how would it look like this" or "this colour would look real nice, or maybe this colour" and so you're visualizing multiple versions of the same car in your head. It's good to have options. And it's ok to change something after the fact.
jaymcminn Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 (edited) I recently finished a build of the Italeri Ferrari 250GT that absolutely fell into this category. It languished in the box for years because I couldn't decide between a racing or street car, what color combination, etc. I wanted to get it right because it's unlikely I'll get my grubby mitts on another one anytime soon! Finally I started getting into "preservation class" cars and everything clicked. I built it as a resurrected barn find "gentleman's racer" and couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I'd rather wait for inspiration to hit than build something out of some obligation to get it on the shelf in a timely manner. Edited November 27, 2024 by jaymcminn 7

Brudda Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 I have one now . Trying to figure out which version to build. Might even build the Viking blue 64 cars. My hardest part is going to make the ( Dan Gurney for president sticker)er decal. 1
