1973 Pontiac Grand Am

After some conversation with michelle on her experience with 3d printed,  I decided to see what 3d printed models were all about so I order a kit off of Ebay.

Truly excited when the kit came in.  The body looks great, the interior, dash, wheels/rims and engine were in great detail.

  The chassis just below a generic AMT chassis but the frt suspension did offer a one piece LS & RS  upper/ lower control arm with coil spring suspension piece however there was no steering linkage save for a one bar tie rod end connecting the spindles.  The rear axle assembly consisted of a one piece axle, lower training arms and coil springs.

Both Frt & rear suspension assembly required the use of a small diameter (plastic) rod to connector to chassis. 

You will have to prep (sand) most parts of the kit due to the printing ridges.  Light 400 grit sanding and primer,  additional problem areas/ridges will be exposed to correct. All in all not to bad for the prep work. 

Small delicate parts are just that...small and delicate.  Do separate  & just don't toss them in the box with everything else. They do break.  Crazy Glue works, Glue for stryrene doesn't. 

Pro's: Great subject matter, unexpected detail in some areas,  minimum prep with no flash, parts go together at the most seamless, comes with clear for windshields

Con's: some parts will warp ( did use hair dryer to correct), small parts that break may be had to find/reattach, parts that don't go together seamless are so close tolerance that they must be sanded to fit (time & patience is important here),  come with clear for windshield that you cut/trim to fit (time & patience), no instructions 

Verdict: I bought the 77 Pontiac Can Am to do next. Nothing was really hard on the assembly  of the kit.  I think more of a AMT Craftsman kit with an engine and definitely more detail in certain areas.  Not to pricey a kit considering....all you add is the time & patience.

Great looking car and nice review.  I've been thinking about getting the 69 Buick and 69 Monacco.  Haven't done it yet since they're a little on the pricey side for me right now.  I didn't want to take a chance.  I may break down and get the buick soon thanks to your review.

I like this. Something you don't see everyday! Can't beat 3D printing. I myself have not tried any of this printed parts stuff. If I was younger, I might take some interest in it. For now, there is enough builders using it that I just look at the work they do. Like you!

Great looking build and a similar looking color to Regatta Blue. I appreciate the detailed analysis of the build process. Haven't bought a 3D printed model yet but eventually will since it's there are a growing number of Colonnades available.
