Hi

Ive got a soft spot for building old weathered drag cars, so when i stumbled across this image I realised Id just found my next project!

Little did I realise at the time that no-one makes a 61 Starliner, so I figured I'd make my own.

so..taking the AMT 60 Starliner and the AMT 61 Galaxie kits

I decided a roof swap was in order

giving me a nice 61 Starliner to work with

Although the pic doesnt show wether the bonnet is off or on..I went with cutting it out..to show some more detail later. I havent decided to put in an engine or not.

The 61 Galaxie pan is rubbish, so I went with the 60 Starliner pan with a bit of cutting and sanding.

Not too bad a fit really.

I smoothed off the cast floor mats

and fitted the firewall.

Yeah , that's pretty cool . Always wanted a '61 Starliner and now I know how to do it !

That rusty drag car looks cool too !

the '61 Starliner rear window doesn't have the contour at the bottom that the '60 does. it goes in a smooth arc across the tulip panel.

.....Very true. l have the exact same project in progress. Unfortunately l can't find the glass from my '60 kit to cut & re-scribe the deck lid!! This has been a pretty straight forward roof swap with just a little sanding/reshaping. Yours is looking very good so far. Are you planning on also making a '61 boxtop? lt's much more work to add on to the deck lid of the '61, but l plan on trying. Watching with interest! Bart.

nice man, love the referance pic. im doing a very similiar project. i am using the same models but with the addition of a 2008 mustang 500 KR. Im removing the roof entirely and plan to put the mustang engine into the galaxie and graff the hood of the mustang onto the hood of one of the other 2 cars. How hard was it to fit the starliner pan into the galaxie?

......Hahaha!!! Me too! Did you use the back glass from the '61 to locate the new deck lid cut? Bart.

Loving this build! These with tons of little changes to create a model that doesn't exist are subtle yet creative. :)

Hi all, thanks for the positive comments, maybe I am heading in the right direction after all!!

Some more progress pics..

Ive smoothed the firewall to allow better detailing later,

P1040153_1024x768.jpg

P1040154_1024x768.jpg

Ive added a filler panel between the firewall and body to reduce an obvious gap

P1040155_1024x768.jpg

then I've built inner door panels as race cars don't have interiors..

Since I don't have any other pics to work from, Im taking a bit of artistic licence with the interior. :-)

thanks for looking.

Bit more progress

Gave the door panels a bit of depth by adding some styrene to replica the real ones.

P1040316_1024x768.jpg

P1040307_1024x768.jpg

P1040304_1024x768.jpg

I had to trim the screen down quite a bit to allow the dash to fit up snugly. I then added some small strips to hold the windscreen in place whilst i test fitted the dash and interior.

P1040298_1024x768.jpg

P1040299_1024x768.jpg

I then wanted to replicate the hanging front bumpaer as per my reference pic, but the grill and bumper were moulded as one piece. Nothing to do but split them

P1040310_1024x768.jpg

P1040311_1024x768.jpg

Ive smoothed the quages and opened up where a radio would have been, then fabricated a cover panel that will get painted Aluminium later.

cheers
