Ken McGuire Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I've just returned to the hobby and have accumulated a small pile of kits to build. As the little pile has grown I suddenly realized - and a question from the local hobby shop owner - what am I going to do with the finished builds. It's not that I have any empty shelves going looking for something to put on them.
Guest Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 (edited) I have two of these ..... http://commerce.idmi.net/ecommerce/catalog_detail.asp?CID=123&CI=405&PI=7814 I really like them and plan on buying a couple more. Edited November 1, 2012 by plowboy
Daddyfink Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Back in their boxes. I have no area to display them in, yet.
jaydar Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I have two of these ..... http://commerce.idmi...&CI=405&PI=7814 I really like them and plan on buying a couple more. If it fits a 1/24 diecast NASCAR car it should also accomadate a 1/12 bike. joe.
High octane Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I have two curio cabinets with glass shelves and a mirror backing to display my built models and my die-cast collection. They are nice enough to be in the family and living rooms of our house.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I keep them in individual display cases on the shelves and I rotate them in my display cabinet. I like to play with them by photographing them in different environments.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 This is a back drop diorama of an old burlesque theater and the model is built by Mr. Tommy May and it resides in the Lab-RAT-ory collection.
Foxer Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 An easy question for me since I've only completed one build in the past 10 years! They all sit in front of me on a shelf above the computer in plastic cases .. I hate dusting! But, I'm sure many down in the shop are ALMOST complete! ... really !
Guest Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 If it fits a 1/24 diecast NASCAR car it should also accomadate a 1/12 bike. joe. They also make cabinets for 1/18 scale which I'm going to buy for my pickup builds. The 1/24 scale cabinets won't accommodate lifted pickups or pickups with side view mirrors if they extend out very far. I see no reason why it wouldn't accommodate 1/12 bikes.
Rob Hall Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 (edited) Hmmm...novel idea, actually finishing builds. When I have finished builds, some of them went into a display case, otherwise back in the their box and into the closet and eventually to storage. That's why I always keep the boxes. martinfan5 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Serious answer, they go on the shelf to collect dust, so I am starting to say I build dust collectors now
Sixx Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 A few in the curio cabinet, most get sold...I need to start keeping them!! LOL!!
Ken McGuire Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Lol! Me too!! I also play smash-up derby with them, prior to blowing them up!! Great fun destroying models that I've spent hundreds of hrs on building.... Dan When I was a kid I built model battleships, then floated them in the bathtub where they were attacked by enemy planes. None survived! At the time, war movies were still the rage.
Junkman Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Günther and Gerhard pay me a visit and take them with them.
disabled modeler Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Many go into cases or boxes they came in once built....some will get rebuilt later on in the future when I need something to do. Some will stay in their cases for as long as I am around.
gtx6970 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I currently have one large display case. 5' tall by 4.5' wide with sliding glass doors. There are 6 or 7 glass shelves inside( case is full by the way ) Then I have a standup curiuo cabinet in the family room ( it matches the other wood TV stand and Shelves in the same room ) It's almost full . I've sold a few but ended up regretting that part,,,,,, so from now on all will stay with me. So I parring down on my interests / subject matter to build, Which will be all drag cars from the sixties to early seventies, with some factory stock stuff thrown in for good measure
crazyjim Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I have 4 of the Carney cases (each holds 21 builds), an old stereo cabinet, and for my builds that are fortunate enough to place in a show, I build individual cases that are displayed in a shelving unit.
slusher Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I have 2 corner sheves l have them displayed on in AMT clear cases and 3 clear water display cases on the wall and one curio.l Keep all l build...
ZTony8 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) I have a few builds in the entertainment center in my den,a few more in boxes in a couple of drawered plastic containers, and a few more in boxes on top of a spare desk in my basement.I have builds that used to be in my bedroom in the house where I grew up that are now in in 3 coolant boxes, wrapped in newspaper and plastic packed when I moved in 1987 to where I live now.As for my 1100 or so unbuilts I have no idea where they'll go.I don't plan on selling any of my builds-I don't build well enough that anyone has expressed an interest in any of them. curt raitz Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I only keep a few of the kits I build. give some to friends and family...sell the rest on eBay. built kits sell fairly well on ebay usually get the cost of the kit back and sometimes more, especially if a couple of bidders want it. I build models, just not into collecting them those that I do save are in dust proof boxes in the garage, occasionally "She Who Must Be Obeyed" likes one and it gets to go into the house!
