cobraman Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I believe I would have called the police as well. When the safety of kids is involved better to be safe.
vintagedragcrazy Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I would too I'll bet they got a beaten after that and that just not right hard to tell what could have happen to those kids. Vince
Danno Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 (edited) What Olskoolrodder described is child neglect and/or endangerment. Serious matters. Authorities should be / should have been involved. Edited June 26, 2015 by Danno
High octane Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I'll bet that there's a LOT of that child endangerment going on that many people don't see.
Olskoolrodder Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 It was a TOUGH choice....ultimately,I didn't,because I know what would have happened to the kids. Jade being a white blonde/blue eye'd little girl and her brother Jason (biological siblings, mind you, they ARE blood related) looking more pure bred African American, they would have been pulled apart/seperated imo. I did have pretty strong words with both parents earlier today when they came to thank me/apologise...everybody makes mistakes, but no one's kids need suffer from dumb mistakes like that. I don't think that will be a problem in the future (the drinking or the leaving the kids alone like that),but there's no doubt in their minds what I will do should I see it again. The thing too is,I know both of them (parents) enough to know that both love those kids, and neither one of them normally drinks or worse. They'd apparently had a major fight and lost their heads. Fortunately, nothing bad came of it,but next time, cops are coming. A lose-lose all the way around (last night and if there's a next time)
crazyjim Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I don't hesitate to call the sheriff. In fact, me & Marcia were in the pool and heard a loud pickup truck back up to the neighbor behind us. Heard some loud banging so I called the sheriff. One of the owners died a couple years ago and the wife is in an assited living place, so no one is living there. I didn't recognize the truck or the people so I dropped a dime on the sheriff. They're out looking for a loud, white Chevy pickup with an orange snowcone in the box and an aluminum ladder hanging out the back. Short heavy set woman and a 6' male with no shirt on. Probably about 50 years old.
Tom Geiger Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 (edited) Stephen you did the right thing. You took charge of the situation in the middle of the night, made the kids feel safe and made sure they were safe. Calling the cops then would have been a mistake as the kids would have been traumatized with a ride in a police car, and probably sitting in the police station all night while the cops tried to wake up some social worker to come get them. They didn't need that. And my advise would be that the authorities get summoned the next time. Everyone gets one benefit of the doubt, but strike two means it's going to happen again. I'm glad you spoke to the parents and they were good about it. That could've become a confrontation. And the little girl who was staying over, I hope her parents were advised of that situation. You did good and the parents will think twice knowing you are watching. Many years ago in our old house, our elderly neighbor had his daughter from hell and her 3 year old move in with him. The daughter was in her 40s, missing teeth and looked like she had been smoking and drinking for 20 years. She was seldom sober and always had a plastic mug of questionable ice tea. She had come on to every married guy in the neighborhood, but was so wrenched that I don't believe anyone complied! She had long lost her license for DWI and had no car so she was always there! The little girl was cute, had the manners of a cave person and pretty much free range roamed the neighborhood. Oh, and she had the mouth of a trucker! We went through a period where we thought our newspaper carrier was screwing up as we got the paper sporadically. The carrier lady was nearly in tears that she WAS delivering the paper and the newspaper was seriously on her case. I was up one morning and spotted the little urchin stealing my paper, watched her run home and hand it to the mother. The mother had taught her to steal news papers! One day a lady who lived a few doors down came screaming at my wife that she was going to call the authorities on us about our daughter. My wife quickly understood she meant this other kid, easily confused since we had two small blond daughters. We felt sorry for the poor old father. He was in his 70s and eventually sold his house to get rid of the daughter! Edited June 26, 2015 by Tom Geiger
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 The woman who leased the house I'm currently renovating (while I live in it) was a stripper, stayed out all night rather a lot, and had 3 young kids (by as many fathers, I'd expect). The "men" who hung out here were in and out of prison or jail, and probably just came around to trade her crack for services. The neighbors filled me in on all this as I was clearing the urine-and-feces soaked carpets out of the house, after she'd abandoned it, and the "men" in her life came back and stole all of the copper wiring out of the walls, and the copper plumbing from under it. The neighbors also said the kids were really beautiful (apparently the mother had been at one point), were as sweet as could be, but were always filthy with snot running down their faces. While cleaning, I also found multiple letters from the local elementary school advising this "mother" that one of her children was habitually absent. Interesting world we live in, right here in the good 'ol US.

Guest Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Bill, a rare occasion, but I am very much in agreement with you. Especially when children are involved.
mustang1989 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Interesting world we live in, right here in the good 'ol US. That's people for ya. There's not a whole lot that folks do that surprises me any more. Sometimes my wife and I will be watching the news and see something that happened where somebody did something either really sick or really stupid and she'll say something like, "Can you believe that somebody would do that?" . My response is simply, "Yup". I know this about us humans, we are capable of doing anything.....good or bad.

charlie8575 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I dropped the land line a long time ago. If you have a cell phone, why do you also need a land line? Makes no sense to me. We're on the wrong side of the hill, that's why. Also, remember there are a lot of places with no towers, and people keep a mobile phone handy for travel and nothing else. Personally, I'd be happy if I could get rid of the stupid thing and just have people call me at home. I miss the peace and quiet. The only reason I keep it is because of the problems it could cause if I didn't with some work and other things. Charlie Larkin
Agent G Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Nothing surprises me. Amen. We had a saying where I previously worked, "they never let you down". G
Guest Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I dropped the land line a long time ago. If you have a cell phone, why do you also need a land line? Makes no sense to me. I missed this. As mentioned Harry, some of us live in dead zones, with little signal, we keep a landline for that reason, and we use it to fax as well. Our landline costs a fraction of what the cell bill is. We cant count on getting a good signal. Aluminum siding doesnt help, but I dont even get a good signal outside, and we have cell towers within a couple of miles of us.
crazyjim Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I was just going out to cut the grass and got some rain. Now I have to wait for the grasss to dry before cutting. There's more clouds so maybe I won't be able to cut today at all. Darn it!
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 fax? Yes, fax. Even in the civilized electronic world, some things have to be faxed...or snail-mailed... where the recipient doesn't allow e-sigs, or needs a hard-copy of a document with an actual human signature on it. If it's time-critical and e-sig won't fly, you fax it.
