bbowser Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I try to paint my models in various colors and not get hung up on one color. I've been all over the color spectrum with my 50's cars, especially when doing 2 tones. When I google research pictures of cars I'll keep looking until I find a color that appeals to me on a particular car. Since lately I've done mostly factory stock builds I try to vary them staying within believable palettes. Other than NASCARs which are all over. I would do more in black but it's really hard to pull off a nice paint job in black. I will say that black is the color I use the most however, for interiors and undercarriages.
rmvw guy Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I count 39 various shades of red. Here's a link to all of my models, I forgot I had this. http://www.pinterest.com/rmvw/my-model-cars/
Chris White Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) I am a sucker for red, but I have every colour represented, not too much of a fan of pink, sorry ladies Edited March 12, 2014 by Chris White
Tom Geiger Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I try to vary my model colors. If I didn't watch it, I'd be building them all the same color blue or red! I literally refuse to use the same spray can on two models. A lot of my model colors are based on the actual color of the 1:1 that I'm replicating. I don't like black or white on a car, model or 1:1. And I try not to do black interiors since they just dark out in a model car. I try to do lighter browns, gray, red, blue etc so you can see the details of the interior.
Lunajammer Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Many years ago I found an awesome can of red automotive lacquer, might have been Duplicolor. It looked luscious and I used it on a bunch of models. So I'm trying to not use red for a while.
Tom Geiger Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Many years ago there was a guy at a model show who brought two models. One was red with a green interior. The other was green with a red interior. He displayed them side by side. Pretty darn obvious that he owned two cans of spray paint. Don't be that guy!

alangarber Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I try to use different colors. I have more blue but I'll google images to find something that stands out then use that color, or try to come close to what the truck came in when manufactured.
Aaronw Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I have a green bias, but that is largely to do with my favored subjects, forest service and park service vehicles. Hey at least I don't stick with one shade of green, I've got about 10 variations to keep things fresh.
Kit Basher Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I try not to use the same color twice, pretty easy since I have only completed five models so far.
tubbs Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 Definitely green for me,then blue. hey Greg, do you use automotive paints? where do you get your green paints from. everytime I look for a nice green color and I hit the local autozone for some duplicolor, they have very few greens and the ones they have are all dark. nothing like this... I may have to start shopping at Model Car World....

I do the same with the spray cans, but it seems I keep buying blues. I tend to lean towards black interiors. don't know if it's a color blind thing or just afraid on how it's going to look. have seen a few models with the blue interior/blue exterior thing and they look great. especially when executed well by the use of dullcoats, mat and textured finishes in the interior. one of these days......
jaydar Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 (edited) I paint factory colors so it tends to keep the colors spread out well. Joe. Edited March 13, 2014 by jaydar
cartpix Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Purple dominates my display cabinet. A Yahoo group, I belong to does a memorial build, & the color is purple, because that was the person's favorite color. Other than that, I've got a good mix of colors.
gtx6970 Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Because I build a lot of sixties drag cars , a lot of my stuff is white , some are all white with lettering, some are mostly white with off color accents several black cars folowwed by a few reds, yellows and blues and even a few green and even some gold cars. The least common in my case is probably orange( think I only have one )
robertw Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Shades of RED. I'm so prone to selecting red that I conscientiously try to do projects that would look better in any color but red. This even spills over into real life, I've driven nothing but red cars since 1988.
Mike Kucaba Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Let's see... Primer gray...Primer white.... Primer tan.. That's it! Primer!!
jaymcminn Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Since I tend to build mainly exotics, the challenge is to stay away from the "expected" colors... Rosso Corsa for Ferraris, silver for Porsches, etc. This makes me do more research to come up with cool and unusual colors for my models. As far as favorite colors goes, I'm partial to dark blue and bright green, such as the Tamiya green pearl on the Porsche 911 in my avatar pic.
Teddy J. Tannehill Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Looks like a lot of my cars are blue. I like hot colors orange, reds, yellow....Sometimes the color just comes to you while your building the car. My older brother had opinions about the color of cars...He said that there are exceptions to every rule...He felt that Green was not a good color for a "Race Car"....I pressed him on this, and found that it was opinion passed down from Dad....My brother and I agreed that there are a lot of really cool green cars....and maybe it was just a Marv Tannehill thing. Over the years many of my Pals said that their Dads told them that "Green Race Cars are Bad Luck"....Has Anybody else heard this?
