Harry P. Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Platform sharing is the norm at most automakers...been that way for decades. I think we all understand platform sharing. But taking a Cavalier and putting a "Cadillac" grille on it and then charging the morons thousands more and passing off a thinly-disguised Chevy econobox as a "Cadillac?" You have to give the evil masterminds in GM marketing credit... it took cojones to do that. But then again, never underestimate the American public. The public gets what it deserves.
Rob Hall Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 (edited) I think we all understand platform sharing. But taking a Cavalier and putting a "Cadillac" grille on it and then charging the morons thousands more? That's just plain cynical. And devilishly genius. The dopey public gets what it deserves. Yes, that was a particularly bad example of badge engineering. Problem is, most people don't know the difference between platform sharing and badge engineering. Lincoln did the same kind of thing in the late 70s...took the Granada/Monarch, gave it a new front end and called it the Versailles. Edited November 14, 2014 by Rob Hall
Harry P. Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Yes, that was a particularly bad example of badge engineering. Or an evil genius example of the best kind of badge engineering? Take an everyday econobox, add on a few tacky geegaws that cost you pennies, double the MSRP, sell it as a "luxury car" to a gullible public, and laugh all the way to the bank.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 You forgot one thing. The base car has to look a little bit good at first, so the Cav is out of the picture
deuces wild Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 (edited) Snow.... Makes me want to go back to Australia.. Edited November 14, 2014 by deuces wild
cobraman Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The re-badging of cars also fools a lot of people I think. For example my SIL has a Pontiac Vibe. When I mentioned to her it was a Toyota Matrix under the skin she did not believe it. I also know a guy who dislikes Ford but purchased a Mazda Navajo who didn't know it was the 2 door Explorer. I would bet this happens all the time. A lady where I used to work had a Jeep Liberty she hated. Traded it in on a Nitro. Same thing , no ?
Joe Handley Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Snow.... Makes me want to go back to Australia.. Can I come with? Same reason!
unclescott58 Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Can I come with? Same reason! Maybe we can get a group rate and go as a bunch. Scott
Agent G Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 (edited) I saw a cloud today................... and a beautiful white Jaguar XJ, about a 2011 model. Stunning car. It's still in the 70's here. G Edited November 14, 2014 by Agent G
chunkypeanutbutter Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 (edited) About six inches of snow fell today. Some melted already, was a darn mess on the road. Edited November 14, 2014 by chunkypeanutbutter
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 A late-model pink Lambo roadster, and a '64 4-door Comet.
deuces wild Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Can I come with? Same reason! Google Port Kembla beach pictures... You'll see why I want to go back.. Was there from '61-'71 and we lived less than a mile away from the "big pond"...
Tom Geiger Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 (edited) I know what Ray is saying about the regular general public not getting badge engineering.... back when my father in law was looking to buy his last Toyota Corolla sedan, I had a friend who was selling at a Chevy store who offered me a cost deal on a Geo Prizm, which was the very same car, coming off the same assembly line. My father in law paid probably $2000 more than my deal and bought a Corolla. Why? Because when he mentioned my Prism deal to the Toyota salesman, he told him that Geo Prisms were Corollas that failed Toyota's quality checks and had to be sold as Chevys. Liar! And why I dislike car salesmen. And my father in law was a gullible non-car guy. Edited November 15, 2014 by Tom Geiger
Crazy Ed Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Another Valley Oldie, a '49 Caddie. A bit Sunburnt but what I could see was straight.
hgbben Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Ferrari 458 Italia in black of course. Yellow calipers and ooooohhhhhhh does it sound soooo good
Mike Chernecki Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Last week saw a pearl white Ferrari F430 and a Porsche Carrera GT within 2 blocks of each other.
Rob Hall Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 (edited) Saw the black Aston Martin Vanquish again today, behind me at the drive thru of the new Dunkin Donuts...also saw an interesting customized orange mid '80s El Camino--had the Monte SS style nose cap, but with flush composite headlights and a slat grille w/ bowtie, perhaps early 90s Lumina parts..was well done. Also saw a very sharp bright blue '68-69 El Camino. Edited November 15, 2014 by Rob Hall
Joe Handley Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 A red with white stripe '67 GT500 on my way home from work tonight........as well as snow, at the same time!!!
Rob Hall Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Saw a very clean white '71 Torino 500 2dr ht at the grocery today... wasn't familiar that trim level, apparently a '71 only model.
The70judgeman Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Well, it was the middle of last week...a black Porsche Panamera. Really kind of weird looking with 4 doors and all.
Rodent Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Being in California, I see all kinds of weird stuff on the road almost every day, but I saw a '67 (?) MGB-GT yesterday. Had a black plate from the 67-68 era and looked like it may have been freshly on the road after spending some time in a barn.
Rodent Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 On the way home last night, Freeway Service Patrol was getting ready to change a flat left front tire on a fairly nice '66 Polara HT.
