The cut at the end goes to one about sword making, the Matchbox part was over.

More footage (rough cut, no sound) here: http://youtu.be/c5_xCiB2wG8

This might be the best footage I've seen of a pantograph in action. Our plastic model cars were (maybe still in some cases) done this way.

Wow, that's a lot of work just so I could beat the carp out of them in the sandbox! My older uncle and I had a ton of these that we played with back in the 60's, sadly none survived our treatment. :(

Same here. We abused those things big time. But my friend had a collection of Corgy and Dinky cars that were bigger... not sure of the scale, maybe 1/43? Anyway, we weren't allowed to mess with those!

My brother and I had about 200 matchbox cars and trucks, our grandmother used to buy us 2 ea every week when we went to visit. She paid 25 cents each! They came in the little cardboard boxes. We took really good care of them but unfortunately my mom gave them all away. :( Years later I found some of the ones I had at a toy show, some of them were selling for upwards of $30 ea. @-@

Very interesting to see that painting process with the bodies spinning back and forth!

I destroyed or lost a lot of Matchbox cars when I was little, but somehow I hung on to a few...

The Anglia and the Coca-Cola truck, both with gray wheels, are the oldest - had 'em since '62 or '63.

Very cool videos. Never owner a Matchbox until I was an adult. Tootsie Toys were cheaper, so that what most of kits in neighborhood played with. That or bigger Tonka trucks. Was 40 years old before I bought my first Hot Wheel. In the last 16 years I've made up for what I missed. Now I own hundreds of Hot Wheels and Matchbox vehicles. Includes some vintage ones, like a Lincoln sedan like they showed getting painted in the first posted video (and shown in Chris' picture above).

Cool collections guys! I add myself to the guy that destroyed some of those cars... :( I still have all of them displayed on a cardboard box, with Majorette, Hotwheels, Corgi... I also played a lot with Brumm, Rio, Polistil, Bburago and other 1/43 cars... I still have around 5000 cars, from 1/87 to 1/8. The nicer one are on display cases, the other are the one I played with my brother and are the one displayed in several cardboard boxes. :)

One of my favorite old Matchbox cars, a survivor from my youth. Note the Testors Lumpy Black roof job. Yea, back in the day I 'detailed' all my cars.

allthree-vi.jpg

Three of my Hot Wheel survivors. I've owned these since 1970 or so. The VWs were my racing team.

Matchbox cars were my first automotive love! I remember being five and we'd go shopping at the Wright Patterson Airbase Base Exchange. My father was a big photography fan, so we'd always go to the camera department and there was a display tower of Matchbox cars right on the counter! So every trip I carefully turn the case to look at all the cars and trucks. That was magic for me! And each trip I'd get to pick out one to take home! At one point, maybe 1970-1 I had the entire 1-72 current series. Yea, I was serious about Matchbox, and even bought ones I didn't like to complete that set!

I have thought about doing that! Those Hot Wheel VWs became my racing team because they dropped like rocks. Short and heavy!

big bucks? depends on what you mean.

unless there are some very rare desirable Matchbox that I don't know about, I cant think of any that fall into the "big bucks" category, but if you consider Dinky Toys (Matchbox's "older brother") or Corgi then there are many that fetch 100+$. fairly big bucks but not enough to retire on or anything. but with a box any of the early years Dinky will bring a bill or more. Corgi you have to be a bit more selective with but again early early examples with boxes, especially of the more rare special editions, can also bring in that range. of course this is for pristine examples with box and literature if it originally came with it. any tampering with the car, painting, replacing parts, "customizing" pretty much reduces its value to nothing.

even in not beat condition but without box and papers , and perhaps some chips in the paint etc, early Dinky Toys still bring 30$ or so and sometimes much more. the jaguar D Type, Lotus 11 (Corgi), MG Midget (TF) and other Dinky toys in not quite rough condition will bring closer to 50$ depending on who's buying.

I used to like to buy used original line Dinky toys that were beat up and then over-restore them. I still have a big basket of parts cars and particularly that car transporter with tractor that is partially shown in someones photos above, got a few of those that I was rebuilding. its still fun to tear one apart once in a while and paint it up. very high quality pieces too, made when the UK was still proud!

it just so happens that we are preparing to move house, so we were packing up my now 18 year old son's collection of small diecasts and organising them a bit:

small-car-collection-X3.jpg

Most of them are Matchbox or Hot Wheels, with a few "SIKU" brand, which can be identified by generally being slightly larger and more accurate scale models. (see the Veyron at the back right, for example). There are 270 in total, the product of 6-7 years collecting. Some of these are oldies from the charity shop (most of MY old collection is still with my parents for the grandchildren to play with...) These are somewhat organised -- if you put your mind an your magnifying specs to it, you should find vertical lines of different manufacturers. Ferrari, Lambo and Aston clearly out in front, though Mustangs and Corvettes make a good showing as well!

bestest,

M.
