I got to spend most the day with Captain Jack Sparrow and his wife harassing local festival goers with my evil pirate ways and bad pirate jokes. Arrr....

The above photo is from an earlier event. But it gives you a pretty good idea what we do.

My Telluride survived a part of it's intended purpose today, being played with by the 3 year old my sister babysits!

So...what pleased me today? A very thorough home inspection on a house my wife and I are planning to buy with a great report. NO major issues. Only a few minor things that were recommended to make the house better in the long run. Like insulating the attic better, also insulate the tops of the foundation where the house is built off of, replace a few boards, a post, and a step on the deck...easy stuff to do. Everything else looked great according to the inspector. Now we have to wait a couple/few more weeks to close and we get the keys! Then the floors can get refinished and some paint on the walls. Hopefully this will be the last move. OH YEAH, I get to build a dedicated hobby room too! :D

What pleased me today...... That's an easy one. Telling the idiot exactly what I thought of him via messages..... See "What Irked you today " .... To get the picture.

Three weeks ago today, my mother, who has been a healthy and very active person, collapsed on the bathroom floor in the middle of the night.

She couldn't get up, even with my father's help, and said that she couldn't move or feel her legs. My father called 911, and for the first time in their lives, the local all volunteer fire department showed up. The VFD was there within 2 or 3 minutes.

They rushed her to a hospital in Indianapolis where a Polish born female doctor asked about 8 million questions, and ran a battery of tests. Within what seemed to be twenty minutes, even though it was longer, this ER doctor came running down the hall, almost in a dead sprint, and said that a Life Line helicopter was ordered to take her to a hospital across the city.

Of course, we were shocked, to say the least. Life Line? Really? To a hospital across town???

Turns out that my mother had an aortic dissection, which is a fancy way of saying 'aortic aneurysm.'

I don't know if you all know this, but having an aortic aneurysm is not something you really want to face in your life. It ranks way above having stumped your toe, having the flu, and getting glue on a windshield, all at the same time.

After an emergency surgery, which lasted about 5 hours, and three weeks in the hospital, I am thrilled to report that my mother is back at home, using the same bathroom where she collapsed.

She still has a long road to recovery, and we are cautioned that life may not return to 100% normal again, but I am thankful that God spared my mother's life.

Roger that!! I has a aneurysm of the aorta in 2008 right here in AZ. I thought it was a really bad back spasm. Had my brother take me to the nearest ER after what seemed days And after a lot of pain & tests they came back and said I had a aneurysm of the aorta and it was thoracic and abdominal and was dissecting. This condition was too much for this hospital and I was carted off to another. It was too vast to operate so they just loaded me up with medication and I came thru so far. I had to get alot of CT scans for many years eventually tapering off.

I'm glad your Mom made it out okay. Time is of the essence with this disorder.

Be careful what you wish for.

We've been wishin' and hopin' for rain for months if not years. :(

Got it Sunday and today. :o At least 4" in a couple of hours this morning! :o

Our neighborhood is surrounded by water ~ Interstate 17 is flooded & closed (1/2 mile West); Carefree Highway is flooded & closed (3-4 miles North); flood control levee next to us overflowed; major canal 1/4 mile NE & E is at the banks. Three ways out of here; one closed by flooded washes and the other two are just passable.

There's three good things, though. We have power (thousands of people don't), we have no where we have to be or have to go), and, we're high and dry and not at risk!

Of course, it's supposed to rain again tonight . . .

Danno that storm system keeps getting stalled right over you. The northern edge gets to Kingman or Bullhead and just stops. We get massive cloud formations, high humidity and no rain. I keep trying to take some of that off your hands brother, but Mother Nature always liked you best.

Congrats Harry! I refinanced two years ago. Best thing to happen in this decade so far!

Good for you Harry. It's always great when overhead expenses can be trimmed. Hopefully you'll be able to bank some of those savings for a "rainy day fund".

I got one of those deals from my existing mortgage holder where I can refinance for no cost, no appraisal, no credit check, no nothing (because I'm an existing customer and already have an existing mortgage with them). I didn't even have to fill out any paperwork. All I had to do is sign a few forms that they FedExed to my house, and send them back in the prepaid return envelope. I "closed" in about five minutes and didn't spend one dime. My village even offers free document notarization to residents, so even that didn't cost me anything.

How could I pass up a deal like that? My new rate is low (because I have an excellent credit score), but not quite the "rock bottom" rate I might have found if I shopped around. But on the other hand, I paid no points, no appraisal fee, no origination fee, no fees, period.

Congrats Harry! Did they allow you to refi in place, that is not go for a new 30 year loan? I'd refi under your deal if they'd let me stay at the same point in the amortization than go back to start.

Nobody lets you refinance in place. Every refi is a new loan (whether 15, 20, 30 year or whatever you want). No way around that... no lender will let you refi an existing mortgage at the point it's at; it's always starting over again from square one, because letting you refi in place would benefit you, not the lender. So they don't allow that.

But... since my new monthly payment is $200 less than it was, I can always continue to pay my "old" monthly amount, and everything over and above my new monthly payment goes directly to pay down my principal. So in effect I can cut my new mortgage down by continuing to pay my old monthly payment and taking that chunk out of my principal every month... in effect creating a quicker payoff. Or if money is tight, I can just pay the new monthly amount. It's up to me, that's the nice thing. If I have the $$$ to make a larger monthly payment, the "extra" goes right towards the principal... but if money is tight that month, I only owe the new smaller monthly amount.

Mike,

I have to say that when I read your post, I was a little bit in shock. So much in shock that I really haven't posted here.

They say that aortic aneurysms can be hereditary, My mom has a sister with a minor AA and a brother who had a huge one!

Just last week, while walking into the hobby shop, I got a cramp in my back so bad that I thought I was going to pass out. I've had lots of back cramps, but this one...my goodness, I tell ya, it was bad. If I could have made it to the sidewalk, I would have laid down on it, but was too afraid to lay down on the blazing hot asphalt for fear that I couldn't stand up again. I almost told the wife to call the fire department, just so I could have a gurney to lay down on until it passed.

Now you have me worried...my mother had immense back pain too when she was taken to the ER.

Seems you have a decent strategy and I believe you are the type of person who will follow through. For me, there is only a half point spread between my current rate and what they're offering in the market right now. So even the mortgage folks I spoke with (who are usually eager to sell you anything) agreed it wasn't right for me. I had a mortgage calculator that calculated out how much sooner you paid off a mortgage if you added different amounts to your payment, which of course goes directly to the principal. This strategy can actually come out cheaper than a re-fi for a lot of folks
