JollySipper Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I am working on a model that I plan to paint black, and was thinking how awesome it would be to have some gunmetal foil for the trim...... What do you guys think? Would this be a good seller?
Harry P. Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Sounds good to me. I'd also like to see brass foil.
Jon Haigwood Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I had to have the hobby store order me some gold BMF for a project, It's been 3 weeks so far.
Snake45 Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 What exactly do you consider "gunmetal"? To me, gun metal is either a very dark, shiny black (bluing) or a flat medium-dark gray (Parkerizing). There have been many, many finishes applied to firearms, including various paints. "Gunmetal" isn't very descriptive.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 This Parkerized Colt 1911 is what I consider to be gunmetal, but y'know it can be shiny too, like a 'Cuda had gunmetal that was like this.

The70judgeman Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Not sure about "gunmetal", but I believe I've seen Black Chrome BMF. Not sure if you could burnish it out to look like gunmetal.
ffreak Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I have the black and it will not stick and seems thicker also. I haven't fooled with it in years after that mess.

Deathgoblin Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I've only had one success out of the black foil, using it for the side window frames on a Monogram Lamborghini Countach. It's too thick and the black coating comes off too easy. The gold works really well, though.
ffreak Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Yes the Ultra was a bust as far as i'm concerned also...I even had a bad batch of the regular stuff there for a while but they finally got some better quality pieces out there. Haven't had any problems in a few years.
Jon Haigwood Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 What about using chrome BMF and going over it with something like a black felt pen. Red chrome ?????
sjordan2 Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 What about using chrome BMF and going over it with something like a black felt pen. Red chrome ????? Maybe Harry can pipe in -- he occasionally uses black window tint spray to tone down chrome and brass plating, and might work on BMF chrome and matte aluminum. Worked very nicely to darken some red velvet carpeting I'm using.
Howard Cohen Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 One of the reasons for the coloured/coated BMF being difficult is that the added colour/coating, gold, black, brass, whatever, is applied on top of the natural aluminum foil. When you add a second coating, the foil, or any other product, becomes thicker and more difficult to use.You would be better off to experiment with adding the colour after you have applied the chrome foil to your model. I have used chrome BMF to replicate a brushed aluminum roof panel, like the 50s Cadillacs, by brushing it after applying it to the roof. It is slow but it works. Try any colour you want and see what happens
mr moto Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I just checked BMF's website (you can order direct BTW) and they still make the black foil and the ultra bright chrome. However, my results with the black foil have been about like everybody else says. On the other hand, it's not impossible to work with. Try it and see and if it can do what your project needs.
christian-w Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Me too. The black BMF hasn't that good result like the others (chrome / ultra bright chrome or gold). It feels sicker and it's not that "smooth"
cruz Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Alclad chrome would work pretty well if you don't mind the tedious task of masking.....
ffreak Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I've not had any problem with the gold. It's worked very well anytime i've used it.
Tom Geiger Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Black Sharpie over BMF can give a purple tint, rather than the black you are looking for. Testors makes "gunmetal" as part of their metalizers. It's very dark and I use it mainly on suspension parts to give different assemblies that are dark colors a slightly different appearance.
Foxer Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I've used Black BMF and it worked but is thicker and doesn't stick as much as the regular chrome. It has been on this Subie for maybe 15 years and is still sticking tight. But, it is black.. not anything like gunmetal.
Snake45 Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 But, it is black.. not anything like gunmetal. I can show you guns in any shade of black you want, from a deep, liquid gloss, to a nice satin eggshell, to a dead flat black.
