Reissue of Warren Tope's '73 Trans-Am Mustang

I saw these parts on Ebay a few weeks ago.

If I recall about 10 years ago I asked Norm of R&MCO if he would cast the 71-72 style bumper for the AMT and MPC kits and he did.

Whether he still has the molds is another question.

IMHO this generation deserves all new tooling, but if the numbers don't warrant the investment, I will be content with a retool of the faux Mpc '71 Mustang in the original configuration of the tool, meaning the '71 anual kit, with one suggestion for a upgrade, meaning chrome headlamp buckets with clear lenses, a pet peeve of mine

Dave, is correct about this kit being a real mixed bag. Mine will get built as a Two Seat rallye style car.

What is hardest to find are any photos, of the odd, apparently One-of-a-Kind Air Intake/Carb set up.

It looks like it was unique to this car, and while AMT faithfully reproduced it, trying to pin it down in detail is impossible for me, anyways.

I plan to use the kit, engine, with the Pie Plate air cleaner, that is in this kit as well.

Luc is exactly correct here.  The '71-'73 Mustang (for me, speciifically the '71-'72 as it is the most pure execution of the design theme) has been ignored in 1/1 and 1/25th scale WAY too long.  It is a unique generation of its own....and the Boss 351, 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air, and the late '71/'72 351 Cleveland Hi-Po derivatives were all extremely fast cars whose performance stats were largely ignored or misrepresented by the automotive media at the time.   It's truly a car whose time has come.  At the time it was designed (c. 1968-69), it was a logical extension of late 1960's design themes, and incorporated perhaps the most pure ("fastest") fastback roofline ever put on a volume production car.   Regrettably the world changed between design and intro, and the car did not sell well, one of the primary reasons it is discredited and largely ignored today.  

Several years back now I heard a very credible piece of info that one of the model manufacturers was well into a project with fresh tooling of the '71 Mustang.  This info did not come from a source inside the company, but from someone outside the company whose track record on this sort of topic is largely bulletproof.  But I have never heard anything further, either from inside or outside the supposed company involved.  Still...it would be a great topic for a full detail 1/25th scale kit - in at least three versions, a '71 429 CJ Ram Air Mach 1, a '71 Boss 351, and a '72 Mach 1 with the 351 Cleveland HO..  There are probably also some stock or super stock drag versions that would be worthy of a kit variant.  Of course, since we are (apparently now) dreaming here, a convertible spinoff version would be ultra cool, including the '72 "Sprint" (white/blue) mid-year special trim.

If a modern tool Mustang II hatchback and a '71-'73 Mustang (with interchangeable noses) were released... I'd seriously go broke. Not even kidding. 2 of my favorite generations of Mustangs... besides anything foxbody.. I can't live without owning at least 2 fox chassis'd cars at one time. If Revell did a 71-73 car the way they did the 70 Torino.. man that would be sweet.

A modern tool 71-72 has a number of options as Tim says. Just tool both hoods, scoop Mach1 and base model flat, so we can finally get a model of the REAL Elanor!!!

This summer I bought 2 sets of the small bumper/original grille from Missing Link. I think it was $15-20 each?

1971 is the last year of high performance cars in the USA. The 1972s are dreadful. So, the BOSS 351 and Mustang 429 are significant 1971 cars.

The 1971 Mach I was a star in the Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever.

I could agree with that. The engine bay piece is vacant in the recent AMT release... and the chassis is different too. Which is depressing when trying to build a nice Mustang II.

There was no WIP thread..... Pretty simple, flat styrene to fill the wheel well area of the frame in. Mounting holes for the stock springs are in the FF chassis. Spare tire well will need fabbed or omitted. Luckily, I had a fuel tank with it

That is the first issue of the AMT Mustang, the one which eventually became the Warren Tope race car.  AMT had the promo contract, not many promos were made but there were some.  None had dated license plates, I am not sure if they were produced as 1971 and 1972.

Found this picture of Tope’s 73 Mustang showing what I believe is a fiberglass hood with the “scoops” there only for looks and other body mods.  Obviously the rules for tire and fender width allowed changed over the years.

At least MPC did not tool THIS body up for the kit.
