Allison V-12 Powered Thunderbird reissued!

Recommended Posts

I have wanted one of those for a long time. there haven't been many of the MK kits that have been a MUST HAVE for me, but this sure is one( btw, i have bought several of the MK kits, but this is one I''ll be reserving at my LHS ahead of time).

Was there a real car this kit was based on? I could swear i had seen it somewhere. Thank you Model King!!!

The Model King has located another great old kit will be available again this fall. It's the Allison v-12 Powered Thunderbird funny car that people have been asking for years and it will come with the original box art and decals.

Certainly one of my Grails! THANKS!

Just a note about building this kit. I am currently restoring a glue bomb that cost me a lot more that the MK reissue will of course.

The chassis is very crude and limited in how much you can get it to sit lower as it looks goofy stock. Also when you build the motor leave off the air scoop as you can't get the body to sit down. I think I also narrowed the rear end to get the slicks inside the body.

Other than that it is pretty cool.

I redid the decals so that the Allison Thunderland is in black like the box art.

Now that the reissue is coming out I can do both versions. I may even try a funny car chassis with the Allison just for kicks.

An interesting kit. Just picked one up at a local hobby store a week or two ago. I love AMT's old Allison engine. I've built a couple over the years, but I have never really found a project I wanted to use it in. I also like big 1960's personal luxury cars, like Ford's Thunderbird. And though I'm not a big funny car fan, I like the pun "Allison Thunderland". So I had to buy the kit.

The Allison engine is beautiful. A work of art. And reading reviews by airplane guys, it's very well scaled and accurately done. The Thunderbird body is pretty typical of AMT's annuals of the time. Not bad. Not very accurate for a funny car. But I like it. The chassis and roll bar set up? Its obvious these were designed back in the day, quickly and simply. They lack detail and set the car up to sit way too high. It's the chassis and roll bar that are unrealistic and disappointing in this kit.

But still I like the kit. I plan on painting it Pearl White, using the Allison Thunderland decals, and displaying it on the back of AMT's recently reissued Ford LN 8000 Race Car Hauler. I'm glad AMT and Model King have reissued several of these old kits. Despite them not being up to the detail of modern kits, I love them. And still find them fun to build.

I find it interesting, despite my basic lack of interest in funny cars. I now have this and Monogram's last release of Tom Daniel's S'cool Bus. Two not very accurately designed funny cars in the real world. But two I like in concept.

They were going for about $100 unbuilt on ebay once. I picked up this rough glue bomb for about $50 and considered it a deal. Of course shortly after, it was reissued. I have a few of the reissues now and its a pretty decent, if outdated, kit. AMT did some weird funny cars back then.

I'm a huge fan of 69 Thunderbirds. My dad bought one brand new in 1969, and we had it into the 80s. I've bought 2 or 3 of this kit just for the body. As pointed out, the body is pretty much the annual kit body. It has almost all the stock trim except for the T-bird on the C-pillars and the custom grill/headlights/splash pan are included. Taillights are not included, but are available from Modelhaus for a couple of bucks a set. The kit has molded in taillights, but they are for the custom option on the stock kit. It has a separate hood.

I've been kitbashing the body from this kit with the ModelKing 71 Thunderbird to come up with a stock-ish 69. It's not the most accurate representation, but the 67-71 bodies were all the same beneath the skin. I need to try foil casting the C-pillar emblem from a 68 I have laying around. The 71 body will end up on the funny car chassis. Eventually.

Thanks to Mr. Asher for showing us one complete. Mine's not ever close to being done. I have the engine nearly finished and other minor subassembly work done. So I have really nothing to show as of yet. But, I'd like see other completed versions of this kit. If there are any out there. How about it guys? If you have one done, lets see it.

Mr. Adams, any chance of seeing your Toro with the Allison engine? Like I said in my first posting on this subject, I like the big 1960's (and1970's) personal luxury cars, like Ford's Thunderbird. So I also like the big personal luxury cars from GM. Grand Prixs (mainly pre-'69 in the case of Grand Prix), Rivieras, and Toronados. So I'd love to see a Toronado with an Allison. Also from the picture with posting, do you own a Corvair in real life? Another car I like.

And thanks Casey for picture of the real "Big Al" Allison powered dragster. Talk about a chop! No wonder the driver's head sticks out through the top. Don't know a lot about this car. But, I've seen pictures before. And still think its cool.
