Ah yes! I've gotten a few things over the years poorly packaged. The most recent one that stood out, was a very fragile pre-built N scale water tower sent in a large non-padded envelope. I still can't figure out what the seller was thinking on that one. The pre-built water towing came in pieces, that could not be easily fixed to get a good looking model again. And then the seller was a pain in the you know what, to get a refund from besides! Then there are others out there who over do it. Sealing the package in a way that makes me afraid that I may end up damaging the item just in taking it out. Too much tape and plastic peanuts can be a pain. But, I rather have that, than an item sent in a package that offers little to no protection at all.

AMT pre-1958 1/25 kits
unclescott58 replied to unclescott58's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Very cool! Boy you can really see the shine on Cadillac. Thanks for sharing the above photo. It's interesting to learn about the somewhat forgotten history of our hobby. -
I'm thinking the '63 Nova wagon, the '72 GMC Jimmy, and possibly the '72 Chevy Racer's Wedge, will all be seeing a home in my collection. The Wacky Races kits? I just don't know? Especially at $30.95 a piece. Ouch! Though, I too loved the cartoon, and had the hots for Penelope Pitstop, back in the day. But, $30.95 and 1/32 scale? I've never seen these kits in real life. Maybe after I see one, I'll be convinced?

First, I really like the Mustang above Snake. It looks great. Second, in today's mail I got something that my AMT Ford C-900 tilt-cab tractor has needed for years. AMT's Haulway Trailer, Five-Car Automobile Transporter. I've thinking these two would make a great combo since about 1972. I bought and built the Stevens International version of the C-900 about ten years ago. I've been waiting for the trailer ever since.

Jonathan, thank you. But, a local vendor I deal with regularly has indicated he's got one I can have for $23. Without shipping I should come out better than even Squadron's great price. But, I sure appreciate you letting me know about Squadron's deal on the kit. That is a very good price.

It was not a good seller? Try to pick one up now. It's impossible to find one at a reasonable price.

I've been wanting the Super 7 for a while now. I'm glad to see it coming back.

Quickie project...Trumpeter's first car kit??
unclescott58 replied to traditional's topic in Model Cars
Just ordered one these off of eBay tonight. I'm hoping mine turns half as nice yours did, Clifford. -
The Coke decals don't bother me one way or other. The basic kit is what sells me. At the same time I like the little extras, like the Coke vending machine in their latest '60 Ranchero kit. It has got me think about picking up another Ranchero just for that reason. I really don't need another '60 Ranchero. But, I really do like that old style Coke vending machine.

I'm not really all that happy to see that Round 2 is reissuing the the Esci Rabbit, rather than the old AMT version. The Esci Rabbit can not be built as any Rabbit ever offered here in the United States. It builds into a fine European spec Golf. But not as a US spec Rabbit. And Round 2 throwing in a set of US spec bumpers and Rabbit decals, does not make it into a "true" Rabbit still. The Esci kit represents a Golf GTI with round headlamps. We did not get a GTI version of the Golf/Rabbit until 1982 or '83. And by then the Rabbits built for this market had square headlamps. The old AMT kit also represented a round headlamp version of a Rabbit. Which was correct for early US spec Rabbits. But, the AMT kit did not represent their kit as a GTI version of the Rabbit. This has me leaning towards buying a Revell Golf GTI instead. It's at least closer to the Mk I Golf/Rabbits GTIs we actually got in this country. I'm sad that Round 2 was unable to reissue the original AMT kit. I don't need my Rabbit to be a GTI version. Don't get me wrong. I liked the Rabbit GTI. But, I liked the Rabbits with round headlamps better than square ones. But, if I'm forced to take a kit that can only be built as a GTI, I'll take one with correct square headlamps instead. So it looks like I'll be buying the Revell kit instead. Another point against the AMT/Esci "Rabbit". Where are the side marker lights that US spec Rabbits were required to have in this country? This kit does not represent a true Volkswagen Rabbit. Again, it's a fine European spec Golf. But it is not a Rabbit.

A while back, there was talk of Round 2 reissuing AMT's Volkswagen Rabbit kit. Has anybody heard anything more on this?

Cool photos. ?Sleeping outside like the one guy above, does not look fun to me. Interesting vehicle to pick for desert trip. -
A Charger VH. The one car where you can claim to have a Hemi and a Six-Pack in same car, and be right.

I think a bunch of us here have already mentioned that. If you go back and read the other posts here, you'll see that the bumper is not the only problem.

I'd love to have any MGB kit in 1/25 or 1/24 scale. I'm surprised that kits of these cars are very common from what I've seen.

Really?! A recent episode? -
A little over a week ago I posted my recent Kubelwagen build. Today I present you with a Kfz 120 K2 Schwimmwagen. Another Tamiya 1/35 kit of the amphibious version of the Volkswagen Kubelwagen. A neat little vehicle. Not only can the Schwimmwagen go in water, but unlike the Kubelwagen it also has 4 wheel drive. Though with no doors, one has climbing over the side to get in. And with the narrow windshield and no heater, I think I'd rather have had a Kubelwagen on the Russian front. By the way, it is fun to go on YouTube and watch them in use for recreation purposes today. They look like fun. And the fun reason is why I left the machine gun and it's front mount off of mine. I like the idea of using both the Kubelwagen and the Schwimmwagen for peaceful recreational pursuits.

I like what you had to say at the end, above Dan. Again, even though it didn't hold me as subscriber. I too am glad they have brought it back, and I hope that turns out to be a big success. As I've noted before, I work in a high school, and today's kids don't look at magazines. Much less read them. In paper form, or digital. There are many kids who love and know all about different comic book characters, but have never read a comic book. I'm not quite sure how that works. With they're over all reading habits, I don't see any magazine, much less CARtoons, having any real chance of lasting very long. There are too many other things holding they're attention now days. I hope I'm wrong. Back when I was a kid, in the 1960's and into the early 70's, our whole family lived on magazines. With us kids also consuming tons of comic books. Go on a trip? All we practically did was read comic books or Mad magazines in the back seat of the car. Our family subscribed to Life. Dad read Field and Stream and True. My mother, Better Homes and Gardens and others of that ilk. In the 70's, she loved the National Enquirer. My sisters, read things liked Tiger Beat and 16. I read just about anything on cars. Motor Trend, Hot Rod, Car and Driver, Road & Track, Car Life, Road Test, Car Models, and of course, CARtoons. I also got and liked Boys Life. But the favorite of both my dad and I was Mechanix Illustrated. We even swapped magazines with neighbors. Since we got Life, and they got Look, the two magazines would go from one house to another. I also remember kids in Junior High back in the day, stealing magazines from the school library. The latest issue of Hot Rod and others, rarely last very long there. Today, what is left of our high school library, I'm not sure they even carry any magazines anymore? I know they don't have sets of encyclopedias anymore. Another staple of my childhood reading. So good luck to the new CARtoons. I hope they are successful, and are around years from now. But, I'm not holding my breath. A funny side note. Just as I'm finishing this up, a friend calls, wondering what I'm doing for lunch? He and another friend are going to lunch and they want to see me and my new car. After agreeing and just before I hung up the phone, he tells me he also four Hemmings Motor News magazines to pass on to me. So, in my case, I'm still reading and swapping magazines all these years later.

What do you drive?
unclescott58 replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As of two days ago, I'm driving a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze LT. Bought a GM certified lease return with only 14,000 miles on it. Seems to have been driven little and well taken care of. And still under warranty. The old dependable Buick LeSabre still is running great. But, it's now 20 years old and starting to rust. If it wasn't for the rust, I really would not have considered looking for a newer car. I'm going to miss the old girl. But, at the same time I'm so amazed by all the new features the Cruze has, that I'm not sure I'll miss her for too long.
