Why it's good to build models
Mike replied to Mike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Absolutely right Ed. I don't have a problem either. My wife has always supported what I've been interested in and vice-versa. We each pretty much fell in to our own rolls in household chores without discussion, and we each do what the other hates, so it works well! LOL It was just nice to see that there was an article written by someone other than a builder who see's the benefits and positives of the hobby we all enjoy. -
This was posted over at a forum I admin on. My wife read it and emailed the woman with a big, 100% agree, AMEN and a few more encouraging words. Why Scale Modeling is a Great Hobby article

First off - HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. I hope 2009 brings about another great year of building for us all! Here's my class of 2008 in no particular order (doesn't seem like I've been back in to it for 5 years) -

Nice work. I really like the Tiny Chop.

Great work Shannon. Thanks again for getting me the pic of my monster truck at the show with the rest.

The 48 or 96 hour build is a no-frills build to BUILD. It's not to win an award or anything else, just basics. I've often used this type of build to experiment with new techniques or paint. I've busted out an 8 hour build in the past as well. It's a way to get off the stress (or whatever) from a detailed build and clear the mind for a "good" project as well for me. Other things like the 24 hours of Lemans build is fun. I plan on participating this year via the internet. A group from West Virginia have done it the last three years. You start and finish a race car/Lemans car in the 24 hours of the race.

Waiting for the other shoe to drop....
Mike replied to Harold's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow man. That's harsh. Hope you are able to find someplace better. -
Thanks for the kind words guys. It was a fun little project. Bill, there's a guy at work that works in Service that's got an old Seville like this generation he drives every day. If a person had a lot of cash, it would be a great thing to drive.

I know it's not a plastic model, but I'm awaiting the supplies and kit for my next project. This was a nice little time killer in between builds. The hardest part was getting the window piece cleared up and losing the scratches/buffing. Alclad II for the base/grille etc. The rest is Tamiya titanium gold and BMF trim. I really love the look of this car for some reason and wish it were available in 1/24 scale. Thanks for looking. Before - After -

That Olsonite Eagle is a superb example of craftsmanship. Hands down the best version of that car I've seen built.

Thank you for the kind words guys. I'm still slumpin'. I found my inspiration and should have the kit in a couple weeks along with the paint to get it done.

No Harry, that horse has been cleverly edited in over the copier/fax machine that says "paper jam"; "why does it say paper jam when there IS no paper jam??!"
-
Thank you.

We have a Hobbytown USA left here which is fantastic for modeling supplies etc. and the manager will order anything for us and not charge extra shipping. He's also really good about asking us what he should stock, what we want to see in the store etc. He's an R/C person (which is most of his business anyway) but he's nice enough to ask for help.

Yeah, that really sucks Bobby. I remember when McGiffin's called it quits here in town. I wanted to go, but couldn't/missed the auction when they sold everything off. GREAT people. The old man that ran the place was a builder and would talk to you no matter your age. I remember many a summer day pedaling my bike to that place to get paint/supplies/kits when I was a teen using my hard-earned lawn mowing or other money. When I got back in to it again 5 years ago, McGiffins was the first place I went and the man was still the same. I feel your pain. The internet offers a wide selection, but WILL NEVER offer the immediate need filled when you need glue, paint, or that "OH ######! I forgot I was out of..." time. Support your local hobby shop!!!

Add to the "daily life" effects, the undercoating that's sprayed on at the shops to protect the chassis from the elements. I remember seeing the guys at my dad's shop do this many years ago and it was all black/gunmetal grey in color when they were done. I would have to agree that it's pretty uniformly black/gray but there are a few rust spots that will appear due to road salt etc.

Rommel's Rod

Too right. Missed it. Oh well. I'll save some money then. -
Rommel's Rod

Too cool. I can see I'll spend some money on those Lola's. Snap or not, they seem to be a good subject for a simple diorama if the driver comes with them. I love the vintage race cars like that. Too bad I was a couple generations late. I also like some of the show rods like the Taxi and have been tempted to get a Rommel's Rod. Thanks for the heads up. -
GM on the critical list
Mike replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I couldn't agree more. After reading of the private jets flown to Washington to ask for a hand-out, and hearing of all the things they've cut to save money etc. I truly do not wish people out of jobs, but when "everything we can do" doesn't include a pay cut for the higher exectutives.... that's not "everything we can do". It is exactly as stated above - people trying to save their lifestyles. Another prime example of fiscal abuse (not trying to change the subject) - AIG who got a government "bail out" then had a HUGE party in Hawaii for their top executives to the tune of how much money???? WHERE's THE ACCOUNTABILITY FROM AIG, AND WHY ISN'T OUR GOVERNMENT TO SAYING GIVE US THAT MONEY BACK AFTER SOMETHING AS ABSURD AS THIS HAPPENS???????? -
Life and business isn't fair. Get used to it.

It's got a frowny face front end to counter Chevy's smiling Camaro.
