Second of my recent Edsel rebuilds. This one was overall ok, except for the hood/fenders being misshapen by tons of glue being used to attach the tub/windshield, and a previous skirt removal that left some script damage. Tires and correct wheel covers were needed as well. The fender gunsights were gone so I used the original mounts with homemade rings. Paint is Tamiya TS-26 Pure White and Tamiya TS-41 Coral Blue.

I finished a couple of Edsel's in the past month or so. This '58 started out as a fairly complete pre-built, lacking the hood ornament and stock wheel covers. I did need to remove and repair a metal side-pipe exhaust and the skirts. The side pipes were actually kind of creative for the day though. The skirts were not fun to remove however. These are really thick (probably the thickest I can think of) and tuck right up against the side cove lower trim piece. Add to that the fact the original builder used plenty of glue. I used my dremel on the passenger side skirt, which I've never had to resort to. I made the hood ornament from strip and tubing after filling the mounting hole. The windshield was one that required leaving in place rather than trying to remove. Never as good as being able to remove, but saves the frame. Lots to be happy about, while there were things I could have improved. Eventually I'll get the hang of getting better results with Alclad/Spaz Stix on bumpers, but I'm at least improving and learning each time I use them. Paint is Testor's Graphite Dust and a Folk Art acrylic mix of Cadmium Orange, Nutmeg, and Ivory.

Worth the troubles I'd say. Turned out nice!

Welcome Beau... this hobby is all about continually learning and improving. Lots of great folks here with lots of great advice and answers.

That explains them being on my '61 Dart rebuilder. Thanks Mark

Here's one of the four from a 61 Dart rebuilder. May have just added them from a Pontiac kit, but looking at the Johan instructions online it's hard to tell if these were included? It just has pics from the box to go by. Prolly not though.

#4 kind of look Ford-ish. At least what I'm looking at... is that a crest in the middle? #5 look like Pontiac 8-lug but I'm not sure they really are. I have a set that came with a 61 Johan Dart, but don't think they may have been stock?

58 Edsel Annual hood ornament

Sitting tight on this build for a bit while I continue a search for it, but will likely end up using the late issue ornament one way or another. I have some ideas of how to do it too. -
Great build Spence!

58 Edsel Annual hood ornament

Kind of what I thought I might end up doing. Thanks Roger -
Wrapping up a restore of a 58 Edsel convertible and found a problem with the hood ornament this project didn't have to begin with. All along I'd planned on using the hood ornament from the current Pacer HT kit, assuming it was the same as the annual. And maybe it is. However, the mounting slot on my convertible is much larger than the newer hood ornament would use. The new one is way smaller than the hole in my hood unfortunately. And, of course I'm done with painting and chroming so any modifications to the hood to accept the smaller ornament will be tougher than had I checked before paint. So.... would anyone know if the annual hood ornament mounting base is indeed larger than the newer HT release? If so, I'd set the car aside and add the ornament to the large list of pieces I'm looking for on various rebuilds. If they're the same then I need to somehow get started on making the new one work. Thanks

Both Chris. I think somewhere along the way I'd read that heavier coats wouldn't yield a shiny finish, but to rather shoot light coats from a distance. I won't say I laid down a "wet coat" on these but they were much heavier than I've done in the past. I'm happy with the results. A light polish after they're dry really helps too.

So I removed and re-did the bumper chrome by using gloss black enamel vs the lacquer I used first. While I still like using the enamel better than lacquer in this case as a base I'm not sure the problem originally wasn't just poor coverage on my part. Each time I use the Spaz Stix in the rattle can I learn more on how, and how much, to apply. I see a big difference in person, but I'm not sure you guys see as much. Lesson learned I guess. And that's all part of the fun of the hobby.
