Selling your builds?
pharoah replied to Dragfreak's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You'll notice on the Buick the quality of the photos. That has got to be a very narrow market. True, they are beautifully done, but how many guys on this forum would buy it? I'm just guessing, but I'd bet most of the buyers are serous (real) car collectors, doctors and the like. Another thing I've noticed about Ebay. models are kind of seasonal. Around September or so the total items for sale starts to climb. After the first of the year,it drops again. and around June it drops. How many of you build much in the summer? It might be a good time to buy kits, but not to sell. -
Selling your builds?

This topic hits close to home. I've sold a lot of my builds on Ebay. I use USPS too. My brother gave me some good advice. Pack it up as good as you can,and throw it down the stairs. Maybe a couple of times. No kidding. This is what's going to happen to it in shipping.Open it back up and glue what came off back on. put the model in a sealed plastic bag, like a ziplock. Some people wrap them in Saran Wrap first. You can use packing peanuts or crumpled newspapers. But leave some 'crumple' area between the model and the box.Don't put the model in the box and start adding stuuffing. Put some under it too.I always get insurance for somewhere near the value of the model. As far as pricing, you're not going to get rich. I've sold a lot of mine mostly to make room. I don't have a huge display area. Some have sold for what the kit cost in the first place, while some surpriwd me.I've noticed that the more 'offbeat' models usually sell for more.A weatherd car hauler or dump truck will sell for more than a nicely built 57 Corvette. And use a digital camera or a decent cell phone to take pictures! I don't know how many times I've seen what may be a nice model, but you can't really tell because it's out of focus,or partially in the dark,or half of it is cut off. There's a seller on Ebay- Wolfie's427 I thing is the name. Ha takes beautiful pictures of his builds. Most of them aren't even finished, but he still gets good prices for them. I hope this helps -
can you post pics of your Acrylic painted models? Thanks!
pharoah replied to foxbat426's topic in Model Cars
Here's one I did. Tamiya green out of the bottle. Thinned with rubbing alcohol. I still cleaned the airbrush with lacquer thinner to make sure it was clean. I use artist's acrylics (tube paints) for washes and interiors more and more. All you have to do is prime it first. You can even clearcoat them. -
Wow,I like that!

I can't believe they used recapped tires, but I guess it wasn't that uncommon then. Here's the aftermath.

I'm kind of curious as to what happened to all of these old models. I suppose they met the same fate as mine. I gave some away, threw some away, others were parted out for other builds, and then thrown away. Over 50 years worth. Ack! -
I almost forgot about this. This is a pencil drawing I did many years ago from a picture in R&C. You can see what it looked like before. It had the stock fenders on the back.

Kevin, was that taken before it was wrecked? It looks like an old picture. Here is one I saved for sevral years. Bob Metz, well known local bodyman (to put it mildly) and customizer ,Lived here in Shelbyville. He redid the bed back then. He added the fins, and I belive he was the one who painted it white.. It was kind of a gold before. You probably know the story of the accident not long after it was finished as it was being flat towed (!) to or from a show and ended up on it's side. It was lost for years, and was finally restored about 20 years ago. I played in a band with Bob's son, Dennis. This picture was taken when they brought the truck here to show it to Bob. I wish I could have seen it in person, but Dennis gave me this picture. It's marked Summer 1990 on the back.

I guess I didn't build enough AMT kits in the late 60's.

My guess is somewhere around 1965-66.

OK Sherman, set the wayback machine to 1962. Not the best pictures, but it's all I have from then. These are taken from the ancient 8mm home movies we had converted to DVD. The light blue Chevy pickup is the AMT 1961,with the trailer. My oldest brother built these. He could actually get a decent brush painted finish - or it at leatst looked good to me then. I was 10. The model T is a Lindberg,I think. The dark blue car with my grubby hand on it is a Renault Dauphine with the Hemi and slicks from the original AMT 32 Ford roadster. Onepicture shows a remote controlled car of some kind. Mercury? I don't remember it. Any oldtimers know what it is? -

Very nice! -
Yes,it amases me how many people still don't wear seat belts. A lot of times they're younger drivers , but NOT always. And on another note,I know it's not quite relevant to being a safe driver -is the people who run from the police when they try to pull the perps over. Sometimes for a minor infraction. It almost always ends up in a wreck, and sometimes innocent people get hurt. 99% of drivers today can't parallel park, let alone drive a car at 100 mph.

That white 'Buick' has been around that was on the HAMB a few years back. I like it too,but someone insisted it was a photoshop.

That might be it Dave. It's just taped together wituout the front bumper on. It might line up better after assembly.

LOL True!

DECANTING QUESTION - BIG 3 LACQUER-MAKERS
pharoah replied to fseva's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You might let the room gas-out if you do this indoors. Here's the way I do it. First I only decant what I'm going to need. I use dixie cups held in my had with a paper towel between the cup and my hand. I spray a little over what I need, put in a few drops of thinner, and dump it in the airbrush. Another thing - Why would you decant Tamiya spray paints unless you're mixing a special color? I have gotten great results straight from the can. Testor's...that's another story. Good luck!
