  1. Yes partly due to styling and mainly due the government mandated larger front bumper that I always thought was ugly. Not to beat a dead ponycar but the decals are weird in the 73 MPC kit (they are not for a Mach1) but actually the Nascar GrandAm decals are pretty close to the Wayne Andrews race car. The hood vents really annoy me because they are someone's imagination and never appeared on ANY 71-73 Mustang.
  2. HRM did one many years ago. Harold Bradford may still have a mold for one. I bought one before the R model came out from Monogram.
  3. This will be cool to follow. At some point I will build a Warren Tope T/A Mustang which would require some major body surgery like you have strarted on. Just do not put a Ford engine in it.?
  4. Yes I agree the grill is far from perfect and yes the headlight area is black except on a 73 non Mach1 and I detest seeing the 73 bumper on a 71-72 Mustang and of course a real Boss 351 did come the factory with a chrome front bumper. For the real 71-72's Mach1's you can only get a used (and pricey) rubber bumper so I have seen many Mach1's with a chome one - anohter thing that drives me nuts. There are many issues with the AMT and MPC versions that I have mentioned every time I build either version. The grilles from Kevin @ Missing Link are a big improvement. Since I plan to end up building twenty 71-73 Mustang as much as I would like every one to be perfect with replacement parts for every single one it's not too practical. If you are build just a few version then by all means there is a lot of improvements that can be made for both. I will never pay collector prices $50-$150 for either kit knowing that there are just a few parts that are different and knowing at least four different resin casters that will make copies of various parts so I have accumulated a pretty good supply of better or copies of original parts. I basically laid out all those parts for each build and the first four I did were done with mostly the original kit parts but as I chip away at the next dozen or so and I learn the quirks about building them and whether I will include a 302 or 351 or 429 engine and whether it will it be an automatic of four speed etc. my forthcoming builds will benefit from replacing more and more of the kit parts with resin parts or engines from other kits. Stay tuned.
  5. The Boss 351 has a correct grill but the wrong bumper (73) and it did NOT have a Boss 351 engine of course. So a grille and some decals and that was about it. The 007 kit may or may not have the turn signals below the bumper - we shall see. Anyone know the release date?
  6. If the palmer kit is the one Lindberg reissued then the wheels may be the old thing that is close to correct. There are aftermarket resin copies of the Ford dog dish hub caps and trim rings. In another post someone may have mentioned the 73 MPC kit has only one wheel of that type and it is pretty deep - maybe a scale 9 inches wide. The bottom line is to build something close to a stock red 71 Mach1 w/o ram air you will have to get parts from a variety of sources to come anywhere close. I am almost 100% sure all the ram air ones came with the black or silver (argent) paint whic leads me to believe the Bond car did not have the ram air setup. When the kit comes out I will "review" it and provide some suggestions of how to "fix" some of the obvious issues that have followed this mold for almost 50 years. Since I was never a historical modeler (i.e. I do not build planes and armor and ships) I do not strive for 100% accuracy as I mentioned before it is just very time consuming. For those that desire to do that I try to point out what I see is "incorrect" and provide some suggestions if a builder wants to make a change or seek out the parts to make a more accurate representation of one car at one moment in time. The pictures show an older AMT kit with exhaust mods and the MotorMax diecast which clearly cold use some SkakeFu detailing and removal of the American Graffitti tag and the incorrect Mach1 letters on the hood. I have yet to put in a engine in the AMT Mach1 as the movie car (not the stunt ones) would have had a 429 CJ with a C-6 which I can almost guaranteee with 99.007 % certainty will not be in the "new" kit release. I will buy the new kit (we all love nice box art) and will make sure I shake before opening but not stir it up after that.?
  7. Still a few things I want to add on this one but this gives you an idea of just what a few parts changes can do to turn an incorrect model into a less incorrect one. To fix or add every detail I would like too takes a lot of extra time. Just from these pictures I can see where I missed some paint on the gearbox.
  8. Yes - at this point I'm sure it is to late to expect too much. Rarely does the manaufactuer "fix" glaring errors afterwards but the Revell 67/68 Mustang and the MPC Mustang funny car come to mind.
  9. I expect not to get my hopes up. But what I would like to see is the following as a minimum for starters. Stock interior, side mirrors, correct grille and bumper for a 71-72 not the twice as big 73 bumper and maybe some better decals - not asking too much. My fantasy list would include underhood ram-air plenum and air cleaner, better front seats and door panels, an actual 351 Cleveland or 429 CJ or SCJ engine, dual exhaust with oval mufflers and not those Cherry bomb ones and chrome exhaust tips, Chrome Magnum 500 wheels, shock tower brace, acurate black Mach1 decals for the side and trunk (with the stripes) and the 429 and 351 ram air hood decals in silver plus some air cleaner decals. The Mach1 decals in silver would be icing on the cake but I have a better chance of a bond girl jumping out of a birthday cake at my house than seeing most of these things in the kit that is coming out. There are many other things on a wish list applicable to other versions of the 71-73 Mustang but we all know the aftermarket and some creativity are there to build an Eleanor, Boss, Sprint, etc.
  10. Can it be safely removed and switched. I will have to look at mine. Maybe a mixup at the factory.
  11. The box art always looks better than what is inside. The movie had the 302 powered stunt cars and the 429 CJ used in the non-alley way driving scenes. I'll write a review once it hits the shelves.
  12. It's very nice for the price. I bought one a few months ago. Not sure why Spark in that scale are so expensive. I would have bought an Exoto if they did a gulf car
  13. My oh my. My wallet once again will be a little lighter when they are available. ?
  14. Very cool. The dash looks like it has more guages than a 747 airplane.
  15. Agree. Top notch build. Many moons ago I did a 68 in the same color but it was a resin cast of an old AMT kit because the "newer" one was not out yet. I had to use Fred Cady decals.
  16. Nice job. Sometimes repainting a model is harder than starting from scratch.
  17. Very cool combination of an older and newer Mustang and well executed. Maybe this could be Eleanor's younger sister.?
  18. One thing I thought I would point out when I went to look at the body I had already painted. I realized the front bumper is the 71/72 style versus the larger 73 one. So basically only the front grille was replaced on the movie car. I thought I made a mistake but looking back at the pictures I guess I noticed that and had the bumper on hand. I still think my paint is too yellow so I will probably respray it before I go any further.
  19. Welcome. I hope the next build is easier than the troubles you had with the Eleanor you built. You did your homework and it showed which military modelers can relate to a lot. I like cars because except for race cars and factory stock there's a lot of room for creativity. Sometimes the model companies take care of that part by putting in an "incorrect" engine in the kit (e.g. a Boss 429 in the Testors 72/73 metal and plastiic kits). Enjoy the hobby and the best part is on the boards there are a lot of knowledgeable people on almost any vehicle topic or building tips and tricks. We all help each other out whether it's trading parts or telling people where you got something (resin parts, paint, etc,) or difficulties you had with a specific kit.
  20. Reminds me of a visit to the Simeone museum. I got close enough to the GT40's to place a model on the rear windows and take some pictures. Tried to do this with the Daytona Coupe another time and the guy told me toback off. While the Coupe is worth big bucks even if it got scratched nobody would notice. ?
  21. I like it - the reflectors that is. I hope you did not stay up until Midnight making them ?
  22. $5 - that is more like it. Of course Snake45 will probably order a lot more than that. ?
  23. Ouch - $15 with shipping and tax on Ebay. Might as well just buy the whole kit. ?
  24. Yes - this is what happens when molds are changed over the years. For my sprint I used some reflective material I bought. Just cut (straight) and glue in place. Use expoxy are regular model glue does hold hold that well. I was lazy and did not scribe the piece around the reflector though - as you mentioned it was not easy. Here is the engine compartment on anohter build I started. As you can see the vents unique to the 71-73s. Here's the Danbury Mint Boss 351. You would almost swear you were looking at the real car?
