I always thought they were a good value (cost wise ) and still are compared to the 65-70 Mustangs. Although they of course are a little larger than a 69/70 I have like them since the first one I bought in about 1977. I have done all sorts of road trips and open track events and drag racing and autocrossing in my current Mach1. Although it will not keep up with my 2003 Cobra, it still get looks anywhere I go and my kids love the sound even if it drives like an old car and squeaks and does not have air conditioning.

Nice work and it looks pretty detailed except of course for that minor detail Tamiya left out under the hood. -

Hobby Lobby re-opening
vamach1 replied to Mike999's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the info. I saw an old Airfix kit on Ebay but I assume the molds are 50+ years old. The Dragon kt seems pretty pricey so I hope it would be a better kit than the Airfix one. I read the review on the IPMS site which gave a lot of info. I did not realize the Command Module is also included so the price is not out of line as it seems there are a few things the reviewer points out that could be better but since I have not built a space kit in 50 years the Monogram kit is looking like a pretty good option. If nothing else it's one model that will look better with not having to dust very often. ? -
Hobby Lobby re-opening
vamach1 replied to Mike999's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The Hobby Lobby in Fair Lakes (Northern VA) re-opened so I checked it out on Saturday morning. Pretty good paint selection and lots and lots of retail priced kits of which I course I have multiple ones of the ones that interest me. Spent $20 and just glad they are open so I can make a mental not of what they have which is ten times better than Michael's. It thanked the cashier for them being back open and for her working. I will be so glad we things get back to normal for everyone. On another note I almost bought the Lunar Module and base kit since with a 40% off coupon it would only be about $18 which seems like a no brainer. The only concern I have is the size (1/48) and if anyone knows of a smaller scale kit that is pretty good please reply. Thanks -
Very good point. Over here we can watch the F-1 races on early Sunday mornings. I am not a diehard enough fan to watch a race very late into the night and almost morning. Of course there would be an 80% chance that Hamilton would win anyway.?

Keep up the backdrop pictures. Surely they cannot be any worse than the real race tracks used in the Ford v. Ferraro movie. ?. I would love to do a 1/43 diormara of the Shelby facility with all the GT40's, Cobra's and Mustangs being prepared for races. I get your point that someone might point out that a jack should be black and not red or something like that.

Oops - my bad. Sorry man. It is weird with no fans in the stands - that is for sure.

Simple answer is there's a huge variety for these year Mustangs and I have owned five real 71-73 Mustangs. So here's a long list but by all means not complete ( not including color variations) 1971: Boss 351, Mach1 (351), 007 Mach1, 429 CJ with ram air, plain sportsroof, Mexican version, Shelby Europa, Drag car (Minuteman) 1972: 351 HO Mach1, Mach1 351, sprint sportsroof, convertible, GrandAam racer and maybe a Grande 1973: Eleanor, Mach1, sportsroof, convertible, Japanese police car, coupe with a 302, Warren Tope racer

I posted a note on the Facebook page inquiring if anyone else could not log in and I figured there was some sort of outage. I found something else to do and congrats to Kevin Harvick on the win @ Atlanta.

Yes they do. I should get a 10% comission on Kevin Lutz's sales. ?

I found these in one of my Monogram kits. The top on is the kit part. The bottom is an old resin copy from 20 years ago. The 25 year old ad from R&Mof MD says Norm did sell one a long time ago perhaps an early HRM version. You can tell from the $2 catalog price it's a really old ad. Since I already had these parts I may have never actually bought one from Norm/Brad that I can remember.

I will contact Brad. I need some Kidney ben wheels from him for a Cobra.

Here is his business card. I found the Mach1 style grilles in my collection. The standard grille he makes is above the card. That grille would be for a Grande, etc. Also pictured are the Boss 351 grille from Kevin and one without a bumper (for a Mach1) since the kit bumper (If you have a correct one) would be body color.

Yes he does and thanks goodness for that along with Rayskits does many different decal sheets for various 71-73 Mustangs.

Hmmm very cool idea.

Yes partly due to styling and mainly due the government mandated larger front bumper that I always thought was ugly. Not to beat a dead ponycar but the decals are weird in the 73 MPC kit (they are not for a Mach1) but actually the Nascar GrandAm decals are pretty close to the Wayne Andrews race car. The hood vents really annoy me because they are someone's imagination and never appeared on ANY 71-73 Mustang.

HRM did one many years ago. Harold Bradford may still have a mold for one. I bought one before the R model came out from Monogram.

1970 Chaparral Camaro Trans-Am
vamach1 replied to Phildaupho's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
This will be cool to follow. At some point I will build a Warren Tope T/A Mustang which would require some major body surgery like you have strarted on. Just do not put a Ford engine in it.? -
Yes I agree the grill is far from perfect and yes the headlight area is black except on a 73 non Mach1 and I detest seeing the 73 bumper on a 71-72 Mustang and of course a real Boss 351 did come the factory with a chrome front bumper. For the real 71-72's Mach1's you can only get a used (and pricey) rubber bumper so I have seen many Mach1's with a chome one - anohter thing that drives me nuts. There are many issues with the AMT and MPC versions that I have mentioned every time I build either version. The grilles from Kevin @ Missing Link are a big improvement. Since I plan to end up building twenty 71-73 Mustang as much as I would like every one to be perfect with replacement parts for every single one it's not too practical. If you are build just a few version then by all means there is a lot of improvements that can be made for both. I will never pay collector prices $50-$150 for either kit knowing that there are just a few parts that are different and knowing at least four different resin casters that will make copies of various parts so I have accumulated a pretty good supply of better or copies of original parts. I basically laid out all those parts for each build and the first four I did were done with mostly the original kit parts but as I chip away at the next dozen or so and I learn the quirks about building them and whether I will include a 302 or 351 or 429 engine and whether it will it be an automatic of four speed etc. my forthcoming builds will benefit from replacing more and more of the kit parts with resin parts or engines from other kits. Stay tuned.

The Boss 351 has a correct grill but the wrong bumper (73) and it did NOT have a Boss 351 engine of course. So a grille and some decals and that was about it. The 007 kit may or may not have the turn signals below the bumper - we shall see. Anyone know the release date?

If the palmer kit is the one Lindberg reissued then the wheels may be the old thing that is close to correct. There are aftermarket resin copies of the Ford dog dish hub caps and trim rings. In another post someone may have mentioned the 73 MPC kit has only one wheel of that type and it is pretty deep - maybe a scale 9 inches wide. The bottom line is to build something close to a stock red 71 Mach1 w/o ram air you will have to get parts from a variety of sources to come anywhere close. I am almost 100% sure all the ram air ones came with the black or silver (argent) paint whic leads me to believe the Bond car did not have the ram air setup. When the kit comes out I will "review" it and provide some suggestions of how to "fix" some of the obvious issues that have followed this mold for almost 50 years. Since I was never a historical modeler (i.e. I do not build planes and armor and ships) I do not strive for 100% accuracy as I mentioned before it is just very time consuming. For those that desire to do that I try to point out what I see is "incorrect" and provide some suggestions if a builder wants to make a change or seek out the parts to make a more accurate representation of one car at one moment in time. The pictures show an older AMT kit with exhaust mods and the MotorMax diecast which clearly cold use some SkakeFu detailing and removal of the American Graffitti tag and the incorrect Mach1 letters on the hood. I have yet to put in a engine in the AMT Mach1 as the movie car (not the stunt ones) would have had a 429 CJ with a C-6 which I can almost guaranteee with 99.007 % certainty will not be in the "new" kit release. I will buy the new kit (we all love nice box art) and will make sure I shake before opening but not stir it up after that.?

Still a few things I want to add on this one but this gives you an idea of just what a few parts changes can do to turn an incorrect model into a less incorrect one. To fix or add every detail I would like too takes a lot of extra time. Just from these pictures I can see where I missed some paint on the gearbox.

Yes - at this point I'm sure it is to late to expect too much. Rarely does the manaufactuer "fix" glaring errors afterwards but the Revell 67/68 Mustang and the MPC Mustang funny car come to mind.
