  1. Bobby, Jackpot!!!!! I like your thought process on this!!!!! IMHO Works allot better than what is there :D
  2. Miles, Not that you really need to worry about delamination problems as it won't see the elements like 1:1 I'd give it a light tooth with a grey scuff pad and some comet GO EASY then recoat with a few coats of clear and finish how you normally would.
  3. JC, Thanks for the site info, spent some time there today. Great content. Peace Jimmy "RASS"
  4. Nick, Bummer!!!!! We have all been there!! Put the waders on and drag it to the pond
  5. Frank, As far as safety go's I'm in the same camp as ACE. I also wear latex gloves as your cuticles have a high rate of chemical absorption due to the skin being very thin in that area. I have a been 1:1 guy for some forty plus years. I have used all of their products and know much of the history of HOK very well. In 1981 I was a beta site tester for Jon and Dennis for their striping urethane product line when it was launched and it took a long time to perfect the product. The original product dried dead flat and had to be cleared (today you can apply it like One Shot or clear over it) the stuff had a tendency to separate or run if you got it just a little to wet with clear, in fact we found out that we had to put the first coat of clear on drier than a popcorn fart and progressively apply wetter coats to get it to work without any problems. enough! with that lets move on. HOK has been sold in small qualities for over 25 years and the original co who packaged it was Black Gold and they packaged only the Lacquers. I know there was some heart burn there as permission was not granted to repackage, however it was resolved. Black Gold Still sells HOK. Enter the second players Coast Air Brush Owner Dave Monning and Craig Fraiser of Air Syndicate they started putting packages together in the 90s with Jon's Blessings and currently do. I saw recently that I think TCB Global is selling HOK. There are things we do in the 1:1 world that I feel are not as critical for a model however I don't change my approach to prep and paint as I have all the materials. High end custom paint chemistry is a art form, I never cross mix product lines, Meaning: If I start with HOK I use their primers sealers thinners etc. Same approach as if I was using PPG. These paint systems are meant to be used as a system. If you cross product lines with a model and you have problems what's the worst that can happen? You throw it in the pond. You know what the cost of a redo of a $ 20,000 paint job? $ 20,000. you don't want to have to eat one of those. I personally would stay away from the pre thinned paints as not all paints spray the same, reduce your own paint. Example: One color may spray fine at 1 to 1 ( one part paint, one part reducer) another color may be happiest at say 1.5 to 1 or any combination in between. There are other factors with regards to reduction but those really apply to the 1:1 world. Any Kandy can easily be pushed through a .3 & .5 Kandy paint for the most part is clear and toner when reduced it's pretty thin. When you start getting into mediums such as metallic"s and pearls you should start going with larger orifices. Experimentation, practice, test panels and over all best practices rule!!!!! Other than paying attention to recommended reduction Air brushing becomes a personal thing learned through trial and error. In the booth I like to bring the color on slow and easy. On a complete I can easily spend 8 hours in the booth. When I airbrush I tend to work with a lower air pressure than most and a thinner mixture. It works for me. Now the test for you is to find a baseline that works for you and adjust accordingly. Ask any Professional Painter. Murphy's Law Is Always Lurking In the Corner I hope this helps Frank! May the painting gods shine on you!!! Peace, Jimmy "RASS"
  6. Petetrucker07, Reread my original posts and try to comprehend the message. I have not made one personal attack of trucks, truckers or the people who build them. I just don't have a interest in the topic, It's like me liking broccoli and you don't, does that make me a jag wad. The tone of your response to my opinion was very classy. Thank You! FYI I have one of the best lives a man could ask for I am blessed. You and I just have a difference of opinion, it doesn't make either of us right or wrong. 10 4 Good Buddy John Cole, I like it Vince, I did mention the fact that a forum could easily get over populated
  7. I love the debate, and respect the opinions of all who have responded. As for those who think I'm whining trust me I'm not!!!! Simply trying to start some constructive debate as to who gets billing and who doesn't. I have no power over the powers that make the decisions of the format of the magazine. I was told the reason trucks get equal billing is that so many of our members build trucks. I'm not a actuary but the numbers of Topics/Replies in the truck section vs Topics/Replies in the Car section don't even come close in the ratios department IMO they don't add up (I must have been absent the day they taught the fuzzy math :D) Speaking about bandwidth the model parts trivia now that's a winner, Risk/Reward Seems to me I am getting some back door personal attacks. Not ONCE did I slam people who build trucks!!!!! I'm not complaining/whining about the sections I don't care for as I clearly stated I don't visit the areas as I have no interest. If you want to attack me PM me, I have big shoulders. The post was titled Something To Ponder and meant to be constructive. I'm merely trying to wrap my brain around the equal billing. I know from a management perspective you can't cater to every genre or whittle it down to sections like wheels, tires, carbs YADA YADA Ray makes a great point about learning different techniques!!!! I get Fine Scale Modeler and they have little in the way of vehicles (unless it's a WWW II tank) they mostly cater to the airplane crowd (a subject I enjoy but don't build them) I get the magazine for realistic detail these modelers perform. Looks like I'm going to have a open mind and check out the truck section (ouch) Art! Great quote!!! However I don't eat meat due to medical reasons, But A steak sounds really good!!! I may have to cheat soon!!
  8. Harry, That was a easy way out!!! If they are so welcome give them a platform!!!! :D
  9. What about the members who like the genres I mentioned. I looking forward to the truck issue like a root canal!!!!! I guess you didn't fully read or understand my post!!!! Second line "never visited any of them once" So I do subscribe to your very simple solution
  10. Here at the Western World. One of the best songs ever written, played and produced about the oldest profession in the world. Put me down for Deacon Blues as my #1. I really don't recall a S.D song that I don't like! Their lyrics captivate the essence of life's experiences
  11. I love this site the magazine and generally respect all who contribute. The title of the Magazine is Model Cars Magazine and the forum has 9 areas of topics that pertain to trucks!!!!! (never visited any of them once) the same as cars. Maybe the Magazine should be retitled Model Cars/Trucks Magazine. I know there is the other categories section. What about open wheel cars? F1, Indy, F-5000, Dirt, Lets not forget their cousins Can Am, Trans Am, Proto Types and the like. As history continually reminds us open wheel racing at the Indianapolis motor speedway started it's rein in 1911, I could go on and on about the history of the types of cars listed above but then I would open a can of worms bigger than the one I most likely started here. I know their are sites devoted to these forms of cars as I belong to those sites, However why can't the best modeling Magazine and Forum devote a section to this genre of CARS. I have nothing against trucks as I own one myself! but have no interest in building one in any scale other than 1:1. I just don't understand the equal billing they get in a Magazine with the title Model Cars Magazine. Respectfully Submitted, James W. Rasmussen
  12. Jolly, Always a huge fan of the Dan. When I was Married in May of 1978 Aja (the whole LP) was huge!! IMO not a bad cut on that one. My wife and I took just about all our wedding $$$$ and bought a state of the art DC Sansui system with huge Synergistic towers, at that time we spent like $2,200.00 that system, that was big money back then, but that thing would shake the walls, windows and neighborhood. The first time I heard Do It Again in 72 I was hooked Peace Jimmy "RASS"
  13. #2) Black Cow / Aja / Steely Dan
  14. To the boys in the band!!! I'mmmmm Back and ready to jamm! Actually I would have been back weeks ago however I purchased a new laptop (only had a desktop before other than a LT from 94 with 3.1 on it) a few days before a complete knee replacement on March 10, I figured it would give me the opportunity to bone up on my P.C. skills and contribute to the site while I have been laid up, when I went to sign in the site didn't recognize my information ( most likely due to me changing my email address and never up dating my information on the site) Bottom line I was locked out and had no way of communicating with the administrators. Finally through one of our brothers 10 Thumbs (Thanks Michael you are a true friend) I was able to get back on and plan to contribute when I can. I had a bunch of material scratched down that I was going to post, I'll have to dig that stuff up and get crack'in. I hope all is well with everyone. Let the Music Play!!! Peace Jimmy "RASS"
  15. Steve, I too remember the days of heating Dupont Dulux enamel on a hot plate. I would say heating a spray bomb helps with paint flow and presure for the reasons Bill mentioned in his post. I see no advantage to heating any type of paint that is going to be airbrushed. Air pressure and paint reduction are the variables (technique) that should be worked on to get that ultra fine finish!
  16. Great Job John!!!! I love the deep dish chrome reverse wheels!!!! You don't see that to often, Nice touch!!!!
  17. Steven and CrispBcritter, You two get gold stars!!! Peace brothers Talk soon Jimmy "RASS"

Jolly, Thanks for starting this awesome thread... I really enjoy the banter with all!!! Much respect!!!! Snake, Try to stay out of trouble while I'm gone I have another theme. 21. I'm in with Pete!!!! Ahhso, I hope I spelled that right
  22. Brian, Let me preface this response that I am not a fan of anything Tamiya makes other than models. Being one who makes much of my living swinging a brush (see profile) I would say that Dales suggestion hits pretty close to home. In all the responses their are no mention of brushes, brushes are as important (if not more so) than paint viscosity. I have found that most modeling brushes are stumps. Try using some good artist brushes Taklon, Golden Taklon, or any good brush rated for acrylics. Another process that will help your brushing is proper loading and paletting of the brush, try this procedure and I think you will find your brushing results much better. This procedure can be used for any medium of paint with great results Loading and Paletting a brush: 1) Moisten the brush with the thinner you will be using. 2) Dip your brush into the paint and work the paint into the brush by paletting, Meaning: Dip brush into paint. On a separate piece of plastic, shinny magazine page, tin or a artist palette, work your paint into the brush by moving the brush back and forth (or to and fro) with a lite touch until the brush is fully loaded to the ferrule, you may have to dip and palette several times until the brush is fully loaded, you may also have to dip into the thinner and work the brush on the palette to get the paint consistency you want ( I prefer a creamy consistency) Paint consistency (or viscosity) plays a large roll in application, for brushing large areas a thicker consistency would be preferred, for small details a more ink like consistency would be preferred. If you find you have overloaded the brush, simply remove the excess by stroking the brush off to the side of the palette with no paint. It doesn't take much time to master paletting and the results will speak volumes. I hope this helps!!!!! Peace, Jimmy "RASS"
