A convertible up-top would be a GREAT idea!
-
I'm sorry I forgot to mention in my post, "Yes, I know that everything I own, have, or eat, or ever will, was bought by a truck," because I knew you would. Except for older rod types and El Caminos and such, I really have little interest in modeling them, though. Look at the bright side of this: I won't be bidding against you on eBay for rare old ones. (Reminds me of a great old Andrew Dice Clay joke that's far too filthy and politically incorrect to even think of posting here.) And remember, this IS the CAR Kit News & Reviews section of the Model CARS Magazine forum. I don't come down to the Truck section whining about the inaccuracies of the Revell '67 Camaro, do I? As to "broadening my modeling horizons," I've probably built more model airplanes than anyone else on this board over the last 60 or so years, and I can hold my own with armored fighting vehicles, too, when the mood strikes me, which it doesn't that often. So how 'bout a break, okay? Trucks is important. We all get it.

My Dad, Chocolate Ice Cream, and New Kits

I thought you were going to chime in with the Noo Yawk version of the Serenity Prayer: "...and the wisdom to dispose of the bodies where they will NEVER be found." -

Best built-right-from-the-box kits?
Snake45 replied to Jantrix's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Very true, but I was responding to a post personally challenging me to build a Tamiya kit just because it's a Tamiya. I declined the challenge. I have no quarrel with you or anyone else who says Tamiya kits are great builds. I have no doubt they are. They're just not for me (at this time). -
Well, I don't know anything about trucks. Of the two cars shown, I think the Impala was always Revell, never Monogram, and the Camaro is 1/24, not 1/25. I still can't think of any Monogram, 1/25, car snapper kits.

My Dad, Chocolate Ice Cream, and New Kits

Some of us here might recognize this as, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." The pessimist says the glass is half empty. The optimist says the glass is half full. The realist says the glass is just too darn big. -
They've been doing that on airplanes since WWII or before.

I'm trying without success to think of what kits you're talking about here. Can you enlighten me/us?
-
I think I paid around $65 for this one almost complete and never built (it's missing the superchargers) about 10 years ago. I don't have the heart to build it, but I did later get a very nice resin repro that WILL get built. Maybe soon!

A new kit announcement here brought the usual (and entirely expected) comments, which reminded me of one of my Late Great Dad's best sayings: "If you stand on the street corner giving away--not selling, but giving away--chocolate ice cream, someone will come up and demand--not politely ask for, but demand--strawberry." --Snake's Dad Feel free to quote him, with attribution.

Oh you know I will! It's dark blue, has big but not ridiculous wheels/tires, and side exhausts molded into the body. Should look okay on the shelf next to this Maisto '69 Firebird I'm in the process of wrapping up (hopefully today).

I've seen them on eBay, though there's not one at the moment.

Bought the Jada '71 GTO at Walmart. It looked JUST marginally good enough to follow me home. We'll see if I can wrestle it to the ground and make it my you-know-what.

No, no chrome in the MCW '65 4-4-2, BUT it is WAY nicer than the old R&R resin of years ago. I had one and swapped it off several years ago. I knew my skills weren't up to making a model out of it that I'd have been proud to display.

Well THAT's different! I like the color and you got a pretty good finish on it. To be honest, though, I don't the roll cage is doing it any favors. Points awarded though for painting the wheels black. That works here! Model on!

You, my friend, have just won the Score of the Month award, and you're in the running for Score of the Year, too. Well done! I use a fair amount of isopropyl alcohol in my modeling. Was down to my last bottle. I expected Walmart to be sold out, per recent Corona virus news stories, but they had a lot on the shelf, "Limit 2 per customer." I bought two, which should last me the better part of a year. Also got a Jada diecast '71 GTO at Walmart, which doesn't look as cartoony as most of their stuff. Looking forward to wrestling it to the ground with some master Snake-Fu.

Best built-right-from-the-box kits?
Snake45 replied to Jantrix's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If Tamiya has a kit of something I'm marginally interested in, at a price competitive with Round 2/Revell US, I'll be happy to give one a try. I'm not interested in laying out Big Cubic Dollars for a model of something I'm not interested in, just for the building experience, sorry. Not my idea of "fun." I have FAR too many projects that I AM interested in backed up. And already paid for, too. I DO have a couple Tamiya model airplanes in the stash, though (F-51D and F4U-2 Corsair), that I'm looking forward to building sometime. They both have excellent reputations. I've built plenty of other Mustang and Corsair models so I'll easily be able to compare them. -
Best built-right-from-the-box kits?

It's very nice out of the box, agreed, but I found final assembly difficult in the two I built. Doesn't mean I won't build more (I have on one the bench right now, in fact), but it does somewhat sour the OOB experience. -
Run your own test and see. Meanwhile, you can make your own liquid mask with Elmer's glue, hot water, and a drop of dish soap (and food coloring if you wish). This works better than any commercial liquid mask I've ever tried.

Yes, the Icon name is on the bottom of it, along with Racing Champions, but I didn't realize that was the maker. Thanks!
-
Very nice! I can really see your improvements. Brown Belt in Snake-Fu awarded! Well done and model on!
-
I remember that, but just assumed that it would be a much older "street rod" type model. You kept the lid on real good, old friend! You can get a resin '65 4-4-2 now from MCW. I bought one last year and am very pleased with the quality, and the price was quite reasonable. I should try to get that thing built this year.

I don't think there's a great deal of difference between them. Pick your favorite body style, or whichever one you run across first, or cheapest. Personally, I'm partial to the Skylark, Chevelle, and Impala, but that's just me.

Best built-right-from-the-box kits?

I'll buy and build one as soon as they offer some classic American '60s-'70s muscle. And there's plenty of unkitted subject matter on the table for them.
