Interior painting
Snake45 replied to porschercr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll use Testor/Model Master, Walmart, Krylon, Rustoleum, acrylic craft paints--whoever has the color I want/need. I don't play favorites here; for interiors, I'm a real paint slut. -
This one’s for Tim Boyd, Mark B, George B, Tom G, and all you other OG modelers who date back to the mid ‘60s. Couple weeks ago I bought, on ePay, two models—coincidentally, both Mustangs—that were featured in Car Model magazine in the ‘60s: Paul Sable’s Henry the 8th ’65 Mustang A/FX, and Phil Jensen’s kitbashed/scratchbuilt Malco Gasser ’67 Mustang AA/GS. I recognized them for what they were immediately, and decided that if were possible, I needed to own and restore them. I was lucky enough to submit the winning bids on both. (At the same time, our own Mark B was buying three other Car Model feature models with the same idea in mind. I invite him to chime in and share them in this thread, if he wants.) Both models turned out to be in even better condition than I’d hoped (all things considered). First up, Paul Sable’s Henry the 8th Mustang A/FX(-ish) from the February 1966 issue of Car Model. This was the subject of a 4-page build article. The model arrived without glass and on a different chassis/wheels/tires from those seen in the mag article, and no engine, but the flocked interior was present and in good shape, and the paint on the body was actually in better shape than it looked like in the ePay photos. A great deal of what looked like damage to the paint was just some kind of ick that washed off. Last weekend I restored the body and interior of this one; finished pics to follow Under Glass as soon as I can get them taken. The other model is Phil Jensen’s amazing kitbashed/scratchbuilt model of Ohio George Montgomery’s Malco Gasser ’67 Mustang, which was the subject of a detailed 8-page (!) build article in the March 1969 issue of Car Model. This was long before the MPC kit appeared. The ePay photos looked like the model had some damage and possibly even some missing parts, but when it arrived, it seemed to be complete, mainly just needing the front wheels remounted and a few other things glued back solid. It should all go back together just fine, and I couldn't ask for a better “restoration manual” than the original article, which included a very complete list of all parts and materials used, and even some patterns for scratchbuilt parts. I plan to just clean this one and restore it to as original a condition as possible. I couldn't be more honored and humbled to have the chance to own and restore these pieces of model car history.

AFAIK, it's yet another reissue of the pre-2010 Camaro Concept car, which is a little different from any production version but still a good looking model. It's just molded in a cool pearl green this time.

GM burgundy interiors
Snake45 replied to Merkur XR4Ti's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This has come up before. I've seen a Krylon rattlecan at Walmart that's definitely in this neighborhood--I think it's called Oxblood or something of the kind. Don't overlook crafts acrylics--they're great for interiors, cheap, and available in MANY colors. Come to think of it, not long ago I used a craft acrylic called Brandy Wine that's also similar (it was a glossy, though). -

I knew it was a mistake to let trucks in. -

7 Muscle Cars I Hope Will Be Kitted Soon
Snake45 replied to 69NovaYenko's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mine too, pretty much. We could REALLY use a new '65 GTO, '67-'68 Cougar, '65-'66 Barracuda, and '69 Firebird. And I believe all of these would be good sellers. -
Very nice, very clean! Model on!

Looking for source for Lakewood ladder bars

Closest I've ever seen to that is in the AMT '72 Nova, which was just reissued for the one millionth time. -
MPC Early Mustang Question
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
It appeared in the February '66 issue, so was obviously built in 1965. The rear wheels on the chassis I got might be from the original build (they're the same kind), but probably not--nothing else is, including the front wheels and all four tires. I never realized the original AMT Mustangs had single exhaust chassis. Interesting. On the original chassis, he drilled new axle holes to raise the front suspension, and added traction bars from the AMT '65 Fairlane, which I'm not likely to find. No details on the engine are given or shown other than mentioning that he added the headers from the '65 Fairlane--I have no idea what induction he used (probably whatever's in the AMT '65 kit). Actually I don't have a big problem with using the chassis I got it with--it's certainly all period correct. It's even possible that Sable himself updated it at some point--I'm trying to get in touch with him. I can come up with an engine of some sort, but it will have to be low-rise induction--despite the nicely done bubble on the hood, it's completely solid underneath, no hole or cutout and I have no interest in trying to grind or hollow it out. I actually restored the body and interior last weekend; just haven't gotten pics taken yet. For now it's still sitting on the yellow chassis, but it looks AMAZING. -
I agree too, but I doubt we'll ever see such from R2.

MPC Early Mustang Question
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The body and interior are definitely AMT '65 annual. The model was originally built with the original kit frame--I have magazine photos from 1966 showing it so. I'm just trying to figure out maybe when this yellow MPC chassis was swapped in. -
Absolutely outstanding! Too bad the old Car Model Custom Contest isn't around anymore. This would have been a sure winner, and I don't see much in the design that Mark Gustavson could have nitpicked! VERY well done and model on!

65 Continental Roadster Pick-up (Ranchero style)

Very nice indeed! I've often thought of doing something very similar. Thanks for showing that the idea works! Well done and model on! -
There's one you don't see often! Sweet!

MPC Early Mustang Question
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That was my first thought, too, as I've seen some white MPCs get a little "yellow." But no, this one is definitely molded in this color, it's not white. -

Magnetic Panel Line Accent
Snake45 replied to NOBLNG's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Your problem is easily solved. Put your black paint in your scribed-out panel lines BEFORE primer or paint. Wipe away any "magnetic splatter" with rubbing alcohol while still wet. Your panel lines will look more realistic doing it this way, too. -
Hobby Boss Fury
Snake45 replied to philo426's topic in WIP: All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
It's a Sabre descendant/offshoot, though probably nothing interchangeable by that point in their evolution. Nice model. I have the old Matchbox kit of this airplane, but haven't yet seen a Hobby Boss.
