"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
ScaleAsylum and Jeff, you're both in! GITTER DONE! -
The AMT '55 Nomad was a decent gasser kit in its day. I hope to build another one in out-of-the-box gasser mode very soon.

I remember HO-ish (or Hot Wheel-ish sized) Mustangs in 1966 (all three body styles in red, yellow, and light blue--just try to collect all 9!) and Cougars in 1967 from somebody--General Mills or Post? Don't remember what kind of cereal it was but I remember eating a LOT of it and being disappointed more than once by YET ANOTHER light blue convertible.

What non-auto model did you get today?

You could always do it as one of the modern Warbird -5s flying with the tricolor scheme. I believe there are at least a couple. -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Just remembered, I have an 80%+ finished '40 Ford I started over a decade ago that would also be a good candidate for completion. Will try to get a pic of it tomorrow. -
I'm surprised you didn't open up the slots in the steering wheel spokes! No I don't do that on EVERY Corvette model I do, but I've done it on a couple, and it really makes a difference in realism. If you don't want to do that (and I wouldn't blame you, as it's a PITA), maybe try flowing a black wash into the slots. That would help. I was typing my post with the distributor shield tip as you were posting this one. Kudos on saving that chassis. I don't think I'd have bothered--I just picked up a couple of '75 roadsters CHEAP at Ollie's just for parts. I think I'd have just built me a new one. I have an AMT '73 coupe glue bomb to restore sooner or later. But I think I'm gonna take one of these '75 roadsters and graft on a Revell '68 or '69 rear end and make a '73 roadster out of it. The '73 is my favorite year of the "shark" Corvettes, with the no-chrome front end but the original squared-off rear. (Last year at the local toy show I walked away from a '73 MPC promo coupe in yellow. He wanted $45 for it. Any other show I'd have grabbed it in a heartbeat but I'd already spent nearly $100 at this show, VERY high for me, and figured I already had the AMT '73 coupe, which has a better shape...but I've been kicking myself ever since...)

VERY cool project, I am so digging it! And your pics and your explanations of what you're doing are excellent--thanks so much! At the moment, I'm working on a '75 promo, molded in orange. Won't hijack your thread but here's a couple pics of what I started with. Looks like I bought this in 2016 at the local toy show and I don't remember the price but doubt I paid more than $20 for it. I am polishing the orange plastic, which of course brings problems of its own. The rear bumper on mine "fit" so badly it looked like a separate piece badly assembled, but it's all one piece (with the body) of course. I spent several evenings filing the deck lid and rear quarter sides so they matched the bumper perfectly without all the waviness and humps it came with . This had to be VERY carefully done because I'm polishing the bare plastic for the finish. As you mention, the fit of the (separate) front bumper is a nightmare. I have several evenings of careful filing and sanding just to get the top/front edge of the body and bumper to line up. I'm finally pretty close--almost there. The bottom edge of it, where it meets the fenders, is even worse. I'm not gonna cut it apart, as you have, but I will probably end up gluing it in place solid and then filing and sanding the lower edges of the front fenders and the pan to meet, mate, and flow smoothly together, as they should. I think there is just enough meat in the plastic in this area to get away with it, though I might have to grind away a little of the front of the chassis to get that in afterwards. I shaved (filed) down the rear part of the roof a little--maybe .010" or a bit more--which gave it a more accurate profile. (The "new" AMT '70 Corvette kit REALLY needs this done--the rear of the roof is visibly too high on that one.) I'm probably gonna paint the interior saddle/tan, because I'm afraid of black "ghosting" through the orange plastic on the roof. Had that happen with a red Revell '63 Vette I polished up. I can relate to you on having to grind/Dremel out glass. Not too long ago I had to do that on an original AMT '67 Vette glue bomb I picked up cheap. First time I've ever had to do that. I'm pretty darn good at either prying or cutting out glued glass, but this one was just WAY too bad and there was no other way. Thanks again for this thread, and do keep us posted! BTW, there's very little reason to put plug wires on a '60s-'70s street Vette. The big radio shield over the distributor pretty much hides the plug wires anyway.

One of the most remade films of all time must be Rio Bravo. It was remade as both El Dorado and Rio Lobo, but (IMHO, of course) its best remake was as John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. AP13 was remade in 2005, but before that, Jim Wynorski did a real low-budget remake with an almost all-female cast called The Assault. The first The Purge movie was also a remake of it, and I've heard that Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars was, too, though I've never seen it so can't really say. I've also seen elements of it come up on The Walking Dead. Didn't see the remake of The Magnificent Seven but I'd like to. I'm a big fan of the original. Some great lines in there: "Solving your problems isn't our line." "We deal in lead, friend." I would LOVE to see Magnificent Seven remade in a modern, urban setting. I think it would work great. How has somebody NOT ever pitched that to Samuel L. Jackson?

The sheets don't HAVE to be perforated, as long as they're tight in the frame. I discovered that you can vac plain .030 plastic just fine. .020 will often work, too. If you can't get a good "lock" on it, you can wrap the edges with a layer of vinyl tape.

Panzer IVs are cool! You just reminded me I started a Monogram one back in the '70s...should dig it out and finish it someday.... -
So was the original! Definitely the sickest thing I'd ever seen up to that time.
-
I got one of these a couple months ago in a Big Box O Glue Bombs. Built with the double bubble top, which doesn't interest me at all. Not sure what I'll do with it--anybody need one?

I'm just the opposite--I saw the original decades ago and had no idea it had been remade.

Okay Eric, you're in. I assume that's the "80% Duesenburg"? -
AMT and MPC Please Put Out Significant Kits
Snake45 replied to regular guy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
When I was a kid, a guy on my paper route sometimes had a hot rod in his driveway (otherwise hidden away in a garage). I believe I eventually found out it was a '33 or '34 Plymouth. I always thought THAT was a hella cool looking car, and I'd buy and build a model of that. -

Lordmodelbuilder, you're in. Junkyard Jeff, post a pic of what you're starting with and you're in too. -
Woohoo! In that shiny silver, it looks like something George Jetson should be driving! Ten years ago, one of these would have brought a pretty penny on eBay. Thanks to the reissue, I now own three unbuilt kits and there is still a large stack of them at Ollie's for $10 each. Maybe I should get another one.

Okay, I'm officially declaring with this Get Smart Sunbeam Alpine. I got the windshield frame fixed (the other day) since this pic was taken, and hopefully I'll have just enough warm enough weather to paint it next week. If it falls through, I've got a couple already-painted backups. -

Great! Two years certainly qualifies as "stalled." Post a current pic (where it is right now) and you're officially registered. -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Good question! Let's say you have to have started it over a year ago, or let's say before the end of the year 2017. If you've been working on it that long, but not actively and continuously, I'd consider it "stalled." That sound fair? -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Hmmmm. Okay, let's say this is the "official" registration thread, where you post your interest and one pic of what you're going to finish, and then one pic of the completion. You can post your in-progress pics here if you want, or start a regular Workbench thread for them if you'd prefer. Similarly, you can post all your finished pics here or start a regular Under Glass thread for them if you want. How's that all sound? Just since you asked the question, I'll put you down as the first "officially registered" builder. I see that Jantrix has posted a pic and declared, so he's officially in, too. Richard Bartrop has posted a pic with interest, so I'll pencil him in, too. I still haven't decided between my '69 Nova and Camaro, and I have a couple other possibilities I could go with as well. Hmmmmmm.... -

I had a feeling we'd be hearing from you about that. I'd have preferred either an F8F-2 or an F4U-4. But the Hellcat is cool and I much prefer the -5 version over the more commonly kitted -3. I've never bought a 1/24 model airplane. Don't have the patience to do all that detailing, don't have the room to display one.
