AMT 'Super Boss' Barracuda Funny Car! Update! #16: 3/23/15
Snake45 replied to Speedfreak's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Flat Black is for some reason troublesome in some cases. Here's a possibility: They were painted with AMT lacquer flat black. Lye-based paint removers sometimes won't touch these, but they succumb to common rubbing alcohol. You might give that a try. -
Elly May Clampett has passed away at 81
Snake45 replied to Custom Hearse's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
81? She was almost as old as my mother! Who knew? -
Oh hells yes! Hot Smokin' Sassafrass was my favorite song for a while. How about a song called Did You See Her Eyes? I think the band was Elephant's Memory, or something like that....

building a vintage junior stocker nhra 65 chevelle wagon......
Snake45 replied to AC Norton's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Great project! Last year I finished up one of these (started several years ago) as a lower Modified Production, which isn't really all that far from your Junior Stocker. (I think you saw it and commented on it.) All things considered, it was a really fun build. Have you tried putting the engine in the chassis with those headers attached? I found I had to file MAJOR clearance notches in the A-arms to get the engine in (the kit instructions would have you add the headers after the engine is in the chassis). If you want a better chassis, you could use one from the Revell '65 Chevelle or their '66 Chevelle wagon. (You'd have to add the inner fenders if you did this.) Have fun with this and keep us posted on progress! I LOVE projects of this type! -
I remember when I was a kid, Blue Cheer was on the Steve Allen TV show and Steve said they were the loudest thing he'd heard since he heard cannon fire when he was in the Army.

Took a look at the insides of both bodies last night. NO commonality in inside tooling marks. None. Still, the similarities in many areas of these two bodies is amazing. I've never seen an AMT and MPC body this close to each other before. Interestingly, the FC rear wheel openings are extended rearward, not just enlarged all around. I supposed this was so the wheelbase would fit their standard Logghe chassis, which was originally under a GTO and a Charger.

Also Blue Cheer and Eddie Cochrane.
-
Was it Carl Perkins? Beyond that, I dunno.

Very nice, and great use of Rally Wheels!

I've never used the cans, but the bottle colors are VERY thin and translucent. You MUST shoot them either over a white primer, or a primer close to the final color. I think some of the "Boyd" colors were picked up and added to the regular lines under different names. Testor did the same thing with some of the Ed Roth colors in the '60s.

Tull, Aqualung.

Hey, don't rag on the Bee Gees! Amidst the tons of poppy junk, they actually produced four or five EXCELLENT songs. (Doesn't sound like much but that's four or five more excellent songs than you or I have done.)

Tree House Studio Clear Acrylic High Gloss Sealer
Snake45 replied to jdhog's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I'm glad to hear that. I'm DEFINITELY going to pick up a can and give it a try now. -
Very nice! To me, the Corsair shape--and this kit--has almost endless cool possibilities.
-
If I were doing that, at this point I'd be tempted to take about a half-inch off the back of the car, and then move the rear wheels forward about a half inch.

I would have bet ten thousand dollars that no white boy, anywhere, could even begin to do justice to Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing." I'd have lost. This is awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DMQNatt_tw

Tree House Studio Clear Acrylic High Gloss Sealer
Snake45 replied to jdhog's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Very interesting. After some initial success with Krylon Crystal Clear, I haven't had much luck with it since. It seems to dry VERY thin, and I have to put on at least 10-12 coats to have enough to polish out. And it doesn't seem to dry particularly glossy, though it does polish up nicely if I get ENOUGH of it on. Right now I have to repaint a Camaro I did with the stuff because with "only" about 8 or 10 coats of that clear on it, I polished right through it and through the color underneath. I've gone to Testor One Shot Wet Look for my clear for the moment (or my alltime favorite, Model Master Clear Top Coat enamel if its yellowing is not an issue on a particular build). Still...based on the pics posted above, I do believe I'll pick up and try a can of the Tree House Studio stuff. -
AMT to MPC Molds/Kits/Tooling?
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks so much, Mark, I was really hoping you'd weigh in on this thread. Your knowledge of our history is AWESOME. I'd forgotten about the 2nd Gen Barracuda tooling going from AMT to MPC. I knew that one, too--I have an original AMT '67. I want to look some more at those two Cougar bodies. They are just TOO close to say definitely that they came from completely separate molds (but not quite close enough to say with certainty that they didn't). Thanks again for your input and big brain. -
AMT to MPC Molds/Kits/Tooling?
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, I was thinking that might have been another possible collaboration but I've only ever owned the AMT-packaged reissue of the woody so wasn't sure about its history. -
That's great, and the homeless will really benefit if you get pneumonia. Seriously, good luck with all that.

AMT's collaboration with JoHan (especially on Oldsmobiles and AMs) is well known. It's also well known that the AMT and MPC names have been used on each others' kits since the '80s or so. I'm not talking about any of that. The discussion below on the '67-'68 Cougar tooling (it appears as if the body of the MPC Cougar funny car MIGHT have originated as the AMT stock kit) got me wondering if AMT passed any other tooling down to MPC in the '60s. The only one I can think of is AMT's Car Craft Dream Rod, which became MPC's Tiger Shark (molds still exist today, AFAIK). Did MPC end up with any other originally AMT tooling? Or in the case of Dream Rod/Tiger Shark, did the new MPC company actually DO the tooling on that, and AMT just packaged/sold it for a few years under its name? Discuss....

Well I cheated and looked it up. "Original artist" on this song was...Eric Burden & The Animals, who recorded it in 1966! Newman himself recorded it on his 1970 album. The Three Dog Night version is of course the best known and the only one most people (myself included) have ever actually heard.

As everyone else said, to get more building done. I have dozens of projects "started" (I am just a horrible person). I'd be very pleased if I could get between 8 and 12 of them actually FINISHED this year. That said, and more specifically: 1. I made a list last summer of a whole bunch of aftermarket stuff I need from Modelhaus and others. I need to sit down and actually ORDER all that stuff. 2. I've accumulated a couple dozen '63-'67 Sting Rays, with plans to do a complete series of stockers, plus several customs and racers. I'm gonna try to get at least one or two of these done this year, prolly one of the customs.

Absolutely! One of my top ten fave songs of the '60s, and one that ALWAYS makes me happy when I hear it. I could have my head in a noose, about to kick the chair away, and that could come on the radio and I would say, "Oh, wait, lemme get out of this thing and get down and dance."
