I check out ARC and Modelingmadness every day, but only post on Hyperscale. That's where the "big kids" of Model Airplane World hang out. I am a thorn in their side, and an embarrassment to them. -
Here are some pics comparing the Revell body. The old MPC really stands up shape-wise, and the thinner headlight bezels are actually MORE accurate than the newer Revell kit's. Strange but true. The old MPC had no provisions for taillights, just their louvers, so I hand-painted them on at the time.

I bought this kit from a collector/dealer in 1969 for the outrageous price of $5.00. And built it. If Revell hadn’t come out with a new one, I’d seriously consider stripping it down to bare plastic and rebuilding it, but I prefer to keep it as a relic of my youth. Paint was AMT Candy Gold Base with AMT Clear Gloss lacquer topcoat. It has some (many) flaws but it’s better than some stuff I built back in the day. Sorry about the sucky pics. It actually looks a little better than the photos—for some reason my camera’s flash was only working on a random basis the other day, and some of these pics have been “pushed” in photoshop, which makes it look like there’s a lot of dust in or on the finish. Oh yeah there’s SOME dust in the paint, but not what it looks like in some of the pics. Wheels and tires are from some 1969 kit—I think maybe the AMT Chevelle SS396. This is a true “restoration.” I disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled everything, and did a little bit of touchup here and there (silver Sharpie on the wheel opening trim, etc.), But didn’t really change anything. Oh yeah, I did lower the rear end a little—I thought by today’s standards I’d jacked the assend up just a bit too much. Oh, and I carefully trimmed the “hinges” on the hood so it would fit the opening a little better. Here it is with the reissued '67 I built in the early '90s.

Not sure I've ever exactly done this with cars. Close, but not exact. At the moment I have a '69 Camaro and a '69 Nova, both in Fathom Green, going. Couple years ago I did a '99 Camaro for my son and decided to Snake-slap an AMT '93 Camaro snapper together at the same time (more or less). Have kinda done it with airplanes. It's not uncommon for me to be working on three or four different airplanes requiring the same paint job, usually '50s USN Glossy Sea Blue. I might have a couple Corsairs, a Bearcat, and a Skyraider all hitting the paint shop at the same time, but they're likely to be different kits, even different scales. About a decade ago, I DID build two Hobbycraft Hawker Sea Furies at the same time. They both sat for years waiting for paint. I finished the blue one about two years ago, and the silver one last fall.

I've built that kit twice, and I don't remember any particular problems with the exhaust alignment if assembled just according to kit instructions. The REAL be-yotch with this kit is getting the finished chassis into the body for final assembly. (Hint: don't glue the firewall to anything. Just let it "float" as you finagle the chassis into the body, and it will snap right up into place like magic. Strange but true.)

It arrived today. The hood and front bumper seem to be perfect fits, and I can also use the chassis, engine, etc. Now all I have to do is strip the paint off the '73 body and fix some window-glue damage on the roof.

Couple years ago I bought a Corvette "junkyard" off eBay that turned out to have a restorable original AMT '73 Corvette Coupe body in it--but no hood or front bumper. No other currently available Corvette parts fit and Modelhaus doesn't repop these. Last Sunday I scored a reasonably priced unbuilt AMT '75 roadster on eBay. It arrived today and the hood and front bumper seem to be perfect fits. Better yet, I now won't even have to scrounge up chassis, engine, etc for the project--I seem to have everything I need to go.

AMT 'Super Boss' Barracuda Funny Car! Update! #16: 3/23/15

Heck, that's no big deal. Paint 'em whatever black you want, then just sand or scrape the tops of the letters to let the white show through. Perfect lettering every time! -

If I'm going for an original factory paint job, I deliberately leave a little orange peel. Real cars had/have it. Very difficult to achieve it in scale but I try for it sometimes. -
Very nice! I've been wanting to do the same thing for YEARS now! Good for you!

Check out the dollhouse section of hobby/crafts stores. I've seen bags of "oranges" and I think other fruits that might be about the right size.

Are you doing COPO 9560 (aluminum) or 9561 (iron L72)? Don't forget, the kit's Rallys are still a correct option for either.

What a sad end for that beautiful old 310. -

I'm with you, Duntov. I've got a couple of new things to post, but I'll wait until all the Year In Review threads start to fade. -

Any paint that's rough or orange-peely enough to make this idea attractive, I'd rather knock it down to flat and smooth with #1000-#2000 Wetordry sandpaper, wet, and then take the hand-polish from there. But that's just me. -

I can't explain it either, but I'd rather restore an old glue bomb--especially a rare or long OOP one--than build the finest new kit on the market. "New" copies of this kit are readily available, yet "rescuing" an old original is still just so much more satisfying! -

Tree House Studio Clear Acrylic High Gloss Sealer
Snake45 replied to jdhog's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Here's a Vette I did with the Krylon Crystal Clear. Took many many coats of the stuff, and a lot of rubbing, but it did come out shiny. I'm gonna try the Tree House stuff.
