Motor trend super models
Snake45 replied to R. Thorne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just downloaded the MT GO ap onto TLMS's IPad. Apparently this show isn't available through that. My cable company doesn't offer Motor Trend TV. I'm not paying good US dollars to watch the thing. -
Now that's an interesting twist! There have been a bunch of the old Revell model airplanes I built as a kid reissued lately, and I've bought some of them.
-
I have one of these, unbuilt, although I might have started the truck. Let me know if you need anything and I'll see if I can spare it. Not that interested in parting out the trailer, but I have no interest in the "damaged" parts of the Ford, and possibly other stuff in there as well. I can't get PMs here for some reason but you can email me direct at SnakeACP45 at AOL dot com

Very interesting! I have a somewhat similar story. I've heard the song "Eclipse" hundred if not thousands of times over the years but never really paid all that much attention to the lyrics. Just a couple years ago it came on the radio in the car and for some reason, for the very first time I actually heard the very last line and it absolutely blew my mind!

1/25 Revell '63 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe SnapTite
Snake45 replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I looked into this a couple years back, as I have a glue bomb AMT '65 roadster body with the windshield frame missing completely. I was very disappointed to discover that it would NOT be a direct "bolt-on." Maybe either the body or the frame or both could be altered to get them together, I dunno, but I do distinctly remember thinking, "Well, shoot, THAT's not gonna work." -

Whosurdaddy is converting a '63 snapper roadster into a '67. You're right that there are noticeable changes between a '63 interior and a '67. I can't think of any reason why the snapper '63 interior couldn't be adapted or altered to work with the '67 chassis, though. -
Several times now The Lovely Mrs. Snake has dragged home a broken ceramic nik-nak from a friend's or sister's home, and I've been able to superglue or epoxy the pieces back together (sometimes it's like a 3D jigsaw puzzle) and then touch up the finish with hobby paints. Besides cars I also do military models, so have a wide range of colors available--especially greens of all sorts.

Rustoleum Clear Gloss Lacquer
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
No. Haven't seen it. It wouldn't surprise me if it weren't the same thing with a different name, but I haven't used it so can't vouch for it personally. -
Clear over Boyd's Enamel???
Snake45 replied to Danger's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
In my experience, more often someone will take a process or technique that you explain very carefully to them, then modify the process in some way or substitute materials, and then whine to you that "your technique didn't work at all." That's why I gave up giving in-person painting lessons/tips/advice about 30 years ago. One of the last guys I tried to teach was the ONLY guy I ever worked with who ever did exactly what I said, and he got exactly the results I got, and only THEN did he start doing his own experimenting and soon was doing paint jobs even better than mine! I was so proud of him. -
It's a rare week I DON'T use my modeling skills, experience, tools, and/or materials on some non-model project around the house, car, or work. Probably what I use most is my "modeling mindset" to reverse-engineer a project, starting with the desired finished result and working backward to find all the steps I need to take to get from here to there. If you stay with it long enough to get good at it, model-building will teach you practical and logical problem solving!

Caesar, did you ever answer this? I went back and looked and can't find HOW this happened.

Clear over Boyd's Enamel???
Snake45 replied to Danger's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've only ever seen the Pearl Purple in enamel bottles and rattlecans, and acrylic bottles. Never saw it in lacquer in any form, and I don't think I've ever seen any Model Master rattlecan acrylics. At any rate, my standard method to use the Rustoleum is: one light mist coat, dry, another light mist coat, slightly heavier, dry, then one light but full wet coat, dry, then heavier wet coats. It's worked for me several times now. -
Clear over Boyd's Enamel???

I'll see your 36 years of painting and raise you a decade. All I can tell you is what I've done THAT WORKED (and more than once, too). I also believe in safe versus sorry. That's why when I have any doubt at all, I TEST on spoons or scrap bodies. I wouldn't DREAM of trying some new paint technique or material on a rare body or something I had a lot of time and work in. Caution is good. So is trying new things and seeing if they work for you. -
Beautiful animal! Puts me more in mind of Steppenwolf, though. Or maybe something Ted Nugent might have written a song about.

Here's what I said: -
In other words, not OOB at all. But it looks great--badass stance, good color and great finish. Well done and model on!

I did and it worked fine. Read the thread. -
Agree. I've only used MM Metalizer a few times. First time was on bare plastic on a model airplane. Found out how VERY fragile the stuff is--too much handling would rub it right off. Second time I shot it over a primer, which helped it stick better, but the finish was not really better than say Floquil Old Silver or Pewter. But I did get my best silver finish on a model car ever with MM Aluminum Non-Buffing Metalizer. I shot it over primer, then cleared it with the Metalizer Sealer, and it's MUCH better looking than any silver auto paint I've ever tried.

Interesting! I was heavily immersed in all things Bowie in 1973 and dutifully bought Pinups, played it once, and didn't care for it at all. I think the only song on the whole album I played more than once was "I Can't Explain." I'll have to give this another listen. He did redeem himself with me with Diamond Dogs, though.

Yah, I still have a couple of the AMT Yenko issues of that kit I bought mainly for the wheels and tires (two sets of each). I built my last copy of the last resissue before they screwed the roof up a few years ago. In all I've built five of the MPC Camaros and can't see myself ever building another one.

Again, nice to know someone actually reads my deathless prose. Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks Zippi, Oldschool, Mike, David, and ATHU! Much appreciated!

It is a good question! But I've never had it happen in over 30 years. I once tried to craze styrene by airbrushing pure lacquer thinner on it. I found that I had to airbrush it on so heavy it was literally dripping off, and even then the crazing was minor. It seems the LT flashes off so quickly it doesn't really have time to ruin anything if applied with anything approaching a normal painting technique.
