Moebius Comet... Wild Bubbletop Show Rod- Done! 3-17

Thanks bob! So to layer parts like that: I usually rough up the surfaces to be glued with a sanding sick, both surfaces with approximately 150grit.. I do this before gluing anything really... it helps break the surface tension and lets the glue bite faster I just flood one side with the tamiya extra thin cement, sometimes on large parts I do a couple applications of the glue before stacking. then really quickly put the other on top.. like really quickly before the glue evaporates. Align the parts as best you can as fast as you can... you have a couple seconds to do this. Then clamp it between two flat pieces of wood ( I think this is the answer to your original question, but the other info seemed valuable as well) Let that sit while you prep the next layer... un-clamp and repeat for the next layer, once all layering is done I let it sit overnight before sanding and handling. I hope that helps... that is pretty much my procedure for all the layering I do.. It takes some time, but I'm getting warp free parts from .020 with this method. -

Thank you Kerry! Subframe/Floorpan/Whatever all done... Lately I've really enjoyed the challenge of keeping my raw styrene fabrication super clean and tidy... so this was pretty rewarding. At this point everything except the body is made from .020 Styrene Sheet and Evergreen Rods.. haha -

Thank you Mike! A couple nights of bench time this weekend... woohoo! Made my own new chassis pan... still needs to be trimmed to fit and modified for engine/transmission clearance, but its a good clean start.... I needed to make wheel tubs so i Vac-Formed another trusty pill bottle with .030.... then glued that into place... just a little trimming and finishing work to go. -

Thanks guys!!! Here you go Bob... they are pretty expensive... Hopefully some resin caster buys a set and makes lots of copies so everyone can have them for a reasonable price... (in writing) I would be 100% okay with that. https://www.shapeways.com/product/WU7HX3SEY/1-25th-scale-pie-crust-whitewall-slicks-drag-tire?optionId=64469255&li=marketplace I mostly use adobe illustrator to create my cutting paths then import it into the silhouette software to cut, however i have used the silhouette software to draw simple shapes and it works really good. You can create the paths in any outside software that allows you to export a .dxf file. I'm just more comfortable in illustrator, but autocad and some other design programs would work as well. Let me know how it works for you and if you have any questions. Im using the silhouette portrait cutter... The only major difference in the portrait and the other models is cut size, the portrait only cuts 8"wide.. which is fine by me... So far it will cut .010 styrene sheets all the way through... .020 styrene it will score and then i have to snap the parts out... basically prepare to lightly hand trace everything with an Xacto.. especially small intricate parts.. I recently purchased a couple 4'x8' sheets of .020 so i use it for pretty much everything. i havent tried .030... but i would assume it will score it just fine. i have used it to cut vinyl, and clear lay film for windows, works great. It is not the most accurate machine i have used(small circles aren't perfectly round), but for the price, it works great. I have used it now for a couple years and haven't noticed any dulling of the blades from cutting styrene, you should be okay. -

Thank you all and Happy Holidays and New Year!!! I didn't get much small scale modeling done over the past week... but i did order my slicks from shapeways and they are pure awesomeness!! Here they are with the round 2 racemasters i have David.... diameter wise they were correct... but I wanted the massive width.. probably not accurate to any 1:1 thing at the time... but what the hay... -

I realllyyyyy need to do this... I think im going to talk to Andy and see if he and I could knock out a quick YouTube video... hes better at that kind of stuff. Thank you Chan! great info... My friend Andy has one of the newer Cricut Air machines... and it seems very similar to the silhouettes.. The downfalls we have discussed are mostly with the online software being cumbersome, I guess you can still import a .dxf file but you have to upload it into an online cloud service? im not 100% sure on this, because i haven't used his machine directly. He also has said that my silhouette seems less accurate, but will cut smaller things... his cricut cuts perfectly round circles, where mine makes ovals that i then end up drilling out round. Something else we should probably make a video of... a comparison of the 2 machines... I feel that each have some strengths and weaknesses Thank you sir! The craft cutter is amazing... for me its quicker and much more user friendly/predictable than my 3d printer. Once you start thinking in layers, its quite mind boggling what you can produce. -

Thanks Tom!!! I managed to get some bench time on the frame... its kinda funny to me that 2 years ago I sent Andy (exesivefire) a message about how apprehensive I was to make a frame from scratch for a project... He told me to man up and make a frame that actually fits, now it seems i have to make a frame for everything... haha Here is where i left off last night: And then I tossed the engines on the sled.... Motor mounts and rear suspension up next: -
Thank you for a bit of the backstory on Chris... I had never met him personally but had on Facebook, I was lucky enough to work with one of his amazing resin engines.. Very sad day for our hobby. Prayers.

Very awesome as I expected... Great job Brizio!

I recently picked up one of these.... love the wide rear flares and narrow track... "Race bred... Street wise."

Thanks guys!! I bought a couple 4'x8' sheets of .020 so I use it for everything.. The main rails are 4 layers and the center support is 3 layers. Thank you Bill! Its a tremec t-56 out of the 2004 Pontiac GTO that gave up the LS2. The rear end is an infinity Q45 Limited Slip, 3:54 ratio... its huge!! just a little smaller than a ford 9". I actually just wrestled all of those parts out yesterday, when we built the car we never painted the undercarriage.. so after 8 years of rattle can primer its getting stripped, tossed back on the rotisserie and sprayed with some actual paint. -

Thanks guys! The Datsun going to be a fun full-size model project, started tearing into it yesterday... so simple, yet so cool. I got a couple evenings of bench/computer time... First up was the rear tires... I wanted pie-crust whitewall slicks...but all the kit options seemed a bit narrow or small in diameter. I wanted something 1.25"dia but close to .75 wide.. After some searching I just decided to model them up in my 3D program, this let me do inner and outer white wall inserts.. because showrod. Waiting for shapeways to have a sale, or coupon code so i can get these ordered... they are a bit pricey.. 25ish for the pair... honestly I should resin cast them... but i only need one set and I have zero knowledge of resin. Once that was done... i did whats becoming my usual process of scanning the body to create the chassis design in adobe illustrator. Then setup the layers and output to the silhouette scrapbook cutter for production. Stacked and glued... quick mockup... still a lot more assembly to do. -

Thanks everyone for checking this thing out and providing encouragement!!! I haven't gotten much bench time lately... I picked up a new 1:1 car... and its been nice enough to play with it a bit... the weather is supposed to turn this week, so hopefully back at it soon. Oh man that looks awesome!!!! I really dig the shorter profile... I'm probably not going to try that on this, only because this is for a build a Comet contest.. and i need to try and keep some parts recognizable and intact. However I do think yours looks better, and it has my head thinking of some other future projects. I love the side pipes... this will most likely have something like that going on. Thanks for knocking that out.. I love it! -
Awesome!!! Ive been wanting to build one of those... into one of these....for awhile now... I'm never going to get around to it... not sure what you are planing, but these instantly came to mind.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement and interest! Ill hopefully post an update here soon... Thanks bob! I'm thinking metal flake violet and pinks for some reason... maybe taking some cues from an actual outer space comet... seems appropriate. Thank you David!! I thought about that... but the duels seem more budget and tech appropriate, thinking a 1:1 would be garage built in the late 60s early 70s.. yeah i overthink my builds.. haha Yeah I think I'm just going to fill it.. I need to make room for the stereotypical show-rod straight axle with coil springs so it might not be 100% filled. I need to get working on a frame and see how everything shakes out. -
Ive recently topped out at 5 vehicles... which is way too many.. but its a diverse odd mix... Daily... 2015 Chevy Spark Manual Winter Beater: Lifted 1996 Dodge Neon Post Apoc Toy Summer Track Toy/Autocross car: 1995 Dodge Neon sport/acr Summer Lowrider/Show car: 1966 Chevy Impala Hardtop And the newest addition... Autocross/Tracktoy = 1973 Datsun 240z with 2004 LS2 and 6-speed 375hp at the rear wheels and 2200lbs... scary.

Thank You for all the comments guys! Not going to lie this is a fun one... I did realize it went nose heavy and long... and i thought about shortening it a bit... but i really don't want to interrupt any of the the factory lines on the side of the car. I think my solution will be to go with twin engines inline, instead of side-by-side like my original plan. That should fill up the anteater nose thing that's going on. hahaha... sorry chris.. totally just my opinion... but i will say it is growing on me. I'm really starting to like the styling of the rear. Here is a bit of progress from the weekend... First, I wedge cut the rocker panels to get the stance correct, then knocked out a quick mockup. After that i started working on the engines....I was able to dig up a couple 428 cobra jets from my dads stash of fords and began modifying them to make the inline setup. -
Well.. thats just purdy.... great work jeff!

Thanks guys!!! taking a bit of a break on this... but ill be back to it eventually. Thanks Tom!! That was a surprise!!! I decided to take a little break from this one, i sort of stalled out on the detail stuff... I plan on looping back around to it before next show season.. and have it completed by the NNL next year! It was great seeing you!

The last 2 years I have been lucky enough to win the Buckeye Classic / Ohio Challenge contest put on by the Buckeye Scale Auto Club, the first year with my pro-tuner Cuda and last year with my Model A streamliner. So naturally im going to try and go for a three-peat. This years challenge is the Moebius Comet, built any way you want. For awhile I struggled with ideas for this, because to me this isnt the prettiest of vehicles... Thinking maybe a lowrider, protouring, gasser, even a sixties custom... Finally looking at the side profile of the car I had an idea.... Crazy Bubbletop Roth-style Show Rod! Im thinking something along the line of the Mysterion... dual engines...dual blowers... piecrust slicks... spindle mounts..metalflake and pearl..... you get the idea.. So first off i decided glue on the hood and remove the roof. Then Piecut the body Then mated it with the top area from the Beatnik Bandit Cut Cut Snip Snip Still quite a way to go... but im pretty happy with the start.
-
thank you guys!!! I haven't made much progress lately... just little things, and trying to think ahead. I decided to go with an engine driven air compressor for the air suspension... I personally have never been a big fan of the exposed electric compressors, even on 1:1 stuff... so i felt conflicted about making them and having them exposed on the bronco. So i decided to grab the york A/C compressor off of the AMT 1962 thunderbird kit. Then I made some brackets/ a finned head and added a bit of detail to the bottom... mounted it on the flathead where the generator would normally live. then i was able to tackle the exhaust.... planning on some side pipes here... but getting it from the engine to the side pipes was a bit tricky. Finally I did a mock-up for our club meeting last night... which was the bronco build deadline... oops... haha... oh well, its probably going to look something like this Saturday at Toledo! hope to see everyone there!

Holy cow!! this is amazing! great craftsmanship and imagination in sourcing parts... I love it!! Outstanding job!
-
Thank you! yeah that was bothering me too... and I did try doubling up the stitch.. but then it got really messy around the outside. When i finished it them up last night, i decided to double up the corners and then pull the cross stitches perpendicular to the frame, instead of at the angle... still not prefect, but I'm happy with them.. Now back to the rest of the model,I kinda got derailed, trying to prove to myself I could make these seats.. haha.
