Turned out really well, but seeing the Boyd's Speedster gets me angry, as this is one of the two kits that I got screwed over on with a scammer. Not you obviously, but was someone around here. Grr. Still, great build!

With a little forced perspective, that would be indistinguishable from the real deal! Fantastic work!

List your favorite cars of all time
iamsuperdan replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Favourite cars of all time. Hmm...well this would be virtually identical to my lottery winnings wish list! 1992 Porsche 964 RS - preferrably in Maritime Blue 1990-1992 VW T3 Transporter Syncro Tristar 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona mid-80s Aston Martin Lagonda mid-90s Volvo T5R wagon in Post-It Note yellow with a manual trans. 1993 Porsche 968CS 1976 Ford Falcon XB - Mad Max replica 2016 Ford F550 - EarthRoamer conversion 2014+ Aston Martin Vanquish Now...if we modify this thread to be my favourite cars of all time THAT I HAVE ACTUALLY EXPERIENCED... 1978 Ford Thunderbird - my first car. Had a 400 V8, metallic brown, vinyl roof, whitewalls. I want it back! 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport - Bought this in 1998, put 400,000km on it. Multiple Jeep Jamborees, camping trips too numerous to mention. I miss this constantly. 1988 Porsche 951 - I was working for the local Porsche dealer in high school (and throughout university and beyond, 13 years in total) and borrowed one of these for a weekend for my girlfriend's grad. For many reasons, this was a fantastic car and a enjoyable weekend. 2004 Porsche Carrera GT - still working for Porsche, acheived Premiere status and got to attend a special driving school. Spent an hour lapping this car around Barber Motorsports Park. Amazing. 1985 VW Transporter Doka - my first MAJOR project. Swapped the stock flat four with a TDI from a 2004 Jetta. Rebuilt and regeared the transmission, bigger turbo and intercooler, lowered Mercedes wheels, full Vanagon interior Sold for a profit, but should have kept it. -
I will totally be buying a couple of these. And the upgrade kit.

Yup, you also have the option of adding the side door or not. Surprising amount of detail on these kits. -

June update is...no update. Although, as per the comments above, I had a look, and my fuel tanks are still shiny chrome. -

Interesting, will have to watch for that. I wonder if shooting them with clear will help? I don't mind the aluminum look anyway, as I can't say that I've seen a newer truck with chrome tanks. Aluminum is a little more realistic looking. -
Looks great! I love wagons.

An Open Letter...
iamsuperdan replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've entered carshows many times, and have walked away with trophies and plaques. I don't go to win, I go to hang out with friends and talk cars for a day, and let people see what kind of wacky stuff I've got. Having said that, it does feel pretty good to have your work recognized. -

X2 I've always been curious about this kit, but the box art was too cartoony, made me nervous to pick it up. Now I can see what the contents look like, and it doesn't appear to be too toy-like. That roof rack is perfect. -
Wonder what's next from Round2 AMT ?
iamsuperdan replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's a tough one. Providing product is one thing, but then you need to market it to the youth. My son is 11 and really couldn't care less about it. He's not anti-car or anything. He enjoys cars, but he sees me at the bench, and he doesn't understand the time it takes. Even just to throw together a box stock build. If it isn;t instant gratification, it's not happening. Conversely, one of his buddies thinks it's "pretty cool" and asks a ton of questions when he comes over and see me working away. My daughter is 8 and she wnats to build with me, so I've been giving her some snap kits I had. I think she's a bigger fan of just hanging with dad and then painting than she is of the actual subject matter. Although she has a thing for Camaros. On another note, to answer the original question, without getting into my rant, what would I want to see? More cars from the 70s and 80s. I love the big old boats from the 70s; Ford Thunderbird and LTD, Plymouth Fury, Chev Caprice. From the 80s, I want a Jeep XJ Cherokee/Comanche, Ford T-Bird, 80s imports. I doubt there's a huge market for this stuff, but it's what I would want. -

Time to stir it up. Although I like some of these kits, I think all of the above are one of the main reasons kids aren't interested in the hobby. Kids just don't care about hot rods from the 40s or muscle cars from the 50s or 60s. There's a place for those kits for sure, but to attract new blood to the hobby, how about some modern vehicles that aren't Mustang, Corvette, or Challenger? More new model trucks. Imports from Japan/Korea. Euro imports. Enough with the retro releases, let's see something new! Can open...worms everywhere. -
The Tragically Hip to go on last tour.
iamsuperdan replied to Can-Con's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
My friends and I have a lot of discussions about music, but one thing they've never been able to get past is that I'm not a huge fan of The Tragically Hip. It's like I'm somehow un-Canadian or something. For those unaware, The Hip are something like royalty up here in the Great White North. Every tour is sold out, every album tops the charts here. You become a Canadian citizen, you're handed a Hip album. TO say you're not a fan is akin to pissing on the flag. For me, it's not that I hate them, far from it. It's just that they're not my cup of tea. I can take them or leave them. Having said all that, this news is more shocking to me than any of the celebrity deaths over the past 6 months. Not just the announcement itself, but what they're planning to do. I can;t even fathom how he gets that diagnosis and then decides to go out and spend his last summer touring. I mean, I guess I kind of understand, as this is what his whole life has been about. But he has four kids. If I received that diagnosis, I'd be spending as much time with the family as possible, not going to work. I'm not going to be one of the fake people buying tickets to their shows out of sympathy or duty or whatever, but I am going to be a little sadder when it all ends. -
Looks great! However, I think I'm more curious in the tow deck you have in the background!
-
Have a look at the box art, then look at the finished product. If you hadn't posted the box, I'd never have guessed what you did there. Nicely done!
-
I don't sneer at them at all. They're trying something I could never get together. However, every year, we see another batch of these big dreamer startups that have a revolutionary new supercar that is hyped to be the best car ever. And then they vanish. So now whenever I see a new supercar with wild designs (like a turbocharged V16) and wild performance claims (0-60 in 1.6sec) I tend to yawn and think about Dana Carvey as the Chruch Lady..."Well now, isn't that special?"
-
Ahh spring...when all of these backyard builders release their supercar concepts on the world. 99% of which never move past the rendering phase. And of that 1% that see a concept built, 99% of those disappear. If I had that kind of money to spend on a car, would I send it to some unknown builder that is unproven? Or would I go and see McLaren or Konigsegg? No brainer there.

iamsuperdan replied to iamsuperdan's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Yay! I actually got some time to work on some kits this weekend! Finally got some of the brake lines run on the Prostar. I need to redo the one, as I'm not completely happy with it. But then again, most trucks aren't perfect in the routing of lines, so I may just leave it. Also tried the Duplicolor Chrome paint on the fuel tanks. I like it. It's not toy-like like the chrome that comes from factory, and is much brighter than anything from the other brands. I've never tried Alclad as I don't have an airbrush, so for now, this stuff works great. -
I read a lot. I have an English degree (and an Education degree) so I'm burned out on the classics, can;t stand most of them now. Fav authors right now: Nelson DeMille, JL Bourne, Kim Paffenroth, Blake Crouch. I'm a big fan of the zombie genre. Always looked for something that gives a little twist on the usual zombie story. I also read a lot of autobiographies, mainly from musicians. Recently finished both the Lita Ford book and the Phi Collen (Def Leppard) autobiographies. Phil's was great, Lita's not so much.

Update is that I currently have no updates. Trying to plan some build time this weekend though.
