Meng Ford F-350
iamsuperdan replied to Terry Jessee's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That is VERY cool. Great job! -
I've been saying fopr a while that Ford needs to take the Mach-E and do a higher performance version, and call it the Shelb-E. Looks like that one is halfway there! What is going on with the hood on the red one? Those two round things look like speakers, but that can't be it. Actuators to open the hood vents?

Looks great! This is still the era I first think of when someone mentions Ferrari.

There's a museum for model cars? There are model projects considered "legendary?" Honestly, had no idea. -
Grill design requests
iamsuperdan replied to Texas_3D_Customs's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Great idea! One question. If there any chance you would make the .stl files available for sale on Cults or any other sites? -
Had a weird discovery last night. So a few months ago, I printed this Dalek. Nice clean print, went well, hollowed it out, added internal supports. I guess I forgot a drain hole in the bottom. What I am assuming happened is that the uncured liquid resin that was left over inside, and maybe the fumes it was giving off (??) caused some pressure build up inside, and with some added heat (it's been quite warm here this past week) it just popped. Luckily, it wasn't on display, and was actually sitting in a little lid/tray thing, awaiting paint. So of course, I immediately went to look and all the prints I could find to see if anything else was happening. So far, no. Anyone else had this happen?

Been looking for this one for a long time. Finally found one for a VERY reasonable price, half what they normally go for on eBay. Kit is complete and damage free.

Well it’s finally announced.?

This idea is actually working in Europe right now. https://www.lynkco.com/en A subscription based car service. Yes, you can just buy one, but you can also "buy" part of one. Interesting idea, and I can see it working for people who live, work, and shop in an urban centre. It's funny though. 20 year old cars are a rarity. With a few exceptions, they've almost vanished, and finding parts is a challenge. But 20 year old trucks? They're everywhere. And parts are readily available. I could buy almost every part and build a brand new version of my 1999 Tahoe or 1995 Sierra 1500. And the newest one of that generation is 22 years old. If I went into our back service area right now, there would be a handful of F-series trucks from the 90s back there. Running, and in decent shape. There's an auto parts store down the street from here. They snap up ALL the PT Cruisers they can find, and use them as their parts delivery vehicles. Must have 20 or 30 of them parked out back every night. -
A man walks into a bar and orders a dozen shots of whiskey. The bartender looks toward the door, expecting to see 11 more folks walk through the door. That doesn't happen. "C'mon, man! I don't have all day!' exclaims the customer. The bartender dutifully pours out 12 shots of tequila. Just as he's pouring the last one, the customer begins slamming the shots, one after the other, in rapid succession. "Whoa, buddy, whoa! Slow down! You'll make yourself sick!" the bartender says. "You'd be drinking fast and furiously too if you had what I have!" the customer retorts, then goes back to slamming the shots. "Oh my God! What do you have?" "Seventy-five cents to my name."

Willing to bet we see it available in an .stl file for the 3D printers very soon. Would not surprise me to learn that several people were working on it now. -

Although fake engine noise is dumb, it does sound cool. And apparently Dodge make it just as loud as a Hellcat can be. 126db. Looks pretty good too. I'm guessing for production, the mirrors will grow and the wheels will change. -

lolz We've had a Stihl battery powered EV lawnmower, leafblower, and weed wacker for a couple of years now. Handles our lawn and yard cleanup just fine. Leafblower is great in the winter for getting rid of snow from the cars or sidewalk. And when it gets deep, I can shovel our driveway faster than our neighbour can snowblow his driveway. No more having to deal with jerry cans and having to head to the gas station for a $5 fill. No dealing with oil changes on a lawnmower. No mixing mixing oil and gas for a weed wacker or dealing with extension cords. Keep telling myself what? That EV works for some people? That it works better when used correctly? That it doesn't work for some people? That the tech will keep improving? That a change is coming and like it or not we're going to have to deal with it? Of course I'll keep saying that, because it's all true. And at no point have I said that I'll be getting an EV for myself. Because it won't work for me and my lifestyle. Yet. This is one I definitely don't get. GM and Ford have both announced EV police/emergency vehicles. GM have the EV Blazer SSV coming, and Ford are doing both a Mach-E SSV and a Lightning SSV. Makes no sense to me. -
You have just described the automotive scene. Regardless of the type of custom they're into. ?

Days of Thunder Revisited.

Days of Thunder is a completely over the top, unrealistic, and completely ridiculous movie. The acting is terrible, the story is even worse. And I love it. -

EVs can work just fine in the winter, provided people learn how to properly operate their vehicles, and provided the cars were designed properly in the first place. This past winter, there were a lot of news stories about Canadian Tesla owners complaining about no heat in their cars. It's a known problem with the heat pump, and Tesla had to issue a recall. And I'll bet there are still more issues this coming winter. On the flip side, Ford have what is essentially a pre-heater on the Mach-E and Lightning. There is a setting one needs to turn on so that when plugged in and charging, the vehicle will start circulating and heating the coolant. This warms the battery and gets the interior to a comfortable temperature. Do it while plugged in, and the power to pre-heat the car comes from the charger, not your batteries. But many people don't have this properly explained to them, so they get in their car in the middle of winter and complain about loss of range and no heat. Does Tesla have any sort of pre-heat? I have no idea. Either they don't, or their drivers don't know how to operate the vehicles. As for costs, the Flo network is one of the bigger ones here in Canada. Over 15,000 chargers in Canada with at least Level 2 charging capabilities. Charging costs vary from station to station. Some charge 21 or 25 cents per minute. Some are a flat $5/hr, and I've seen some at $21 or 25/hr. Many are actually free to use. The DC fast chargers can charge a car from to almost 100% in about an hour. If you install a home charger, and charge once a week, or even twice a week, will your power bill go up each month? Of course. Will it still be less than your monthly fuel bill? Most likely. Chargers are under $1500 CDN right now. I don't think the costs are that bad right now. -
Well it’s finally announced.?
iamsuperdan replied to NYLIBUD's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Costs are coming down for sure, but no one will ever be happy with a $2k repair bill, whether its for a battery pack or a timing belt replacement. It's just the cost of owning a vehicle. Some will pay it, some will ditch the vehicle. Just like what happens now. There are 5 year old vehicles requiring major engine or transmission work that can run upwards of $4k, so it's not much different. -
Well it’s finally announced.?
iamsuperdan replied to NYLIBUD's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In 2015, total costs for battery replacement on a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid was between $8-10k CDN. The company I worked for had several in the rental fleet. When I left there last fall, the total replacement cost was down to $4k CDN. So prices are coming down as these get more common, and the aftermarket catches up. -

I think this thing looks pretty cool from the teaser. Old school Charger-style grille, old school Dodge emblem. EV muscle from a company that puts a 700hp+ motor in almost everything? I guess we find out tonight. -
Well it’s finally announced.?
iamsuperdan replied to NYLIBUD's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Bill, the info you present is generally among the most correct here. I think the only reason many write you off or chastise you is because they tune out as soon as you start calling people "green weenies" or "sheeple." I still think the post you made a while back with the Volvo video comparing ICE to EV was one of the best I've seen. And I still refer to it when discussing with clients. Others though...ICE good, EV bad, no in-between, no rationale, just blindly repeating the talking points of their preferred source of info. -
Well it’s finally announced.?
iamsuperdan replied to NYLIBUD's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
And here we go again. Cue the tired EV complaints and comparisons to peoples' apparently awesome 15 year old cars that are better. ? Dodge announced last year that their ICE cars were going away by 2024. And that they would have a new EV muscle car on the road in 2024. They posted teaser pics last year, so this isn't any kind of big surprise. *puts on flame retardant suit* Something a lot of the naysayers forgets is that the switchover to EV and upcoming bans on sales of new ICE vehicles only applies to non-commercial vehicles. Trucks bigger than 1/2 ton, cargo vans, buses, delivery trucks, etc will continue to be powered by gas and diesel. Also, this will not mean that existing ICE vehicles are banned. Everyone can keep on driving their old cars and SUVs. And you will still be able to purchase used ICE vehicles. Will ICE eventually be phased out of everything? Yup, I think so. But we're decades away from that. And by that time, EV will be generally well accepted as a part of our lives. I can just imagine being back in 1900, when the last major change in transportation fuel happened...the switch to cars from the horse and buggy. Everyone complaining about how much more expensive a car was compared to their horses and buggies. The environmental activists complaining about how much grain and feed horses were consuming. The "emissions" coming from the horses. The flies the emissions attracted. Others complaining about how unsafe these cars were, because all of a sudden we had accidents as people tried to show off their new tech, not really understanding how it was to be used That switch and acceptance took a few decades, as will the switch to EV. Will EV be the right choice for everyone? Nope. Not until the tech improves and gets us more range and faster charging. Is EV the right choice for some? Totally. Is EV green and environmentally friendly? Kind of. Yes, the electrical grid is powered largely by coal still, and the bigger the demand on the power grid, the more coal will be burned. But it will help in the cities and urban centers. Less exhaust, less noise pollution. So cities will technically become greener and air quality will improve. And yes, mining for battery components is currently incredibly dirty. But again, new tech is being introduced, and reliance on some of those components will shrink. Okay, now get it out of your system. Start the arguments telling me that everything I wrote is wrong.
