1/25 AMT '62 Pontiac Catalina Polyglas Gasser II
Dave Darby replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
These look like the old MPC tires. While they certainly wouldn't work with the chrome reversed wheels I would think you could make them work with the stock steelies. Other than maybe clearance issues? -
Those 1/32 scale kits go together just like the Corvette in the photos. I don't think it is necessary to attach the interior panels to the body sides that early, unless I was just tacking them in as an assembly aid. I would deviate from the instructions and assemble and prep the body, then paint and attach the rest of the components.

Annnnd back on track! And I agree.

It's butt ugly and inaccurate. And Barris only built the back up car. The Original was modified from Norm Grabowski's 1924 tub by prop man Kaye Trapp with assistance from Norm Breedlove (Craig's dad).

I'd be pretty surprised if anything were to show up. If anything still existed I'm sure it would have been reissued by now. I do think that it is possible that some portions of the cavities may still be in the tool, but much like how the A la Kart nose is gone from the current Mod Rod kit, the bulk of the XR6 is gone. BTW, besides owning a few XR6 and more current issues, I also read this in an article by either Tim Boyd or Terry Jessee, Dennis Doty or other model kit historian years ago. Nonetheless I'd love a peek inside that tool.
-
Now that would be a possibility. I sure wouldn't be first in line to buy one though.

Ok. I will explain this one more time. The 27 T kit used one tool to make both the T Touring and the XR6. It was not a separate tool. The portion of the tool that had the inserts for the XR6 was cleared out to make room for the MMTC parts. Most of the tool layout was rearranged. Therefore the XR6 no longer exists. If you ever get a chance to see the original kit you can see just how much cool stuff got wiped out, including a pair of chrome cycle wheels for the T Tub.
-
That is correct. The AMT 1927 Model T Touring was a double kit which could build not only a stock or hot rod 27 Touring but also the XR6. The XR6 bit the dust to make room for the MMTC parts. Which was doubly wrong because as I stated before, the REAL car was built from Norm's 24 Model T. So using the 27 T kit was not well thought out. Just a cheap solution that cost us the XR6.

Multi piece body? Not a problem. This is the Revell 60 (Really a 59) kit. One of the perks of the multi piece body is the pioneering use of the platform style interior. Much better than the one piece AMT/ SMP kit with its tub style interior. And no visible seams.

AMT M&H Racemaster Dragster Slicks & Parts Pack Tires
Dave Darby replied to Gregg's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm pretty glad there is a reliable source for those tires as I'm pretty picky about what goes on the front of my hot rods. Most kit tires are too big and bulky to run on the front. I built this AMT 5 window coupe in 1992 and for most of its years it wore a pair of the Mickey Thompson front runners from the Pro Street 70 Coronet kit. These vintage AMT tires were just what I originally wanted. It just took me a bunch of years to find some. -

You're probably right. I didn't have the kit tires in front of me at the time to compare. I just remember the Revell tire being a little taller and skinnier than the AMT tire. -

Looks like the Revell tire on the left and the AMT on the right. Very cool there is an easy source to find them. -
'33 Ford Sedan Delivery...Traditional hot rod
Dave Darby replied to traditional's topic in Model Cars
Well done. Nice take on some unusual subject matter and I like the realistic traditional mods on the sbc. -
Just like downtown!

The XR6 was modified into an empty mold cavity to make room for the My Mother the Car travesty. What makes it even more sad is the real TV car wasn't even a 27. It was butchered from Norm Grabowski's 24 touring. AMT should have tooled up a new kit with the MMTC stuff as an option. Then we'd at least have a 24 Touring and the XR6. But I was only 4 years old then and they didn't ask me.

AMT M&H Racemaster Dragster Slicks & Parts Pack Tires
Dave Darby replied to Gregg's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Those are my holy grail AMT tires. There is a similar tire in the Revell Orange Crate. The ones in the Rat Roaster and Model A highboy try but fail. -
I love those Molotow markers but they can't replace Baremetal foil for everything. There's no way I would have attempted the side trim with a Molotow marker. Cool build tho. BTW, a little rubbing alcohol will remove any Molotow oopsies if you need a second shot.

'32 Ford Chopped Lakes-style Coupe - TROG Beach Racer No.2
Dave Darby replied to Bernard Kron's topic in Model Cars
Nice! Cool Photoshop work too. -
I can see the red and it is gorgeous.

Chrome reversed wheels and the flathead speed parts work for me.
-
The chassis are basically identical other than the X member. All the suspension components will interchange between the 49 and 50 Ford kits. So yes the straight axle should be a direct interchange. I don't have the Showboat kit anymore but I'm pretty sure the instructions show the installation. As I recall the axle and leaf springs are all one piece.
-
Agreed. Or chrome reversed wheels.

What a gorgeous Faux-vivor. I love it!

Times 2! That is awesome. Very creative with believable weathering. A show winner for sure!
