First time at Resin molding ...
GeeBee replied to GeeBee's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
The lug nuts need trimming off so the hubcaps will fit on, so I wasn't too bothered about them, but that's for the info' -
Although I made these silicone molds ages ago, I neve got round to trying my hand at actually casting anything, over the Christmas holidays I ordered some 2 part polyurethane resin, which come this morning, so as I'm waitng for a new paint spraying respirator to arrive, so I can't really do any airbrushing, my latest projest has been put on hold, so I got my supplies together, and had a go at resin molding .... The resin I got needs to be mixed by weight, luckily I already had a set of digital scales, there available pretty cheaply on eBay, a couple of medicine measures, and another slightly larger measure, to mix the two components in, a few wooden mixing sticks, some Talcum power to line the molds with, better than using silicone or mold release as it doesn't put anything onto the resin, so it's easier when it comes to painting as you haven't got any silicone to scrub off. The items I am casting at the basic BMC Mini 10" roadwheels, the Austin front grill and some hubcaps to go with the wheels, the wheels, which has to tyre cast as part of the wheel was done in a 2 part mold, while the grill and the hubcaps were done using a simple one piece mold, Looks a bit rough at this stage, but most of the flash actually snaps of cleanly and just a bit of sanding needs to be done, The two piece mold as a little different, but again only a little flash to clean off, Once cleaned up A little bit of resin needed to be removed from the holes in the wheels and I cleaned up the centre hole with a 2mm drill Now I have found out I can cast in Resin, I'll be making copies of the wheels in the newer Revell Mini Cooper kit, and probably other things I can ley my hands on to cast in resin ....

Thanks Rich, I knew I had seen sheets of decals somewhere, I've just had a look and nothing seems close, I'm still undesided what body colour I'm going to do it in yet, but the seat pattern looks to be the same on pictures of different colour cars, here's a photo of the seat pattern material

Sadly I don't make my own decals, infact I haven't even got a printer ... just my old Dell laptop, didn't know if there were any generic decals sheets available, I'm sure I've seen some somewhere ... Blue was pretty easy to paint over, I got the body and a few parts in primer today, just need to touch up the edges were I wet sanded through I was cleaning up the engine, and it basically fell apart in my hands, I was dreading the alternator and belts breaking, so I was going to leave them in place, the engine harves were cleaned up and fixed back together ..

I bought this off eBay, the kit was listed as "Brand New & Boxed" .... This is what I got !!! After sending a few emails to the seller, I ended up keeping the kit and got a 75% refund, so in the end the model cost me £5.99, (around $9.75), there was a few parts that were broken, or had come un-glued, two of the wheels had snapped off, and the others snapped when I tried to remove them, but the rest of the model basically fell apart, luckily the body and chassis hadn't had too much paint applied as the body was left as the colour it was molded in (Blue) and the roof panel had been brushed painted in white, which had gone a little on the yellow side, the chassis just had the axles and the exhaust picked out in colour, the interior was left in it's molded in blue. The wheel backs were drilled out using a 2mm drill, I will use some 2mm aluminium to make new axles The parts were put into plastic tubs and sprayed with Fairy Power Spray, the chrome parts were soaked in household bleach, and will redone using Alclad. The windows basically fell out, and was only glued at the base of the front screen, the glue marks will stay, as once there refitted, the old glue will not bee seen, the screen got a wash and a polish using Novus # 2 A few mold lines were removed from the body and the body was block sanded to remove a few sink marks, everything is ready for a couple of coats of plastic primer, I'd like to detail the interior, but as all the detail is molded into the seats, I'd like to find some decal material to match the fabric pattern, if anyone know if these are available, please let me know ...

I think the German plates are a bit of modellers licence from Revell, read them carefully, and you'll see they read Mini 998 .... the U.K plates that Christian mentioned are correct for 1 January 1966 – 31 December 1966, I can't remember the exact date the Mini body was modified, although I do know it was January '66, but a 'D' registation prefix would just be correct for an early non safety door handled Mini.

Bought this off eBay last week, it was listed as brand new & boxed ...... This is what I got ! In the end the seller had bought a collection of models and hadn't opened then before listing them, I got most of the money I paid refunded and got it for £5.99 (Just over $9.50), I'll strip it down and try to make a nice shelf model out of it.
