Cool... I've been lovin' The Cult since the 80's too.. Never forget when I heard "Lil Devil" on MTV for the 1st time around 87. That was my first exposure and I went straight out and bought the cassette tape and wore it out.

Just because I am a newb and you are a great builder I'm going to ask a question that you might think is stupid... Why didn't you decant the white too? And what airbrush(es) do you use?

WIP Hasegawa taqa-Q Toyota 88c Finished 8/27/18
jchrisf replied to jchrisf's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I haven't been bulk painting and assembling parts like I did in the past. I got the instrument cluster painted with Duplicolor Acrylic Enamel flat black last night. I just sprayed it without primer and it came out great so now I will be detailing it. I used my Molotow chrome pens and a gold metallic pen to paint the rotors. I also used the Molotow on the wheels too but didn't like the way it turned out so they went in the Purple Pond. The chrome came off very easily. I also tried the Duplicolor Perfect Match Universal Chrome on a couple of the wheels and it looked nice but not as chromed as the Molotow. The Molotow seems to match the real car's wheels perfectly so I will be putting it on again. I may have to try to paint it on with a small brush instead of the pen. I've never seen anyone mention doing that. Using the pen tip didn't come out as smooth as I would like it. On the decal sheet it looks like they expect you to paint it yellow and black and use the decals for the white but I am hoping to use paint for the white instead of the decals. -

Yes it is! Not as nice as Tamiya but quiet a bit better than the Revell, AMT and MPC kits I have built. -
Thanks Clay.. BTW, I've been enjoying and learning from those articles of yours that I recently bought. Hopefully they'll put out more.

This one looks great too... Looking forward to seeing your Pro Stock and Pro Mod builds.

Yeah man.. I love all Sports Prototype cars and most all road racing cars. The prototypes are probably to coolest looking cars to me. -
Looking good.. can't wait to see more!

I'm trying to slow down a bit and build a better model so I hope doing a WIP might help me accomplish that. This will be my 5th build. I love the look of this car. The body came in ten different pieces that I determined would be best to put together before paint. I hope I am right... but the body looks sexy even now without paint and I'd love to drive around town in a street legal car like this. To me it has a better shape than any exotic... even without the wing. I've also added a few pieces to the chassis and painted it flat black and the driver's area in Aluminum/Silver as the kit calls for. It looks to be a fairly simple build with the kit quality almost as nice as Tamiya's... but not quiet. We'll see how it goes from here. I brushed on Tamiya's liquid surface primer in the bottle on some of the plastic weld areas where I glued the body pieces together. This is going to be a tricky paint job. I'll post pics later of the decal sheet but the yellow and white stripes were on the sheet. I think I might try to paint them instead.. starting with a white base coat on the entire body.

Great job.. Did you use spray cans or decant the paint?

The best video tutorials I have found and they're free

Cool.. thanks Jim -
Nice Pat.. I've never heard of Belkits but they are expensive in the states. Though, sounds like from your description they come with some aftermarket style parts.

Can I use normal car primer on my model?
jchrisf replied to Rubbertoe's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The two times I have used Duplicolor primer it has crazed my plastic. It was my fault probably because I put it on too thick and too fast. The stuff goes on so nice and dries so fast I basically just kept spraying it. Too bad the plastic crazes this way because it is so quick and simple to do. I didn't notice the crazing until I put the color coat on.. looked like deep scratches in the plastic in those areas and I couldn't figure out where they came from. This next time I am going to do it the way Dave Thibodeau does it in his Gravity Colors videos. He says that the paint will craze the plastic if you don't feather it on and build it up... this may be what Art was talking about in his replies in your original thread. I queued it up where he starts painting the primer and the second video on where he explains the crazing (it's all the same video though) I am going to decant the Duplicolor and try this. If it doesn't work then I will move on to Tamiya primer. -
The legend, David Thibodeau put these out a couple of years ago for Gravity Colors. I have found them to be the best video tutorials for a newb like me that I have found yet. I hope other newbish folks can enjoy them if you all haven't seen them yet. They haven't had many views. He shares some of his secrets in these where he takes you through building three different models. Two cars and a motorcycle. Great stuff but I'm sure most folks here already know these things: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGBCxpXXBUfPIxcVMiDiyAg/videos

Bill.. two years later what is working for you now? I read the thread and it didn't seem like you had found a solution. -
That's awesome.. I love it.
-
Great job.. is that just red tape on the wheels and tires?
-
Thanks Dann.. I'll definitely be building another one of these.

Yes you can but go light on the first few coats or it will craze the plastic.
