Scale Finishes Paints & Airbrushing
Jeff Johnston replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Same question I have. Don't get me wrong, you can get good results with a rattle can and many do. Like you said, with all the pre-mix paint out there like Scale finishes and Model Car world, why not airbrush it ? You have so much more control over the coverage. No covering up the details with thick paint. You can do 2 tone paint jobs without fearing bleeding through the masking line. I use Scalefinishes a lot. Super paint... -
All my cars are standard. My wife and Daughters cars are both Auto but my wife also likes to drive my cars once in a while. I made my daughter learn. In fact its time to make her practice again. My son is like me. Stick or nothing... Daughter hated driving the stick so her car us auto. But..she can do it if she had to.

I do. Usually I have one main model and a couple others I'm working on. Often times I'll finish them within a week of each other. -
Detailing vs Disability
Jeff Johnston replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Like Roger, I'd be more than happy to BMF your bodies and send them back to you. A tip; I don't know if this helps, but I cut quite a bit larger piece tan I need (so I can hold it) and try to stick the BMF right on the edge of where I need it, so I don't have to trim much on the outside of the body. So for example if I am doing a windshield, I will cut the straight line on the BMF sheet using a ruler, then stick it exactly where it needs to go do I do not have to trim it. Ten I fold it under inside the interior. So if you can picture this... all of my extra BMF is stuck inside the interior...so rather than trimming it along the fine lines on the outside of the car, you would trim it on the inside. and.... because you can't see that you can have a less than straight line. If you have some wave to the trim line, it gets covered up when you paint the headliner. I was also getting frustrated with BMF'ing because my eye sight isn't what it used to be even 5 years ago. So I find it easier to stick it where it goes on the outside, and trim it in the inside. You still have a little trimming to do on the outside, but not those straight lines. JJ -

and a junk car for the yard... I made the tarps from blue tissue paper painted with white glue.water mix.

This is where it is now. I still feel like I need more junk so I'l be gathering and adding bits for a while I think; don't forget the beer

outside landscaping. Next time I think I'll make the lawn less lush lol. I'll try to junk it up a bit.

Starting to come together inside.

This is siting on the wooden base. I used charcoal pastel chalk to dirt up the outside of the garage. Most of the weathering on this project is from pastel chalk. I also started making boxes and other bits to put around the garage,
-
making progress. The trim is also painted craft paint white. All the wood it balsa except the siding. I like the way the balsa is soft and takes the stain well.
-
I bought basswood siding from Urecht supply and aged the inside, while painting the outside with flat red thinned craft paint. THen I glues it on the framing with wood glue. Candles for weight
-
To age the wood I mixed black and white craft paint to make light gray. Then I thinned it a lot. I wiped the paint on the wood with a sponge, or paper towel or etc. and let it dry. I wanted each piece to look unique. This made the wood look aged. Then I uses variouis shades of black, charcoal and brown pastel chalk to dirty it up some more. .

I started thus just before Christmas. I have been planning this build in my head for years and finally pulled the trigger. I'm quite a ways on so I'll post pics from start to where it is now.

I love it. My only issue with this and all other late model Ferrari's is the lack of a real manual transmission. I want to shift....the old fashioned way. -
Revell Customer Service
Jeff Johnston replied to Rick Schmidt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Very interesting and informative post. Not too long ago had a Revell Mustang kit where I messed up the glass. Totally my fault. I put in a parts request on the web site and in the comments section, I told Revell that I broke the part, and that I'd be willing to pay for a replacement. About a week later I received the part in the mail. NO charge.. This was not Revell's fault, it was mine. They still replaced the part, for free. Similar situation where I bought a paint from a scale finishes. When I got the paint, it wasn't the color I wanted. I sent an email explaining that I either ordered the wrong paint, or was sent the wrong color. Turns out I ordered the wrong color paint. I received an email saying that he had sent me the color I should have ordered, at no charge. Again, this was my fault and the company went over and above any of my expectations to help me. I would have happily bought the bottle once I knew the color name. These are 2 examples of great customer service. Two companies who took care of me even when it wasn't my fault ! Guess what paint I will buy every single time now? Scale Finishes more than earned my business forever, and Revell continues to give great customer service. Moebius makes a wonderful model product. But I'll tell you, if I had missing parts and the model company asked me to go to the post office and mail them the kit. I'd be a little ticked off. Mike and Bill has every right to share their experience with the rest of us here, and I'm glad they did. Its great that they sent Bill a kit. That was the right thing to do. But it took too many steps. If it's missing parts then send the parts that are missing. Don't make it difficult to do business with you if there is an issue. It'd not stop me from buying a Moebius kit because for some subjects, like the 55 and 56 Chrysler, there is only one source. But reading this leave me a little disappointed.
