BMF INFO revive it?
Jeff Johnston replied to booboo60's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've has chrome BMF go bad but not sticky bad. I have had it kind of fall apart and not cut in strips. However for the last 3-4 years since they came out with the new and improved, I've never had an issue. -
Painting Discussion
Jeff Johnston replied to 2002p51's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It definitely depends on the paint. Though typically I never use anywhere near 1 oz. I recently bought a 2 OZ bottle of paint form Scale Finishes (wonderful paint) and I used at least an ounce to get the hue I wanted. I have also similar projects where I used far less. Last night I painted a Ferrari Testors Laquers Gloss Red, thinned about 3/4 lacquer thinner 1/4 paint. I mixed a 1 oz jar almost to the top and sprayed 2 light coats at VERY low pressure, which covered the model nicely. Here is how much paint I have left... So I really do think the paint matters. -
same here. I only have maybe 70 un-built kits..a very small number compared to many of my modeling friends. But I always find myself buying something. Usually something gets stuck in my head and I'm off looking for it on ebay. But then by the time it arrives my head has moved onto starting something else in my stash, and I end up stacking it.

Why do you build models?
Jeff Johnston replied to clovis's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That sums is up for me too. I like cars, and I like to build stuff. -
Interesting comments. I see both sides I guess. Though I agree that if you claim to be a pro builder, with 45+ years of experience, which gives him the right to guarantee your satisfaction (or however put it)... well then he ought to build a better model than that. I mean, has he ever looked at the internet ? When I started building again seriously back in 2001, I only had to visit the internet once to realize my stuff was c r a p. I've learned a lot since then, but I'd never describe one of my builds as professional builds. Having said that, I also agree with Darin's second post. The pictures were clear as day. Whoever bought that model knew exactly what they were getting. Despite the builders inflated opinion of his builds, at least he put clear pics. The buyer made the decision and the dude made about 50 bucks. Right about enough money to buy 2 new kits. If the buyer likes it, who cares if its c r a p. Just my opinion and you know what opinions are like..

I went to Spare Time the first time just before Christmas Charlie. Its a 50 minute ride for me, and worth every minute. I had a nice conversation with the guy working there that day, and ya can't do that on the internet. I do buy a fair amount of stuff on ebay (out of production stuff), but I do enjoy going to the hobby shop. That one there in Marlboro is a good one !

First Mustang ever sold..
Jeff Johnston replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I stand corrected...Just when I thought I knew all Mustang I am proven wrong LOL. Thanks for the correction, I had always thought every 64 V8 was black with gold valve covers. -
Another Mustang off the bench ! This Revell Mustang kit is my all time favorite model kit, period.

First Mustang ever sold..

Nice car and beautiful restoration, but the engine is completely the wrong color... Mustang V8s weren't Ford Engine Blue until 1966. sheesh... -

Long time no see
Jeff Johnston replied to walt francis's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Good to see you Walt. It looks like you;re driving somewhat long distance. I love to drive... hope you are enjoying it. -
I have a dual action Badger 175 and I love it. The 175 is a very different airbrush than the 350,. and reasonably priced. Typically 75 bucks on line.

If I recall, Ismael is still alive and well living in Puerto Rico. Last I read he was not building as much. IT happens. It happened to me for 10 years or so back in the 90s. He'll be back once a project sparks him up again Maybe Art Anderson will know. I think he and Art had regular contact.

new shop (Time to pack)
Jeff Johnston replied to b_lever1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Lighting is key.... Good bright lighting with a couple clip on the desk style bright hobby lights. A nice comfortable chair is a must... I like the L-shaped desks that you can get at Staples, etc. Some of them are large, Multi-tiered, fairly inexpensive and perfect for model building. Lots of shelves and a peg board behind the desk at an arms length. Cable and a TV is a must too. It would be for me. As far as the door lock, I'd not need one either. If you have to lock your wife out of your hobby room there are bigger problems at hand IMHO LOL I sometimes think of the house I would build if I won the lottery. I'd have one heck of a hobby room if I did LOL. Actually I would build a barn garage for my cars with the whole upstairs as my hobby/music area. -
$250,000 for a Mustang knockoff?
Jeff Johnston replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hmm.... LOVE the rear end. I agree the front looks like a Mopar. If I were the designer I;d maybe have made it look like...well maybe an old Mustang LOL Overall I do like it. Bu there are some other retro bodies where the nose looks way more like a Mustang. -
Just near blew the man cave up
Jeff Johnston replied to jaydar's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
same here there is too much risk for it blowing up. I paint in my garage that's attached to the house. In the winter I bring the cans in the basement so they are room temperature. I've never, ever had an issue painting at room temperature/. -
Is our hobby, growing or skrinking?
Jeff Johnston replied to Chris White's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is a great thread. I really have nothing to add except for my observations. I will pay 25 or more bucks for a new model release. I would not have 10 years ago.. I've seen more releases that interest me in the last 5-7 years (since Wal-Mart stopped selling models) than I did in those days. If I'm a logical thinker I'd think that maybe the big box 5 and 10 dollar kit sales did nothing to help the model companies, or the avid car modeler....I'd have never thought that at the time. I buy mo more or no fewer models than I did when Wal Mart or Kay Bee toys (etc) sold kits, thanks to the internet. I'm almost 49 yeas old, and usually in the lower range of the age of guys are at the (2) shows I attend. I definitely feel that its one of the best times to be a model builder. I also think that when I croak (hopefully at an old age. gluing an engine block together with a tube of Testors glue in my hand, If there are no more younger modelers than there will be on car modeling hobby. I also do not feel an obligation to pass the hobby. Though in my heart I'd sure home future generations can enjoy this as much as I have. Out of what? 3000 models on the table at NNL east? How many are younger modelers (kids) ? 30 ? maybe ? 1% ? (not sure the actual number but its not a lot). I was into modeling as a kid, then slowed dramatically in my late 20s to my mid 30s, then back again strong at 35 or so. But I had a base...an existing interest. That base no longer exists. I have many friends that are car fanatics who are not at all interested in building. I don't get that.. One guy still has a ton of models form when he was a kid but no interests in building them (and yes I;ve bugged him to sell them to me but he's keeping them LOL) I still think that the hobby is shrinking in numbers of people into it, though not in the dollars spent. Agree with others that its due to older guys like me willing to spend more;. Again...I have no quantitative data to back it. Like Harry said, this is what these boards are for right ? Now go buy a model. I'm going to. JJ -
One Kit, One Island!
Jeff Johnston replied to Tom Geiger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For me it would be the AMT 67 Mustang. -
How did you get started building models?
Jeff Johnston replied to clovis's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My uncle came to the house with his brand new white 1974 Corvette and a model and we sat at the table and built it. From then on I got a model every payday (they were cheap back then LOL). I slowed through my late teens and early 20s while i was studying, and picked is back up in my mid 20s. From my mid 20s to mid 30s I built but maybe only a few kits a year. I guess except maybe when I was 24 and 25 I built pretty steady then. I moved to Boston in 1991 and had a lot of time spent at work and studying the new procedures, etc I had to know, and at the same time I met a girl...so between work, work travel, and the girl (who I married and we celebrate our 20th anniversary this week) I slowed a lot until about 2001. When I discovered Hobby Heaven on line in about 2002 or so, and that's when I started back heavy, and have never looked back. -
I used to use it. Not anymore. Not worth the health risks. I don't have the best set up for painting. I always use a respirator and have the garage doors open, but I cannot say that's properly ventilated. I do like the results on black. Definitely more durable to polish by far. I get great results using wet look clear decanted and airbrushed on. I thin it down a little with cheap lacquer thinner, and spray at a pretty low pressure, held close to the subject. This really cuts down on the cloud of spray and it lays down very smooth. This is an example of Testors Wet look airbrushed on and polished. This is Urethane 2 part. Can you see a difference ? I can't;...

Nope, aint for sale gonna fix'er up!
Jeff Johnston replied to Gramps2u's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
no wonder they play funeral music n that video. It is really sad... I mean a Ferrari Dino sitting rotting : Seriously ? (I know a Dino not a "Ferrari"....you know what I mean). The longer they sit the harder they are to restore and the less someone will want to. I guess people don't want to part with their past. If i has a 57 Corvette sitting and rotting away that I knew I could never have the $$ to restore I'd sell it and buy something done I could enjoy.. hmm...
