When buying a new car.....
Jeff Johnston replied to uncle potts's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just told a 69 Mustang Fastback and bought a 2006 Mustang GT. The 69 was a classic, the 2006 probably will never be...and I could not care less. having said that I do have a few other carts I wish I'd held onto. -
That is exactly what I do. Once my shelf fills up with built ups I sell a bunch, make a handful of cash so I can buy more stuff. I have maybe a half dozen built kits that I would never part with. However, I do not get emotionally attached to anything I build and I eventually do sell it. I like to build and for a while I like to look at by builts on the shelf. But always there is a time where I sell a bunch like i did recently. I took the money and bought new tires for my Mustang

Would you pay more...
Jeff Johnston replied to gluebomb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nope. Shabo and others sell tire decals that are much better looking than trying to paint the side wall details on a model tire. Well....that's not completely true. I guess I would but what I am saying is that for 6 or 7 bucks you can get enough tire decals or dry transfers to last at least as many models. I buy tire decals from a guy I know from another board. He sells them to be for 10 bucks for a 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of all different kinds of decals. Goodyear Polyglas, BFG T/A's, Wide Oval, Uniroyal.... -
I've built a few kits for pay. People who have reached out to me. I've built WAY more for people for free...models of friends cars etc. I eventually sell a lot of my build ups on ebay to make room for more. I use the money for more model stuff. I don't think that's profiting but I have gotten some ridiculously high prices for a few kits I wondered if they'd even sell...

Builders Block What Do You Do?
Jeff Johnston replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
you wait...eventually something will spark and you'll start to build. I have had it at times over the years and basically I just wait. I build when it strikes me and I don't when it doesn't. Although it does help me if I am not interested in anything to paint a body and get it polished out. That does sometimes make me want to keep going when it has happened. -
the one that got away.....

I have two. One was the 69 Mustang Mach 1 that the guy across the street wanted to sell me for 2300 bucks in 1984. I passed on it and bought a 76 Camaro LT because it had a 4 speed. Stupid kid. Then I grew up and was looking for a Mustang...found a 68 GT. 4-speed 302 4 barrel. Descent driver. The guy wanted 7800 for it. I passed because he would not let me drive it because it wasn't registered. He told me it had a clutch chatter and that at it probably needed a clutch. I passed not knowing what else it might need. It idles and revved fine. That car would be worth a lot more than 7800 now... and this was only in 1999 ! JJ -

What are you an English major or something ? I didn't have any problems reading it. It not like he's applying for a job... lol -
The only ones I like are the Shelby an the VW Bus. The Bus looks like its ready and I bet it would have sold. But what do I know... As far as the Aerovette, that was a 73 and if they had done that car as production, I think that Corvettes in general would be very different cars today. Now depending on who you are, that could be a good or a bad thing. Personally I grew up in the 70s and loved the 70s Corvettes. Don't get me wrong, I'd not pick one over just about any other Vette that came before, but I have a soft spot for those lines even today. I suppose those 10 years older than I may have a different opinion of those 70s Corvettes. But I bet if the Aerocoupe was made, the Corvette of today would be much more Ferrari like (meaning mid engine, more exotic'ish). Just my speculation of course. BUT....if the 84 Corvette did not look like it did, likely today's Vette would be different too... and the modern Vette is one sweet car. That is another car that went from clay to production with almost no change. The 84 Corvette.

Wow I would have never guessed looking at the first pics that this wasn't a 77. What a labor of love...gee don't ya think it may have been easier to have started with a 77 ? Just kidding of course. This is a beautiful car. I wish I still had mine. -
I was probably in my later teems when I started taking it seriously. I never stopped building but I slowed a lot in my early 20's, I got back into it in my mid 20's pretty heavy...then at about 27 (1991 ish) I really slowed to maybe 2 build a year until 2000 when I started again. Then I went to Classic Plastic Model Car show in Mass and saw all the great stuff, and found the message boards. The rest is history

AWESOME car ! In APril 1986 I bought a black 1978 T/A 4 speed and I loved that car ! Its one of the few I wish I had held onto. That's a beautiful car my friend ! Is that a 77 or a 78. I recently Built a model almost like that I left the pin stripes off because mine had the black and gold, but not the honeycomb, and not the pinstrpes or a T-top. Weird thing about my car was was it had Rally wheels with Gold Accents which I have never seen on a car since. Congratulations on fulfilling your dream ! I sold mine to get a 72 Corvette. The 2 cars I wish I still had Now you;ll have to build the Revell kit. It almost just falls together. A little simplified, but a very nice kit. Only you'll have to get the Trans AM decals from Keith Marks -
Just a thought about the U.S.

The truth is compared to other nations, we are fat... Real Fat. Stupid we are not. Fat we absolutely, as a nation, are. -
The 5 best GM designs
Jeff Johnston replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry I was going to say almost the same thing. However I think the 63 and the 68 should be on the list. Both game changers IMHO. The Solstice ? I mean yeah its a cool little car, that's for sure, but one of GM's best designs ? hmm... I liked the Sky a lot better...same girl - different dress. I also think the most recent Caddy STS/CTS is a pretty slick car. I guess with only 5 to choose from its definitely subjective. -
Wal-mart has models again...
Jeff Johnston replied to model-collector's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Right her in town there was a Hobbytown and he always had a great selection of kits. All Brands too... Then they raised is rent in the plaza where thee store was. His along with everyone else's.... So, he bailed and moved his shop about 40 miles north to Manchester, NH. Cheaper rent, and a lot of his RC customers (his bread and butter) came down from there. I make the trip up there every once in a while, but its not convenient. 40 miles isn't that far but it ends up being a few hours which isn't always easy to get. Tough part is that since he moved, probably 5 years ago, that store has sat empty along with most of the other stores in that plaza. -

Wal-mart has models again...
Jeff Johnston replied to model-collector's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
there aren't many hobby shops anymore. There used to be 4 around here even 5 years ago, and now all of them are gone. Though I don't miss the Donks and other ridiculous models that were most certainly made for Wal-Mart. Notice how none of them have been out since Wally stopped carrying kits. The truth is that I think the hobby has given us better kits in the years since WalMart stopped carrying kits, I don't think its a coincidence.
