Shipping? whats to much? and too little?
Jeff Johnston replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wal-Mart sells boxed perfect for models for about 60 cents each. You can ship a model USPS Priority for a bout 6 bucks. So $7.00 is what I charge when I sell a model...more if they want delivery confirmation, etc. Flat rate box that will hold a model starts at like $11.45. Its cheaper to just buy the boxes at Wal-Mart and ship them 1st class or priority. I'd never ever pay $16.00 for shipping of a model. Unless of course the model plus shipping is still a good deal for the particular model I wanted to buy, or if it was a can't find it anywhere but I gotta have it kind of kit. -
Thank you Harry I could not agree more. Also I agree with Dave Van in that I am not sure how much "fun" it would be to run a model company. If I ran Revell or Round2 would I run out and tool up a brand spanky new 67 Galaxie ? Dunno...being that a company has to make money that would be the deciding factor. I'd also be branching out into other areas because model cars, or model anything is an adult hobby. What does a 16 year old kid want to buy ? Plastic phone covers and RC bodies that fit onto the more popular RC cars and ###### like that...then maybe if I am making the buck on that side I can throw the modelers a break even bone once in a while...like that 67 Galaxie But what Harry says I agree. Especially the chrome tabs.

I don't buy a lot of kits. If I run across a cheap 5 buck kit I'll buy it so I can trade it... Most of my budget goes to paint and modeling supplies. I have 50 unbuilt kits and would not have to buy one for 10 years if I built them all. I end up buying maybe 4 kits a year and it has to be something I really want. It didn't used to be that way, but now that kits about 25 bucks a pop, its how it is now. JJ

As am I ... well the technically Merrimack Valley... -
Excellent work ! I love this build.

that's a nice model of a car you almost never see built. My friend back in 82 had a Monza with a 305 and it would run neck in neck with my 76 Camaro 350.

I swear I had to look at this car twice and I am still not convinced its a model ! Awesome !

NNL East. Just eight weeks to go.
Jeff Johnston replied to Modlguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My room is booked and look forward to seeing everyone in the lobby of the Ramada on Friday afternoon. -
I look forward to NNL east every year. I get so excited that I have had dreams that I went to NNL east the wrong weekend, or that I spend to much time in the vendor area I missed all the models... and no I am not joking LOL

I Can't Paint For Nothin'
Jeff Johnston replied to Old Sprinter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yup me too, exactly the same. My opinion is if you use the Tamiya tape it will work best. I have never had issues with it and it leaves a very straight line. Another trick is to put a coat of clear down over the tape prior to painting the second color. This will seal it and prevent any color leaking under the tape. Spray very light mist coats or the paint will just make the tape wet and it'll seep through. -
I tend to favor Spotlight Hobby (modelcarkits.com). Reasonable prices and fast shipping. I tend to buy old weird stuff though and find myself buying most of my stuff on eBay.

I still love my Badger 175. I swear by it. -
Very nice..those Enthusiast kits are challenging and you make it look perfect. I also think its time for me to start my 288 GTO soon. Plus that Dino makes me want to build another one of those. The Dino can give you fits too LOL I did me...

I LOVE that !

A Feast of Snakes (Two Cobras Are Deadlier than One!)
Jeff Johnston replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Model Cars
Very nice I love the color...not your average Guardsman blue with white strips. Very cool. -
This is one that I envision the owner drives regularly and keeps clean...but underneath is dirt and grime any car gets from regular use. Same in the engine bay. The white is Wimbledon white (Duplicolor right out of the can), with a chevy color called Autumn gold on the roof (gasp lol) airbrushed on, and then cleared with some decanted and slightly more thinned Testors Wet Look Clear. This year my modeling resolution was not to just build muscle car after muscle car. Plus i want to add some more realism which I hope I captured by dirtying up the frame and engine a bit. Though they never used basecoat-clearcoat in 53 so I'll pretend its been repainted LOL

dupicolor
Jeff Johnston replied to modelbuilder22's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
one more tip. Duplicolor metallic paints are HOT HOT HOT. You will craze the model very easily if you aren't careful. Even with Duplicolor primer. You have to mist the paint on in light coats, or else you'll craze it. Go slow and eventually you'll get he whole thing covered. I've made this mistake too many times. Jeff
